We’ve mentioned it before, but in case you’ve forgotten, the Pathfinder Chronicler fanfiction contest is in full swing! There’s still plenty of time to enter, however, and the winner will still receive the grand prize of a $100 Paizo store gift certificate and publication in Wayfinder, with two runners-up receiving $50 Paizo gift certificates. You've got until September 12th to get your entry in, so why not use that 3-day weekend over Labor Day to whip up a story and send it in? Contest details can be found here.
Why do I bring this up now? Well, in addition to offering a reminder while there's still time to get your submission in, the Pathfinder Chronicler folks were kind enough to interview me recently about judging the contest, writing advice, and all things Pathfinder fiction, so if you're feeling almost up to it but could use a little extra encouragement, hopefully some of my ramblings can be of use.
Pathfinder Chronicler had recently interviewed James Sutter about this contest.
One of PFC's questions was:
It is known among the community that when writing Paizo Pathfinder fiction, it is “verboten” to use world shattering cataclysmic themes in those stories. Of course, this is fan fiction and anything is possible. Would you judge such a piece more harshly?
James Sutter responded:
Nah. Half the fun of fan fiction, as opposed to canon, is that you can do whatever you want to the characters without anyone saying otherwise. If I’m not paying for a piece, who am I to say that Asmodeus doesn’t come down to earth, hook up with Durvin Gest, and then turn Jalmeray into a giant spaceship so that he can travel to a universe where Firefly never got canceled?
I wan to write a short story entitled 'Verboten' and incorporate all of James' ideas.
well if one thing can be said about all of this. James's advice is pretty cool however you put it :D
I myself i am reading "Before they were giants" and it indeed had given me some ideas for a science-fantasy story for a VERY DIFFERENT contest, it has even given me the chance to give a couple well deserved homages :D
I think they said that too...., which would imply that the runnerups wouldnt have to post it there....
its not entirely necessary, not in the case of the contest.
anyone else? yes.
but its because we don't published anything that its not at least a little bit worked in the Chronicler... every text is benefited by a second or fourth pair of eyes on it.
I'm entering the contest! I just need another pair of eyes to look it over, then to do a final edit and submit! (Yay! Only 5 days until the deadline!) I can't wait to read the winning stories once it's all over!
