"That could be true, but she seemed...afraid? to see us at dinner tonight. It doesn't make sense...if she's able to conjure food like they say she can, then why lie about being a priestess in the first place? To maintain hope for everyone else? Would they not accept her if she didn't pose as a priestess?"

Hmm. I think if she were of that master of lies, Asmodeus, I would soon pick up on it. I have been around those who worship and deal with devils most of my life. No I think it more likely that she is a charlatan or that her powers come from some elemental or arcane source than a divine.

There are a few of us gifted a last breath of power before they were call cut off." He looks down at his holy symbol. "The lady of graves gave me these powers for a reason. To know the gods are still around us gives people hope, maybe that is all she wishes to give these people hope? Maybe we're all right."

Polonius has a thousand and one things running through his head that night. But with the chance to sleep in a real bed since... he didn't even know when, sleep took him within moments of his eyes closing.

The next morning he rises with the sounds of the community busying themselves with the morning jobs and washes quickly before dressing and gearing himself to head to the junkyard.

Valex prepares for bed, feeling secure. Well...almost secure. He had rolled himself into his bedroll, but after a few minutes of internal debate, gets up and makes his way to the doorway of their room, casting a silent alarm on the doorway. He leaves his sheathed dagger under the cloak that he's rolled up as a pillow, and stretches out to sleep. TO any of his comrades that observe him, he offers a crooked half-smile and a sheepish shrug, then turns to the wall and waits for sleep.

The next morning breaks, the inhabitants of Solace rise with the dawn and there is subdued conversation at breakfast, which consists of gruel attempting to imitate porridge and failing its disguise check. Those you spoke to last night wave in greeting, but everyone seems keen to get on with their jobs for the day. Nikolai makes an entrance looking much healthier than you last saw him and smiling at you from across the hall. After the meal he comes over, Whisper trailing in his wake like a kite.

I trust you slept well, I apologise for the lack of furniture, we've yet to have the fortune of a carpenter arriving. Still there's always hope! he seems to be full of positive energy today.

So I hope you have had a chance to talk to some of the other residents, perhaps they've explained a little about what we do during the day?

he looks around expectently, but noticing the blank expression of Shayliss, waves a hand dismissively

No matter! We have several jobs people gather in groups to do. We feel staying together is safer than individuals doing their own thing. It would only take one accident to turn someone, and if they were working alone then that creates a danger no-one would know about, we lost a few people in the early days. One man fell and bashed his head whilst trying to repair the tower. A boy was carrying supplies up to the roof and was set upon with no warning... he trails off

But I'm sure I don't need to tell you how to be safe! So, let me tell you the groups we have assigned today, and you can see where you'd like to add your efforts.

A brief crunchy aside whilst your characters listen to the fluff Nikolai is speaking!

So, each day you can pick a group to team up with. Each job has associated checks to make to see if you're successful

Farming
Profession (farmer) or CON check DC 10 to avoid fatigue

Logging
Profession (woodsman) or Survival or CON check DC 15 to avoid fatigue

Construction
Profession (builder) or CON check DC 15 to avoid fatigue

Lookout
Perception check DC 15 (more a test of being able to remain vigilant over a long period)

Guard duty and training
STR or DEX check DC 15 to avoid fatigue

Housekeeping
Profession (servant) or WIS check DC 15 to repair, sew, clean, tidy and do the 101 things needed to keep the place homely

On any of the above activities you may also make a Diplomacy or CHA check to represent talking to your workmates to learn some gossip or make friends.

Notes:
Feel free to suggest alternatives to the profession and craft skills above if you feel they would be appropriate
The fatigued condition is only present for any night time activities you choose to undertake as a good night's sleep cures it.

As well as the resultant effect of the time you spend working (for instance bringing in more wood than usual so the stockpile improves, training the men to be good fighters so they stand more of a chance in battle, etc), each action you take (and its success or failure) will effect both the morale of Solace and how the people there feel about your group.

The above actions are visible and helpful to the community, this does not of course mean they are all you can do...

You may also:
explore the surrounding area: make a survival check
explore the keep: advise where you are looking to explore and make a stealth check to remain undetected

Both these actions take you away from the attention of the Solace populace however, they won't demand you account for yourselves, but they will wonder why you chose not to 'chip in' on that day.

Feel free to suggest other things you might want to do :)

Interlude over!

Nikolai waits to see what you decide to do today.

Go ahead and make your choices and associated rolls. Travel to the junkyard to return the catatonic man is understood to be necessary so won't be judged as 'disappearing off' today. If you're going to do that though please make a survival check to follow those tracks

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Polonius was going to return the catatonic man but I wasn't sure who was going to accompany him. I'll delay my actual post until I know.

Aside from this, lookout seems best suited to Polo, thoigh ultimately crafting is how he would best contribute

Lilith planned to do general repairs and cleaning this first day using Mending and Prestidigitation. She will set up a station with a small table outside accessible to all and advertise her services to all comers at breakfast. She is not interested in cleaning easy to clean items or persons but Prestidigitation could be used to clean up anyone sick, items that are hard to move like a tapestry on a wall, etc. She can also use the spell to add flavor/spice to meal. She will do her best to help everyone but give priority to tools and weapons. She will take breaks where she will pass through all the buildings using Prestidigitation to clean anything that really needs a cleaning. This should give her a reason to walk around inspecting the place too.

Perception to notice both problems and anything out of the ordinary: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27

I figure in a 10 hour work day she should be able to repair maybe 50 items plus do some needed cleaning. This will be very visible and should both help morale and impress the people with her desire to be of great help.

She is very interested in what the community thinks are its top priorities and will ask its leaders at breakfast. She also hopes to use her expertise to come up with her own short list. Her priorities are survival oriented initially - defense, sanitation, shelter, food stores, clean water, etc. So let me know what she thinks are big concerns. To assess this she will use her Breadth of Experience (+2 to all craft and profession checks) and her knowledge skills (+10 or better in all).

If there are wounded she can memorize Infernal Healing, but would prefer others in the party to handle healing as she well knows the negative stigma that can accompany that spell. I believe Lenneth can use a healing hex on every resident if she chose to do so.

Euron rises and heads for breakfast, nodding at those who wave that he spoke to last night eating down his breakfast while not hes not sure what it was it still fills his stomach. In the light of day he can make out what most of the people look like and for a split second he was sure he recognised someone. He instinctively ducts to cover his face, and slowly looks over to the group of women. That was Ellie, she looks just like her..

He's taken back to the night of the red harvest where he saw his love bathed in the chaos and blood as she helped bring in the end of the world with the rest of the whispering way. It cant be her, she would see this place burnt to the ground.. He shakes all thought of her out of his hand that was a life time again it was a memory best forgotten.

--

Heading back to their room he prepares himself for the day donning his armor and taking up his weapons. "After breakfast we head straight out deal with the man and follow those tracks. It's me and Polo so far anyone else?"

He loads the sick man on to the sling they made for him and begins to drag him back to the post where they found him. While they are traveling Euron speaks up. "Polo, i know you don't trust Laylu. But she has proven a reason to trust her for now, we need to look at these new people in the keep. I don't know if my feelings are rational but.. its all to easy."

Looks like i'll be Logging or lookout but today i will be out tracking - Again i will delay my roll tell we get to the post where we found the tracks.

At the Castle....

I'm heading back out today. I agreed I'd give that man we found a decent wnd and I will. I also want to see if there is anything to the tracks we found there but please, if any of you speak to the locals, ask them about a red-haired gnome named Benvolio. Or any Gnomes for that matter. It would mean a lot to me. he adds.

At the archway....

I'm sorry Euron, I couldn't disagree with you more. Polo shakes his head. She told us she took on Shayliss because she didn't want to be alone. Couldn't it just have easily been that she knew a pregnant woman would garner the trust of moat groups that came by?

She also knows people in that keep, a fact I find damned convenient to tell the truth. Since all this started, have you met anyone you knew? And yet we travel days across goblin infested mountains and she bumps into a couple of old friends. Maybe there's truth in what she says and she knew them from ranging this area, but why keep her meeting with them secret? I for one want to keep a close eye on her and the others in this community.

Once back at the junk heap, Polonius gently helps the man into a kneeling position. Then, as he did so with Kaiyas brother a thousand years ago, slides his blade into the base of the man's skull. He goes with a small sound and Polonius has time to remark on how easy the act has bexome. A thought that sickens him a little.

Shaking his head, he turns back to Euron. I don't know this man's beliefs, and I was never one for faith beyond the odd prayer to Desna, but do you want to say something?

After what has to have been the most restful sleep she's had since Sandpoint, Lenneth rises to greet the new day in a surprisingly cheerful mood despite all that was discussed the previous night.

After breakfast and a (regrettably) quick bath, she gathers her things and hurries to catch up with Polonius and Euron as they prepare to return to the junkyard. When Lilith offers her the wand, she pockets it gratefully. "Thanks Lilith. I hope I won't see need to use it today, either! We shouldn't be out there too long..."

Glad to have you with us, Lenneth. Polonius says as the witch catches up. I think Euron was about to say a few words for this man. It doesn't seem right to leave him here. I think we should bury him. I'd suggest burning as it's more sanitary but I'd be wary the smoke would bring unwanted attention.

Whilst Valex's caution is surely a good survival trait, no-one crosses the boundary of your room in the night, and you all enjoy a good night's sleep.

Nikolai nods as you each make your choices.

Very good, I'm glad you want to contribute he smiles, nodding in farewell and turning to walk back in to the keep. Whisper a half step behind.

Tali elected to join the guards in training and do a stint on watch. Polonius notices the two men she met with last night are among the five holding spears and crossbows ready to serve.

***
Lilith

Lilith sets up her station and demonstrates her magical abilities to mend and clean small items. Very soon there is a line of half a dozen people queuing up to watch the mage work her magic on the simple things the community relies on to survive. Several gape in awe as the cracked bowls and mugs they bring are restored before their eyes, a couple of the folk tasked with laundry duty try their hand and look a little dejected when Lilith points out she cannot do everything including the easy things or she'd be overwhelmed every day. They shrug it off looking embarassed as a couple of others jibe them about trying to shirk their work.

Shayliss had volunteered to do some housekeeping, though she is quickly shushed and told to sit down as they bring another chair out to Lilith's table. Shayliss is provided with an embroidery hoop and told she needs to make something to brighten the place up. It's make work but she seems glad of the company and a chance to be part of things even if she can't contribute fully in her condition.

On her walk around the keep, through both mentally mapping the place and asking around as to where things are, Lilith becomes familiar with the area.

>>> MAP OF SOLACE <<<

Most living areas are reasonably clean, but there are plenty of old and smelly blankets and tapestries hung on the walls for warmth that Lilith has no trouble using them as an excuse to be in nearly every room. The Chapel, Councillor's chamber and one downstairs storeroom have locked doors which prevent her seeing in to those rooms. The door to the turret room is also locked but Lilith gains access via the outside steps, though aside from a mostly wrecked staircase there is nothing to see as the tower is open to the elements and nothing is stored up there. Mallis waves and looks rather surprised Lilith has made her way to the lower floor of the turret, he almost doesn't know what to do with himself. He tentatively invites Lilith to climb up to join him, but almost seems relieved when she advises she's just looking for things to clean and repair.

Lilith notes from her observations that no-one appears sick at the moment, everyone is up and around doing a job, even the children are mucking in carrying things from place to place. No-one Lilith speaks to has met anyone named 'Benvolio', though several note there was a gnome here a couple of months ago calling himself 'Ty'. He was a part of the same missing group that Jandra was, sent to scavenge a nearby village but the group never returned. There is some dissent as to the colour of the gnome's hair, the auburn-haired scarf-wearing woman arguing with Brae that it was brown, and Brae insisting that it was red, and only appeared brown because the woman has poor eyesight...the woman storms off.

Uncomfortable as it is, sometimes you just have to put the truth out there, no matter the costs sighs Brae.

Still, it's not like I particular enjoy Della's company anyways!

Polonius, Euron & Lenneth
Ellie, no...it can't be Ellie, notices Euron staring at her and shyly smiles before turning away to her friends and clearing up the breakfast plates.

The journey back to the junkyard is uneventful, and the area remains the same as last you saw, was it only yesterday? The man continues his tuneless humming, right up to the moment Polo's blade slides in. Then there is silence.

Thankfully it didn't rain last night and the tracks leading away to the east are still present.

Go ahead and make your survival rolls. Yup your successful aid another actions (for those present in the church to each other only!) add 3 instead of 2 :)

Azmerai
The others seem a little cautious when the hulking half-orc joins them, though Tali smiles. The day consists of 4 hour watches followed by 4 hours of training, hitting barrels with spears and firing crossbow bolts at a large pile of cloth to avoid breaking them. Radek leads the group and whilst he isn't very polished, seems to be reasonable at instructing the group in technique. At the changeover time, Tali whispers to Azmerai

Keep a lookout if you will, just whistle if you see anyone coming she moves off to the side where two other men are waiting and glancing around. They engage in hushed conversation for a couple of minutes before splitting up and moving off.

--

Euron watches as Polo takes the mans life, there was no point fighting over who did it. He nods as Polo lays the man down. "I.. I don't really know any prays, these powers just came to me. Although i have something my mother used to say." He steps over to the man. "May Pharasma gaze on you and deem you worthy." He then starts to dig a hole for the man.

Finishing up he waves at Lenneth. "It is done, i hope he finds a better place. So let's find out where these tracks lead." He dusts off the dirt and picks up his weapon.

Team Junkyard
Euron is easily able to follow the tracks away from the rubbish-strewn forest clearing. The trail threads its way through the edge of the forest moving eastwards, and it becomes clear that for the most part, taking this path allows you to just about keep Solace in sight for a good portion of the walk. After two hours of trekking and following muddied bootprints and broken sticks, around lunchtime the trail intersects with what passes for a road and the trail vanishes. Polo points out the trail is most likely to continue east and notes the grass that is trying to reclaim the road is less disturbed to the west, so onwards to the east you travel. Two hours later Lenneth halts the group, hearing an odd noise. Fifty yards or so away from the road you find evidence of a camp and the remnants of battle.

An old man with a scraggly white beard lies amidst a scene of carnage, hand thrown out towards the road as if beseeching for aid. He has suffered multiple wounds including a blow to the head and is unmoving.

heal check DC 18:
The man has several bite marks but the killing blow appears to have been a hatchet or other large blade delivered whilst the man was still alive. It is impossible to determine whether the bites or the axe blow came first.

Several feet away a large, ripped sack lies discarded on top of a scarred wooden sled that has seen better days. Several of the original supports and boards have been replaced with what seems to be crudely carved antlers bound with leathery uncured sinew. The sled looks to have been designed to be drawn by a team of animals, but the jury-rigged harness currently attached to it appears sized for a medium humanoid. The sled is listing badly to one side and the entire chassis and runners are twisted and unuseable. Several zombies lie scattered around and half melted.

craft (alchemy) or spellcraft DC 18:
A fairly powerful acid has been used here, destroying both undead and the sled. Either a very powerful alchemical concoction or a powerful spell

Given the state of the churned up ground, it is impossible to say whether the zombies or the other group attacked the hermit first.

There does not appear to be anything of value here, the area looks to have been picked over already by whoever destroyed the zombies. Euron lifts his foot and spots a small silver bell embedded in the mud. It looks to have been part of the harness but now lies crushed and tarnished.

At this stage, given how far you have traveled, you can either elect to return to Solace and be back just before nightfall and in time for dinner or else keep following the trail...

Team Solace

Valex, craft(clothing) is probably the most appropriate skill going!

As Lilith is busy repairing clothes with ruthless efficiency, Valex is tasked with reinforcing some old clothing with scraps of fabric to form a rudimentary set of cold-weather gear. They won't have the warmth of the party's wolf-fur cloaks, but they should make things a little more comfortable for the community. Valex creates quite a stir by sitting with the majority of the womenfolk, and two women in particular seem to take every opportunity they can to ask Valex questions about his travels, his stitching skills and anything else they can think of to spend more time with him. They introduce themselves as Tabitha (dark-hair pinned up in a southern style, well-spoken, most interested in fabrics and techniques) and Ashleigh (long honey-blonde hair trying to escape from the faded ribbon its bound by, down to earth, most interested in the practicalities of how Valex and his party have survived).

As Lilith announces she'll be taking a tour around the keep to inspect and clean the wall coverings, Valex uses the opportunity to excuse himself and accompany her, earning Lilith a pair of scowls from the retreating figures of Tabitha and Ashleigh.

The tour is as per the earlier post detailing Lilith's findings.

The areas of the keep with rubble in really do look to be very dangerous. The major issue faced by any attempt to repair the areas would be potentially damaging the structure more. In addition the stone is very heavy, without magic or specially designed devices, it would be very slow going and hard work to rebuild by hand. This is likely the reason the community has simply placed the areas out of bounds, they have other more pressing needs and the existing areas are currently ample for their requirements.

Lilith is pleased to have Valex's company on her walk through of the area. She notes Why would they lock the chapel? Shouldn't that be a place of sanctuary and rest for all here? If she can see into the Chapel or the store room through a crack or key whole she will "pop" in and have a look if she thinks said room unoccupied.

Polonius edges forward at the sight of the old man. He whispers to the others;

I'm going to take a look. Keep an eye out for any Walkers.

Upon reaching the scene the telltale signs of battle are clear to see.

Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Craft alchemy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Bites and wounds.... Polonius muses over the old man. Though I cannot tell which killed him nor whether these bites are zombie or animal.

But this is more interesting to me. See how these creatures haven't been burned, but melted? This is an acid at work, not a flame, and a strong one too. I used a compound in the lab once called fluroantimonic acid and short of magic it was the strongest acid I have ever come across, burnt right through the lab table in a matter of moments. Someone here has a good mastery of either the alchemical or magical arts.

One other thing, the harness that is attached to this sled. It looks made more for human than animal which could mean either someone was dragging it themselves or else had made use of the dead to drag it for them. Either way, I don't think the answers we want are here, merely a hint at them. Lenneth, remind me to take a look at the portcullis and walls of Solace with yourself and Lillith. I'd like to see if any of that damage were caused by acid too.

Well, what do you think? If we head back now we could return before nightfall. I'd like to press on but the others would be expecting us back. Tomorrow I may return with overnight gear and see where this leads.

He starts to pick through the camp, spotting a small silver bell he pick it up and clean it off to get a better look. "This seems to have been part of the harnesses." He shows Polo and Lenneth. "What do you make of it?"

"I'd like to get to the end of this.. but considering the others are back at Solace we might be safer heading back and letting them know what we found. I got the distinct feeling we were meant to start work tomorrow i hope they understand."

She straightens up, a grim look on her face. "Looks as though someone put an end to him with some sort of large blade, but there's no way to tell whether the bites happened before or after that." As Polo shares his findings concerning the state of the bodies and sled, she nods in agreement. "Or mastery of both. I'd rather not tangle with whoever did this if we can help it, so we should be careful while we're out here."

Looking at the position of the sun, she shakes her head at the prospect of continuing onward. "Not a good idea, especially with just the three of us. Depending on what we want to report to the others, as well as the Council, maybe we can come back this way with a larger group. For now, we'd best be heading back."

You're right. Polonius agrees. He takes one last look around the scene, trying to see everything, even the details that escape his immediate attention but might rear themselves in a moment of lucidity at a later date. With the mental image drawn, he gathers his things.

Let's get back, I hope the others found out more than us.

On the way back, Polo's mind turns back to that thing which has been nagging at him for days - the Drow. He thinks about Amelia and her sickness, the hours he used to spend worrying and working, travelling and studying just to find any way to treat her, And all the while Benvolio grew slowly to resent him for missing those last precious years. He could never put in to words the frustration he felt at knowing he was obsessive, being able to diagnose compulsive behaviour in others and yet not be able to do a damned thing about it himself.

He would force thoughts of the dark elf to the back of his mind only to find in a mile that he had been chewing over every word he had overheard in that room last night. He curses loudly enough for the others to look up.

I'm sorry. Something's on my mind and you won't be surprised to know it is Tali. Shayliss told me she saw him murder a man on the road. He offered to help them but when he turned his back she put an arrow in it. Look, I know I'm the only one who doesn't trust her. And I know that probably says more about me than anything else. But I just want us to be safe for once. I want to go to sleep without a knife in my hand. he sighs. I just wanted you both to know that I'm grateful for everything you've done to help this group. You're my friends and we wouldn't be here without you. I hope we can feel safe again someday soon. All of us.

That was really nice to see on Christmas Day, Polo! *warm fuzzies*

"Actually, I never said that I trust her," Lenneth points out. "Just that I...understand the necessity of doing what you feel you need to do to survive. I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, for now. But if she should betray us in some manner, I'll kill her myself." After a long moment of silence, she continues, her tone softer. "Even if the groaners or looters never get us, constantly living in fear...our minds and bodies aren't meant to handle that sort of pressure in the long run. But even though it's been a hellish trip to get to where we are, I've felt...safer with you two and the others; the safest since the world went to hell. And aside from Indigo, you're all I have. So I suppose I'm with you all to the end, whatever it might be."

"You know my views, i've been very clear on them trust doesn't mean i draw a blind eye to them. Your distrust comes from the idea that people can't change? While i understand why its so hard for you to trust her, it was clear why she traveled with Shayliss so we would feel more inclined to help. I don't think any of us would have given up on that chance to survive, this man that she killed we don't know the full story behind that." He stops for a moment making sure the path they follow is right, as it starts to get dark he doesn't want to get lost.

"But i can't and won't just cast someone out for something they might have done or might never do. Anyone of us might turn on the group, i hope that never happens but as you said i don't want to live my life expecting the next person we meet will be stabbing us in the back. Let's live for now and not what might happen in a week, life is so short now lets make sure this solace is all it's cracked up to be." He smiles at Lenneth. "We have eachother, i won't let anything happen to us no matter what."

Lilith
Lilith is able to get a look through the chapel's keyhole, she can see at the far end of the room, Violet is sat down at a desk, copying out a scroll. Lilith is also able to 'port inside the locked store room. It contains a few shelves with chests and sacks on them. One sack contains coins, another small chest has some jewellery in it, there are some daggers on one shelf and swords on another none are magical.

Team 'returning to base'
Leaving the scene of carnage, the old man's eyes seem to follow you as you walk away. His faded crimson clothes, fur-trim now a muddied yellow-brown, leaves your view as you make your way back to Solace.

Though the area is unfamiliar, you make it back to the keep just as night is falling. Radek greets you

Glad to see you, thought something might have gone amiss with you away so long he looks genuinely relieved.

Come, dinner's nearly ready

Violet performs the same ritual and benediction as last night, and the same four platters of food are carried down to be distributed amongst the tables. Bread, honey, apples and oranges. Tonight there is a watery vegetable soup to accompany the meal.

After everyone has eaten, Nikolai approaches you

I trust you did not run in to any problems running your errand today?

his eyes flick between Euron, Polo and Lenneth

You didn't find anything amiss?

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Polonius greets the others as they return and takes his seat with them at the meal.

He thinks about whether to tell Nikolai what they found or not as he chews on a piece of bread but in the end feels he would gain nothing through duplicity.

There were tracks leading away from the junkyard that we decided to follow. They ended in the scene of a fight where we found the body of an old man. There was evidence of magic, Groaners and weapons. It was difficult to make too much of it because we wanted to get back before dark. Does any of that mean anything to you?

In truth, I'd like to follow up on it but I'm conscious in the two days I've been here I am yet to contribute anything to Solace.

Nikolai nods as Polonius informs him of the group's findings, he seems relieved and his voice seems friendlier now.

I fear that such scenes are all too common where folk can't find shelter

he seems to consider something, then adds

I believe that you are contributing to Solace, if you are able to investigate this more and find a potential threat to the settlement, then that is worthwhile. You have my blessing to continue looking for now

he stands up and you can hear his bones creak

It's very late for this old man, I look forward to speaking with you when you return

He leaves to walk upstairs and you realise Whisper is not with him, in fact she wasn't at dinner either.

Everyone seems to stick to their routines, the two men play their game, the dishes are cleaned and tables washed. Brae is now accompanied with her needlework by Ashleigh and Tabitha who are perhaps hoping Valex will join them.

Tali has been quiet throughout the meal and now rises, glancing at Polo then walking to the guest room.

Getting back to the castle, Euron still can't shake the strange feeling of seeing guards on the wall and hearing people inside talking he had gotten used to the drowning grone of undead.

--

Euron agrees with Polonius when asked of what they found today, nodding as Nikolai takes his leave. "It seems we have his blessing to continue.. We should speak to the others and let them know, I would like us all to head out tomorrow if we are to continue on the trail."

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Polonius disagrees.

I'm glad he wants us to follow up on this. In truth I probably would have any way but I don't think all of us need to go. Euron, you are skilled at tracking and I can move unseen so I should wish. Lenneth can bolster us with magic and I think the others gave done an excellent job here in Solace itself and can build on that. If we find anything, we can always break off and head back. Azmerai, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like you to work with some of the guards. Train them and spar with them. I think men are more vocal when competitive and their blood is flowing. We need to know exactly whether we can trust these people or not.

"If you think that would be best," Lenneth murmurs quietly. "Normally I'd agree with Euron that we should all go, but I'm afraid that Nikolai's permission won't count for much if it starts looking like none of us are contributing at all. It sounds like Lilith, Valex and Azmerai all made themselves useful today so hopefully that will keep everyone happy while we do some more scouting outside."

I hope to start on some larger projects. I think its too big a project to start repairing the tower, but I should be able to stabilize it some - to make it safer. And then I want to start on the walls. I'll likely need a lot of labor type help when I get started. And some lumber to build ramps and lifts and such. Lilith will ask the residents if there might be limestone in the area for a source of mortar.

Seems reasonable. Polonius agrees, though clearly deferring this to the pair with engineering experience. Has anyone managed to speak to the priestess? Or possibly had a chance to ask around about my son? he adds hopefully.

I did ask Polo. And only got a report of a lone gnome. Lilith relates what she heard.

"We should start getting treebodys to fort. Also wood good to keep warm and snuggly."

"Is there a source of good lumber nearby? That's not a bad idea, but I seem to remember that not every tree is suitable for logging or even burning. Not to mention logging makes a lot of noise..."

As Lilith asks around about limestone, most people shrug and indicate they don't know either what it is or where to find it. Brae pipes up

You might ask Quinn, he's traveled around the area a fair bit by all accounts, treat him gentle though...

she leans in to you and speaks confidentially

He was out there a long time on his own, he's only just coming back to us, we're trying to give him the time he needs

Lilith recalls major tools such as a crane would require serious logging, meaning manpower and noise, what you've heard the keep does is send a few men out every week to go to the nearest forest and find a suitable tree, cut it down then drag it back. That one tree takes them the entire day and usually lasts a week or so as fuel for cook fires and materials for other things.

Shayliss murmurs something about being tired and heads off to the guest room.

The doors to the hall open, for a moment letting cold air gust in before a newcomer closes them again. As the figure walks towards you, unwrapping from the cold, you can see them glancing over the tables and immediately settling on you. As he moves closer you can see it's a human male, dressed in scout's gear, he swallows heavily and immediately asks

They say you came from Sandpoint, I know it's burning now, but did you see anyone else get out alive? he looks a combination of misery and desperation, his pack and weapon lying discarded on the floor as he awaits your answer...

Looking up at the man Lilith motions for him to join her at her seat in the hall. Yes we were in Sandpoint. Come and sit and I will tell you of our time there and who we met. I am Lilith Sylvari but the way. Might I know your name? Trying to set the man at ease she gets him tea and while he drinks she begins to tell the tale of Sandpoint, leaving out only her being bitten. So you see we were reacting to events really. Some still unknown adversary kept us reeling from threat to threat. When we returned to the burning shop and inn we failed to find either Kaiya in the shop or Meiko at the inn. And while we looked for them the fire prevented a thorough search. I can say there is hope for both. We escaped that burning city so they could have too, though Meiko was quite ill. I think Polo still has the medicine we fetched for her. If only we could have gotten back to her earlier...

After her story she will ask him of his travels hoping to be repaid in knowledge after sharing with the man.

Euron gets closer to the group making sure hes not overheard. "I'd like speak to this priestess Violet, but should we be calling out key figures here? I know nothing of her supposed god Abadar. Have we decided to fully put our stake in this place? I still have a nagging feeling, i can't just blindly accept this place when there are secrets being kept."

--

Standing up from his food to look at the man, he extends his hand. "We travel with others from Sandpoint, but first what's your name? I'm Euron."

Inactive

"What choice do we have right now?" Lenneth replies in answer to Euron's question. "Secrets or not, this place seems to hold the best chance of survival for us all; we've not heard anything about any other settlements that we could investigate."

********************************************

"Lenneth Barlow," she says by way of quiet introduction to the newcomer. "We're not Sandpoint natives but we did pass through there some time back." Other than that, Lenneth seems content to allow Lilith to tell the stranger their story thus far, listening quietly.

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Polonius is silent when the man steps forward. His stomach drops at the mention of survivors from Sandpoint, it bringing back every horrible memory of losing Kaiya and failing Ameiko.

He awaits the man's response as he tries to compose himself.

The man sits quickly, introducing himself as 'Savah' and whilst he thanks Lilith for the tea, has no mind for it, simply wanting to hear your tale. He listens intently though his face alternately lights up and clouds over as you run through your Sandpoint story. As you describe leaving the town burning, he collapses on his arms and begins weeping. Grief wracks his body as he shakes his head, finally screaming wordlessly at the ceiling. All around everyone else has stopped, initially from respect but now they look fearful.

He stands, grabbing up his spear and turning, stalking across to the bottom of the stairs and cursing under his breath

Liar...Liar...Liar...

he glances up and sees Whisper at the top, standing in his way. His face curls up in a snarl and he places a foot on the bottom step, leveling his finely made spear at the halfling. Her hands seem to twitch slightly and they are suddenly filled with knives. The threat of violence hangs in the air...
