Gladly!

"It was a group of Orcus-worshippers that caused the damage, a short-sighted lot to be sure. Under the city we found a magic circle, a breached planar barrier, and a qlippoth. The cult had decided to open a portal to one of the outer planes; whether the one they found was the one they sought is anyone's guess. A qlippoth came through the portal, and promptly slaughtered them; you'll find various body parts of theirs down below. It was the shockwave from this breach that caused the damage to your buildings up here. Not to worry about the creature, though, we've sent it back where it belongs.

"Now before we leave, I'd be very interested in learning more about your reanimation techniques, if you have the time..."

GM, since there's a surprising dearth of specifics regarding the Command Undead feat, and I get the feeling it might come up, I wanted to ask your opinion on how it works.

1. What's the duration? It says targets that fail are controlled "as if under the effects of control undead," (which is minutes per level) but it also says that intelligent undead get a new save per day. Personally I would think mindless undead have a duration of permanent.

2. When there are multiple undead in the area, who gets affected? I would assume they all roll their saves regardless of HD, but what then? For example, let's say there are three undeads around me with 5, 4, and 3 HD respectively, and they all fail their saves. My HD limit is 8. Do I get to choose which to control and which to release? Personally, I would use the same rules as sleep or circle of death-- least HD are affected first, and any partials are wasted, so in that case I'd get the 3 and 4 but not the 5.

Fascinating! Evariel walks the street feeling completely at ease-- not despite the shambling corpses, but because of them. He inhales deeply. The faint tinge of rot in the air, cleverly masked by flowers and incense, takes him back to his years of dissections and practice with forbidden magic. It's common knowledge that those who devote themselves to the necromantic arts have a proclivity toward cruelty and evil, but Evariel well knows that isn't always true. "The undead are potent tools, nothing more. Handle with care and they can be quite useful."

* * * * *

"Forgive me," the elf says to Horus when he catches himself staring at the man's servant. "I've practiced these arts for years, and have never seen them displayed so openly. I'm fascinated by your district. Is there anywhere I might purchase one of those myself? And more to the point, can you tell us where this damage seems to be?"

Earlier:
Evariel looks over his new companion. He smells like a spice cupboard. I'm guessing it's to cover up something... less pleasant. "You're a dhampir, aren't you? You should know I specialize in-- well, your kind." He decides he might as well put it out there early, given where they're heading. "I'm a necromancer. So if we're to be traveling together, well, I thought you might like to know."

To be honest, though, it was hard to concentrate on anything else as he made his way to the Emerald Heirloom to meet the others. An entire city of necromancers! Why have I never heard of this Ankar-Te district of Kaer Maga before? Even if it's a predominantly-human city, he's surprised his mentor never mentioned it during his tutelage. Seems like the kind of thing I ought to have been told about. Perhaps the only place in the world where, if I brought a companion into town, nobody would even think twice.

Now:
The elf looks the others over. "My name's Evariel. I've no doubt as to why I was asked to this mission; I specialize in necromancy."

So yea, I think VTPBP is right-- any of us can scribe one of those spells into our respective spellbooks, but since it isn't on our spell lists we can't cast it. In fact, even other Magaambyan arcanists can't cast it because it hasn't been added to their spell list (unless they chose it themselves, in which case they'd have it already anyway). It would just be for the lulz.

Ah. Well technically, it too is a negative energy effect. But I would definitely lean toward "no it won't work." Unfortunately there are a lot of aspects of necromancy that have never been clarified, a fact I only realized after building around it! I hope it gets more fleshed out in 2e.

Also, this really is a diverse group! Only six of the eleven are wizards, and (with the possible exception of Albert Cam's wizard), no two of us took the same specialty school.
