Excited at the prospect of the games of chance before them and playing in such a fine establishment, Radek and Kara take the offered seats at the table. Pjiana remains standing for the moment as she wants to continue to observe. Avery also keeps an eye out on the games for the moment.

With two new players the other gentlemen smile a greeting and the dealer nods to everyone that they are ready. Two men put down a stack of wooden chips in front of Kara and Radek. The chips have a very small ruby embedded on one side and on the other a number stamped. The dealer explains that the numbers represent how many gold pieces each chip represents. The chips are stamped with either a 5 or 10. The friends have a stack of 15 chips stamped with a 10 and 20 stamped with a 5.

The other three players all appear to be locals and all are richly attired. They also all appear to be somewhere between their middle thirties to late forties in age. They appear more like businessmen than anything else. They are all friendly but are quiet for the moment. They introduce themselves as Theo, Deangelo, and Harrison.

The companions look on as the dealer expertly and quickly shuffles the cards and then deals out two cards to each of the players.

Theo, Deangelo, and Harrison toss a 5 gp chip into the center of the table. The dealer waits for Radek and Kara to toss in their ante as well.

Post your action and then go ahead and make a Knowledge roll behind a spoiler tag. We'll need to be honest and not look at each other's rolls. I'll keep up with the rolls for the other guys. Let's see how this goes!
Order for placing bets the first hand will be Radek, Kara, Pjiana, Theo, Deangelo, Harrison. Second hand would start with Kara and move down the line. Third hand would start with Pjiana and so on...

Cards, cards, cards:

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Bluff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Kara daintily places in a 5gp chip and stares at her cards very intently, to the point of all but ignoring the other players, her face a canvas of obvious confusion. Suddenly, with a voice that drips with pure ignorance, she blurts out, "Radek, I'm sorry, but I don't know the rules very well. What are the hands that can beat this Royal Flush?"

The other men at the table can't help but chuckle at the joke from the halfling. With only two cards showing she can't possibly have a hand worthy anything. In time the dealer will turn over the other cards that all players will use to build their hands.

Let's assume its like Texas Hold'Em in that way. Thus the 5 hands.

Yep, the joy of everything being untrained with a low Cha character.

Pjiana hesitantly sits down next to her new companions, unsure what she is doing, but trying her best.

Now that everyone has had a chance to look at their hands and study them as well as the other players, the dealer turns over the first of the five cards that will eventually be displayed. The first card turned is The Bear! One of the most important cards in the game and it is the first card turned in the community deck. If another player has a Bear in their hand then they would be off to a decidedly good start.

The dealer looks to Radek to place a bet if he wishes.

Radek has opportunity to bet first, then Kara, then Pjiana.

Do any of us know if we have the Bear? Or was that just fluff?

Also, do we get reads on what the other players seem like according to our Sense Motive checks? Maybe the Bluff and Sense Motive checks should be out in the open so we can react accordingly?

Radek nods and tosses a 10 piece into the pot. "I'll go 10."

Kara smiles as the Bear is turned over and squels like a little girl. "Awww, that's cute card! It looks almost the same as the one I have! Since Radek put in ten, I guess I'll put in ten too."

Kara puts in a ten chip with clumsy, fumbling fingers.

Y'know how pros are always looking for a tell? I've been told they get confused when faced with information overload, not unlike how radar can get blown by white noise countermeasures.

Theo, Deangelo, and Harrison all also see the raise. The other players work to try and figure out the new players, searching for any tells as the halfling Kara attempts to overload them with information.

With all the bets placed, and with a very healthy 90 gold crowns worth of chips in the pot, the dealer reveals the next card. The card bears the image of a White Stag. Another important card but not as helpful as the Bear.

You all have two cards in your hands that only you see. The dealer will reveal 5 other cards, one for each hand of play, that are community cards. Everyone will use those 5 cards, plus the two in your hand to build your final hand. Whoever has the best cards when the last is revealed is the winner (whoever has the highest DS in game terms).

Let's try revealing the Bluff and Sense Motive checks then. Maybe that will help get an understanding of where you are. So, this round, hide your first skill check but show the Bluff and Sense Motive checks.

Kara puts in a ten, and then another ten, looking for all the world like the chips are mud-covered snakes, waiting to bite her AND make her clothes dirty. If any try to tell her the game doesn't work that way, she ignores them and starts playing with her hair, possibly petting Nora.

I'm assuming that Pjiana wants to see Kara's raise of 10 and will meet it and go no further.

Pjiana tosses in one of her 10 chips and with a frown, Theo tosses his two cards to the dealer.

"Too much for me," he says as he turns to Harrison.

"Not for me," replies the other with a smile as he meets the bet.

Deangelo also meets the bet as does Radek. There are now 140 gold crowns worth of chips in the pot.

With all the bets in and now with only the five players, the dealer turns over the third of the community cards. The Badger is the card turned which does nothing really when combined with the two cards showing, the Bear and the White Stag. But it could be important depending on what remains hidden in each player's hand.

I would hate to meet one on a bad day though. They have nasty tempers.

A small gathering of patrons and staff has begun to settle in around the table as the game draws to a close. Two hundred and forty gold worth of chips lies scattered about in the center of the table. The dealer has three cards showing before him, the Bear, The White Stag, and the Beaver. Conventional wisdom would say that Deangelo has the better odds of winning and the slight smile on his face shows his confidence. With all bets in the players begin to turn over their cards and reveal their hands.

Harrison turns over the Duck and Goose which shows that he was primarily bluffing the entire game, although apparently not doing too good a job of it. Pjiana goes next and reveals a Beaver and a Panther. The two Beavers, coupled with the Bear put her in the lead. Radek is next and he turns over a White Stag and a Lion. The two Stags beat Pjiana's two Beavers (That is a rather odd sentence to type... :)). But Radek's joy is short-lived as Deangelo reveals his two cards. The first card a Beaver. He turns over the second and it is another Bear, giving him two pair!

Deangelo prepares himself to pull in the stash of chips, knowing that the only two cards that could beat his hand would be the last Bear and the only Bee in the deck. Kara shyly turns over the Bear.

"I know this one is good," she says coyly, "but I don't think it means much without this cutie!" She then flips over to reveal the Bee!

Deangelo's lips go tight and a straight line spreads across his jaw as he grits his teeth. The crowd cheers around the table as they see the diminutive and talkative Halfling win the pot!

After a moment, Deangelo's mood softens and he smiles at Kara, "I hope that you will give me an opportunity to win back some of that?"

240 gp worth of chips to Kara. Radek and Pjiana are both out 45 gp worth of chips by my count.

As the dealer shuffles the deck and prepares for the next game, he looks at Brynwyrdd and Avery to see if they are going to join their companions? Or the two could go over to one of the other tables to attempt to take money from someone other than their friends.

She glances at Radek and Pijiana. "Are you two for another round? Or shall we cash out now?"

Kara follows Radek's suit and orders a drink. Something girlish with the word 'fuzzy' in the name, indicating her prefence to stay.

So I have 490 in chips now? And Radek and Pji (can I call ya Pji?=) have 205, ya? If we cashed out, would we get the entire value?

This is followed by a deliberate stare and smile at Deangelo. Kara knows that if she can get him thinking more about what's under her bodice than what's on his cards, her purse could be all the heavier for it.

Kara continues her running editorial. "Ugh, how can you think they're cute. They've got all those spines all over. If you tried to pet one you'd be pulling needles out of your hand for a week."

Card:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Kara sees the 10, and matter-of-factly follows it with a 20 raise.

Bluff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
SM: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

"Now anteaters, _those_ things are just adorable. Running all over the place with the adorable long noses. You just wanna give it a nose-kiss. And you could, because it wouldn't bit you. Can't. It might lick you back, but that would be hella cute. And then it would lead you back to its pot of gold.

What do you think, Radek? If an an anteater lead you somewhere, would you follow?"

Bluff to send secret message: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

If you're Radek, or the DM, or made a 23 SM:
'If you lead, I'll follow. As in, if you keep raising, I'll raise back.' *wink*

How she manages to wink with her voice is as yet unclear.

Sense Motive to catch Kara's message: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Card Randomizer:

Being completely unaware of what Kara is trying to say, but hoping that she finally has some decent cards, Pjiana calls the bet and raises another 20.

Na, hedgehogs are great. You just need to know how to talk to them. They only stick you if you are mean, or an idiot.

Radek looks back at Kara, clearly confused. He nods in Pjiana's direction. "I don't think you're talking about groundhogs. They're like big, tail-less squirrels. And hedgehog spines don't come out. Maybe someone showed you a porcupine once and told you it was a groundhog?" Clearly distracted by all this rodent talk, Radek calls and raises 20 again when it comes back to him.

Bluff: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Don't even know why I bother rolling this one...
SM: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Spoiler:
Kn:Gamb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 Ha. I'd like to see the results of a critical fumble on this check, DM. :)

"Oh! Yeah, a porcupine, that's what I was thinking of. I don't think I've ever seen a groundhog. Unless they are those cute little things that always stand up? But those might be chincillas. Or Meerkats. Wait, aren't all cats meercats? Because people always saying 'mere, cat! 'mere cat! Don't have much use for them, unless you're racing, and have a bag of them. At least they're not gophers, those things arn't much help. Unless you want a map, because then you need a cart of them."
...
What?"

Kara eyes the pot with some avarice. With the three of them raising in a row, the call was now 60 to the other side of the table. A steep hill, even with good cards.

Pjiana, getting more and more confused, but hoping that it will increase the party's odds, tries to keep up with the halfling's banter.

They are not 'mere cats. They are herd cats. I hear that cat herding is a popular pastime in Galt.

Pjiana will call the bets, but not raise any more, being at least a little cognizant of the amount of money that is being tossed about.

With all of the raising going on, Harrison finds that it is all too much for him. He folds and tosses his cards to the dealer.

Deangelo sits back and watches the players reveal their cards. Theo thinks that he has the hefty pot when when the man to his right turns over his two cards. Both Bears! Deangelo easily wins the pot and smiles broadly at Kara and Pjiana as he leans over to rake in the chips.

Final Numbers:

Total pot was 955 gp.

Each of you lost 135 gp that round.

Money after two games:
Pjiana: 70
Kara: 605
Bryn: 115
Radek: 70

You can attempt another game but you would have to be more disciplined in betting without throwing in some of your own money. Let me know what you wish to do.

Final card total:
Deangelo: 134
Theo: 128
Kara: 110
Pjiana: 108
Bryn: 80
Radek: 67
Harrison: 38

Now that the campaign is starting and getting a bit far afield from here, I'm fine cashing out. I thought I had some good stuff that round, but even still came in third! LolZ! Unless you guys want to keep going? I'll follow your lead.

We can go one more round, sort of all or nothing. Unfortunately, Pjiana is really not build for this. Her good Sense Motive does not really help much, and with only +1 in the other skills, it is a tough climb to have much of a chance. She actually rolled really well in that last one and was still way behind.

I'm fine cashing out. Leaving with some money (if we can indeed cash out on the mayor's credit) would let us buy more supplies. I was thinking a good map or set of maps of known Iobaria would be helpful (i.e.- MW tool on Survival checks to navigate around Iobaria). That's about all Radek has enough money for.

Mmmf. My instinct is to cash out now. Pji is right, we just don't have the build for this. A Mage with a high int. might have a chance at this, but none of us are really geared for that. 'A bird in the hand' and all that. Especially if KingmakerDM will let us take some of these goods and buy yet-even-more-better goods to sell. Getting the profit train going, that's a good time! =) Pji, you okay with that, or are you solid about having one final toss?
