The Tomb of Horrors Part 1 (4e) - Group 1

Game Master Rev Rosey

The monster that is Tomb of Horrors.
Two groups are going through this.
For some reason I set up a second game thread for Group 2, but not for Group 1.

Norrin hears Samson's rallying cry and charges to P27.

I quick draw my Sunblade as part of the standard action to charge.

Melee Basic Attack 1d20 + 17 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 17 + 1 = 33 vs AC; 1d8 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 7 + (5) = 19 radiant damage and I push the Vestige one square.

90/90 HP; 3/7 Surges:
Surge Value +22 HP
Initiative +13; Speed 6
Passive Perception 26, Passive Insight 18; Low-light vision
AP: 0
Conditions: none
Expended: Attacks on the Run, Furious Assault.

Through the Portal:
Darwyn groans loadly, then rolling onto his back and standing up thanks the gods that he had escaped the terrible 'grasp' of the Vestige. He looks around at his friends who are in nearby, not all of them he notes warily then says 'Where do ya reckon we are now then?'

Witnessing the abrupt disappearance of three of his friends, Norrin hurls himself at the Vestige in response to Samson's call. His attack lands true and he pushes the horror back from the portal.

Vestige has a aura 5. Creatures within the aura take a -2 penalty to attack rolls, skill checks and ability rolls.

An engulfed target is pulled into Vestige's space and is restrained. When Vestige moves, target moves with it. Engulfed creatures only have line of effect to the Vestige and only the Vestige has line of effect to the engulfed creature. When an engulfed creature escapes, it appears in a square of its choice adjacent to the Vestige.

Terrain notes: the usual 50 foot drop into necro-sludge around the edges. Fallen pillars provide cover and are difficult terrain. You are approaching from the west.

Portal group

Spoiler:

You are out of combat. You can't see the others at all, but you can try some knowledge checks on the different areas you can see.

You have choices. The archways, the hanging bodies and the Devourer's face will all repay your attention.

Arcana, History or Religion on the face
Perception and Arcana on the Archways
Perception on the bodies

Staring into the gaping mouth of the green face, Darion attempts to recall any stories the priests of Pelor may have told him growing up.

Religion: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23

"I think I've heard of something like this before."

Spoiler:

Darwyn is flummoxed by the archways, but Darion remembers something disquieting.

The green face is the infamous symbol of the notorious demi-lich Acererack. Something is slightly amiss with this representation, however. The eyes are closed.

[ooc]Sorry, in the list of knowledge checks, feel free to run a Perception check on the face.

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

@Levana: I think you can just make it over the difficult terrain and around the Vestige into the portal if you double move. I'll see if I can bull rush Samson into the portal.

@Rev: Can I using a standard action, bull rush the warlord through the portal?

I can see no reason why not. You'll get OAs from the Vestige as you go through the portal however you're delivered.

Female Elf Seeker, Crimson Hunter / 12

Move Action - Move to P24. She has a speed of 8 until the end of this encounter from Crimson Hunter's Action, PP feature, so she should be fine. She will the use, Minor Action - Encaging Spirits(recharged when bloodied), Burst 2 to push the vestige southwest 2 squares and slowed until EOMNT. She will then use her second move action to move over the portal. Let me know if this is not possible and Levana will come up with another plan of escape.

Levana moves with uncanny swiftness, pushing back the huge Vestige and disappears through the portal.

As he watches the elf bound effortlessly into the portal, Norrin seizes the opportunity and shoves the dragonborn into the portal as well.

"After you!" Standard Action: Bull Rush to push Samson into one of the portal squares.

Strength 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22 vs Fortitude and Norrin moves into Q27.

Once everyone is clear, the half-orc departs Moil via the portal. Shift to R26.

With a thud, Samson and Norrin join the gang within a domed chamber. A circle of runes in the ceiling marks the portal through which you've just passed. Your eye is drawn to a great green face carved into the stone of the floor beside you. The graven image of a horned devil stares up blindly - eyes blank, mouth opened to reveal a space of dead black within it. A single word has been scrawled into stone beneath the face; "Devourer".

Glowing Stone archways are set around the chamber, each with white mist swirling inside. Between the arches, some twenty well-rotted humanoid corpses hang from the ceiling, entwined with chains that drip black ichor to the floor.

Map - Group 1

Feel free to read the portal spoilers posted up to now.

Male Dragonborn Warlord/Battle Captain

We are out of combat so I will activate my Battle standard of healing and spend a healing surge. I have an inspiring word for anyone who needs it before we short rest

I'm just going to make a few roles where I feel like I may be useful.
History on the face (15) + 16 = 31
Perception on the Archways (5) + 6 = 11
Perception on the hanging bodies (3) + 6 = 9

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

My own regular surge will do me fine, thanks. At full, 5 surges remaining.

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Norrin examines the green face closely, but not too closely.

Perception 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (20) + 16 = 36

Rev DM wrote:

Does the word "Devourer" look like it was made during the construction of the face or was it scrawled afterwards?

Samson gains no additional information about the face, which distracts him too much for him to give proper attention to either the bodies or the archways.

Norrin, on the other hand spots odd scrapes around the gaping black hole of a mouth. It looks as though creatures have lowered themselves through it.

The word "Devourer" appears to be part of the orignal construction.

Female Elf Seeker, Crimson Hunter / 12

Using 3 surges to 75/81 HP
What does Battle Standard of Healing do for us?

You heal more efficiently.
Power (Encounter • Healing, Zone): Standard Action. When you plant the battle standard in your space or an adjacent square, it creates a zone of healing energy in a close burst 5. Whenever you or an ally spends a healing surge while in the zone, you and all allies in the zone regain 1 hit point.
This effect lasts until the end of the encounter or until the battle standard is removed from the ground. Any character in or adjacent to a battle standard’s square can remove it from the ground as a standard action.

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

The half-orc walks an anti-clockwise path around the chamber, inspecting each of the archways.

Does every archway have a corpse or are there some that are empty?

Sorry, Norrin, my description was unclear. The archways themselves are mist-filled and you can see nothing in any of them. The corpses are hanging from the ceiling.

Out of the corner of his eye, Norrin sees a slight movement above him.

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Thanks for the clarification. I misinterpreted "between the arches" as "inside the arches".

Norrin turns, and like a naive protagonist in a horror story, hopes it's just swaying caused by the wind.

Norrin's optimism, is, of course, totally misplaced.

MAP - Group 1

Place yourselves on the map, if you'd be so kind and roll initiative.

Take 2,133XP each for bypassing the Vestige and the associated skill challenge. Your running total is now 37,666XP each.

Init: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26

'Never a moment's rest!' Darwyn laments as he tries to recoup himself to face another deadly battle.

Second wind!

Still bloodied, 40/84 hp

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Initiative 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

Mr Axebeard will stay in J5… for now.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Did we have 5 minutes? L13, please. 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

If we had 5 minutes, I spent 2 surges to get to full, leaving me with 5. You can leave me where I'm at on the map. Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Male Dragonborn Warlord/Battle Captain

There is good for me.

Int 7+12=19

You had time for a short rest.

Dropping from the ceiling and flying gracefully if menacingly over the party are two shadowy wraiths. Unarmed, their arms extend to form blades of inky shadow.

Note that at present they are flying four squares above you.

MAP - Group 1

Init so far
Swordwraiths - 34
Lyan - 30
Darwyn - 26
Norrin - 22
Samson - 19
Darion - 16

Just need Levana to roll init and confirm position.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Aw, c'mon. I blew a 20 and the baddies still go first? Bah.

Init +19 gov. I didn't write this thing :)

Any chance a religion check would give us some info on these things? Religion 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20 just in case.

Darion racks his brains. The best he can remember is that that are medium humanoid undead beings formed from shadow and the dead essence of fallen heroes.

Female Elf Seeker, Crimson Hunter / 12

Initiative Check, 1d20+11=18
She is good in H13

Like graceful, doomed birds, the swordwraiths converge around Darion, long fingers reaching for his throat.

Still three squares up. They have reach 5

Shadow Sword (Ref). On hit target is weakened (se).
1d20+20=31 - S1 v Darion. Hits. 2d8+7=17 necro (yes, another great design choice on the damage front)

@Team: Know that "forced movement can become three-dimensional when the target is flying", means those of us with such powers can pull the wraiths towards the ground.

Don't have my own move ready, but I think it should be 9 to Darion -- resist is per attack, not turn. Also, my resist is 15 :-D

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Delay.
Lyan could hardly be designed more poorly for this situation. He can attack at range 1/encounter. Basically, he can't attack them and they can barely hurt him. I'll watch for something else to happen. He can help buffer damage to others if they switch to more a vulnerable target.

Darwyn lets forth a roar of thunderous proportions, a yell which screams triumph to his allies, and defeat to his enemies.

Shout of Triumph, affecting S2
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34 vs. Fort
1d8 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 and pushed 3 squares into door 7

hp: 40/84; surges 3/10; Encounters Used: shout of triumph

Darwyn - you had time for a short rest, if you wanted to use surges to restore hp you can do so.

Darwyn's melodic scream touches something long forgotten in the swordwraith and it backs away. As it enters the archway, its posture and expression change completely and it looks with baleful eyes on its former ally.

Swordwraith 2 is dominated (se) and will attack Swordwraith 1 until the condition ends.

Nice work! Don't forget the +3d6 damage on a crit from your Cli Lyre.

Norrin takes aim at where he thinks the wraith's vitals are/were.

Designate S1 as Hunter's Quarry.

Biting Volley + Furious Assault w/ Prime Shot 1d20 + 17 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 17 + 1 = 38 vs Reflex; 10 + 10 + 3d6 + 2d6 + 1d10 ⇒ 10 + 10 + (2, 1, 1) + (2, 2) + (6) = 34 damage.
1d20 + 17 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 17 + 1 = 27 vs Reflex; 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 damage.

Move to H5.

Wow! That was fun! I had a wierd feeling that the door would empower the swordwraith! I'll use one more surge during the rest.

3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 1) = 9 Crit Damage.

Norrin's knowledge of wraith anatomy, acquired who knows where, does not betray him. Shreds of shadow fly apart as the first arrow strikes true. The insubstantial being takes less harm than he would like, but he definitely knows where its kidneys are. The second arrow clatters uselessly on the floor.

Sorry to be a such a pain, but I forgot to maximise Hunter's Quarry damage against S1 (8 more damage) and I should mention that Darwyn gets 2 more damage for his crit on S2 (implement die). Cheers!

Female Elf Seeker, Crimson Hunter / 12

Free Basic Attack from Samson - Ravaging Shot(considered RBA), 1d20+21=29 vs S1 AC, 1d10+20=27 damage and S1 gains vulnerable 5 to all damage until EOMNT.
Move Action - Move to J16, (Whatever square keeps her out of their 5 square reach and maintains Line of Sight to both.)
Standard Action - Binding Shot, 1d20+18=32 vs S1 AC, 1d20+18=35 vs S2 AC, 1d10+11=19 damage(half on miss) to both(another 5 damage to S1 for vulnerable 5 all, if the first attack hit) and if both attacks hit, slide S1 5 squares to a square adjacent to S2, and each target is bound by vines (save ends). Until this effect ends on a target, that target can’t move by any means to a square that isn’t adjacent to the other target. When a target makes a saving throw against this effect, the target can take 10 damage to gain a +5 bonus to the saving throw.
