The city of Aian, a place of great promise and of great fragility, lies at the southern border of the lands known as The Steadfast, a region loosely allied under nine flags. The Nine Rival Kings have a wary peace; they are held together by a deep fear of the unknown and by imposing geographical boundaries. The Nine are comfortable enemies. Historically balanced in power & position, they keep one another busy by fighting petty & timeless squabbles. It is from in and around these lands that you all emerge, each dislodged from the comforts of home by forces that at once unite us and leave us alien. Forces that enable us to tell our stories, and that urge us to weave the tapestry of our life from the fibers we can seize from the chaos around us.
You all enter Aian from different roads. But forces in the city conspire to drive you together. Large machinations are at work, seeking to disrupt the balance of power that has long kept the lands of the Nine distinct. The rulers are not content with the petty squabbles of their fathers, each is grasping for power and resources to upset the status-quo. Resist or submit, change is coming to The Steadfast, will you sit passively on the sidelines of history, or will you rise up to claim your place?
Greetings Travellers,
The Play-by-Post (PbP) format is relatively new to me, but it seems like a natural fit for the type of campaign I like to run. I am running a table-top game of Numenera, and have gotten so hooked that I am now seeking to begin a separate narrative campaign with a few of you internet denizens. The campaign that I am running is based on the content from the Numenera Rulebook and the Ninth World Guidebook mostly, although the story will be one of our mutual construction.
I envision the campaign beginning with some training wheels, as I learn the PbP format and we all become more familiar with the Numenera system. But, I feel confident that before long we will be flowing free and clear, trodding paths through the newly-virgin soil of the Ninth World.
I am modelling my PbP format from Fabain Benavente, and as such these next two paragraphs are taken directly from his recruitment page.
The pace will be about a minimum of four to five turn recaps per week, and I will do all the ‘passive’ dice rolling (in the interest of speed, I’ll roll things like defense actions, initiatives, etc.). I am looking for "roleplayers" whose posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to post at least once EVERY day (more is better) so if you can't meet that schedule, please do not bother applying to the game. Numenera really lends itself well for good, descriptive, storytelling so that’s what I am going for.
If this sounds like a game for you, then post a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, d) portrait or picture, and e) crunch. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game. I don’t think there will be much competition for character spots given the rules, world, and my particular style of PBP. However, I want well developed PCs with regards to appearance, background (we’ll work on PC connections once players are selected), and personality. Crunch should be drawn only from official Numenera products (I don’t have The Strange or the Cypher System books). I will roll for your cyphers, oddities, etc. You may use the character here to format your fluff (not yet developed in sample) and crunch.
I would love to begin the game by May 16th, 2016, applications will be accepted until we have a full party of 3-5.
Please reach out with questions and suggestions, I look forward to leading a few of you through our collective imagination in The Ninth World Turns!

[spoiler=Appearance]He is a taller than anyone else standing at 6'5. His mechanical parts are implanted under all of his skin and coating his organs with easily seen black tattoo like mechanical markings under his skin. It glows with a molten hot dark red substance flowing through it. On the palms, middle of the chest, bottoms of the feet, and the forehead have a runic symbol on it that connects to each other. He has colossal muscles that complement his chiseled features. He was golden brown skin with silver eyes. His hair is a deep dark black along with his facial hair. He wears a black suit of runic armor with dark red undertones. He carries a large curved sword that shares the same color of his armor.[/spoilers]
I am not sure of the crunch yet but I am a mechanical nano who consorts with the dead.

ATXRedBeard |

Cool, thanks for the interest! Have you already received the book Haruhiko88?
Pablo - I like it! I don't have the book in front of me but I think most of the swords are medium weapons and nanos are only proficient in light weapons - so you would be swinging the sword with a -1 step penalty. Let me know if the sword is fluff or if you are thinking about the character as a Bladesinger / Eldritch Knight type guy and we can try to figure something out.

Mechanus |

Hey GM,
Thanks for hosting!
I'd like to try out for a spot but I know little to nothing about the area of the Ninth World where the game will start so I will have to do some reading.
I originally wanted to play a nano who fuses mind and machine; see crunch and very preliminary fluff in the alias but I may change my mind once I read a little background.
In any case, you'll hear from me again.
Game on!

ATXRedBeard |

Mechanus (Fabian) - Thanks for applying! I plan on posting some more lore & campaign fluff soon to give everybody time to adjust their backstories before we begin - stay posted! Good call with Tough - I haven't seen it on a Nano but it is definitely a strong choice. I look forward to seeing how Mechanus makes his way through the world - I think Fuses Mind and Machine will be fun to RP!
Altha, I want to be supportive of taking non-human characters but I am trying to think of the effect it will have on the whole group. As I understand the world, visitants are relatively uncommon and, specifically as a Nalurus, I would imagine you would face a lot of hostility wandering around - especially entering a crowded city. Diruk have some pretty powerful stats, especially with Needs No Weapons we are talking about 4 armor and might edge of 3 at Tier 1.
Maybe you could tell me a bit more - story wise - how you think you would fit them into the game?

SkieBorne |

(Altha's main account)
Fair points. =3 I'm actually leaning more towards the Diruk. And the thought that I had was that it wouldn't really make sense for living rock to wield weapons, so an unarmed style would suit it best.
I was also thinking the tie in could have something to do with the Diruk having been captured and subdued as a mineral and crystal source, as well as a heavy labourer. The reason for the Diruk to travel in the first place would have been to start a new colony and it was during that travel that it was hunted down - instead of being killed outright, somebody had the great idea to keep it alive so as to have a renewable source of minerals and crystals... and labour between harvests.
Like any living being, the Diruk (tentatively named Basai) would not relish the thought of death. While this mistreatment would have fostered a sense of distrust, a few of Basai's handlers were kind with it, eventually working to help free it after the instability in the region caused the business/owner to collapse. Or it could be freed sometime early in the story ICly if that works better. The character's story would pick up immediately after being freed, I think.
A Diruk can't gain any more help from wearing armor, so it would cap out at 4 I believe. My thought was that it would be a Diruk, newly freed and conflicted as to the kindness/cruelty of humans. Not much to speak but also loyal to those who rescued it - and it's not emotionally cold, so Basai would potentially come to empathize with the quests. Being a Diruk, it would be uniquely suited to act as a guard and laborer, shielding the rest of the party when able.
Edit: I should also mention I don't see this character being taller than 7feet and being more along the lines of ropey cooled lava in texture then stacked rocks. Overall on the more humanoid side =3

ATXRedBeard |

Just to keep everyone updated on my thoughts. I am glad we have so much interest already! I have a bunch of projects to wrap up next week but I am also eager to get writing for this content. I'll have some time over the next few days to get some more story & fluff up.
I am getting excited thinking about these characters! Lots of GM Intrusion options with a Visitant and all those juicy descriptors/foci.
If any of you want to start giving me some rough "personal mission" types of things, I would be happy to begin the campaign with character specific hooks. I am already thinking about how we could make the rescue/freeing of Basai into an opening mission. I generally don't try to re-invent the narrative wheel with my storytelling, but I will be making a good effort to surprise you guys.

Altha Kein |

Awesome! That's the kind of idea I had in mind! =3
As for staying with the group, I'm sure we can sort something out. Is there something I should keep in mind for the initial backstory or are you thinking of things that will play out in-story? I'm all for unknown hooks and whatnot.
Also, I drafted a crunch sheet for you to review Basai Character Sheet Draft
Edit: If it interested people, could have something to do with a Diruk trafficking ring peppered in somewhere, if not non-human body part trafficking.

Sadly I do not have my hard cover yet. Although I do have a few pdf's that a friend gave me for my birthday, so I can build a character and outfit it with equipment, just not cyphers or oddities.
I'll work on the crunch tomorrow, but the basics would be a martial artist with a shield. Carries around a jeweled weapon of some kind.
Glaive Connection: 17 Your master wrote a book on the martial arts. Sometimes other warriors seek you out to ask about it's stranger passages.
Source of Power: 48 Intentional or Accidental immersion or treatment with ancient chemicals or radiation.
I think I have an idea forming.

There is an ability called Sculpt Flesh(2 Intellect Points) in the Character Options Book that allows Nano's to do 4 damage with melee unarmed strikes for 10 minutes. I think we could alter this ability to suit your concept - you would need to activate it and then be able to use a sword (4 damage) in each following round without a penalty. Let me know if that could work for you.
You could choose how it worked - maybe your character normally carries a dagger but when you use the ability it creates a force sword out of it. Maybe you carry a sword and this ability puts you into a martial trance so that you can use any medium weapon without penalty.
Thoughts?

I like the idea that you studied with a master, lots of RP room with that. I haven't been thinking about sources of power much honestly, you are making me want to revisit some of my character ideas to think about source of power fluff!

ATXRedBeard |

I posted the Gameplay tab if you want to dot & delete you are welcome.
Also, here is some fluff to get a since for how I am imagining the city.
Entry 7
“I arrived in Aian yesterday evening and managed to find a room in a traveller’s inn. It is hard to believe, but the rumors appear to be true. This city, if you can call it that, is total chaos! There are no walls or gates, no guards posted, no tariffs or customs agents. Anyone could march anything through these streets without ruffling a feather or raising any suspicion! I depart now to try to get a greater sense of the city. It is difficult to have any idea of it’s size or structure from within these streets.”
Entry 8
“This city is anarchy on earth. Is there no government here? As I wandered the streets I found little to orient the mind. On every corner is a hawker, along every street are shops and stores aplenty. Signs and advertisements are hung at all angles, some shrieking in foreign languages, others scrolling messages day and night. I happened to be in the street trying to make sense of what was around me when I nearly got run over by a caravan. What must’ve been a dozen hulking beasts that took up the width of the alley and were covered from top to bottom with containers and bundles came lumbering through the street, barely seeming to disrupt the hawkers and rabble. I followed them for the better part of an hour before they made their way into a guarded courtyard. As I watched the caravan disappear around the corner, a rough approached me and told me off. I have attempted to make a crude map of the city, I plan to return here to try to get a better sense of what these men are guarding. Who could these beasts belong to?”
Entry 9
“It took me hours to find my way back to the inn last night! These streets defy all logic, one could almost believe that they change configuration constantly. While I wandered the streets looking for a familiar sight, I happened upon a large open-air market. I didn’t realize how claustrophobic these streets make you feel until I got the chance to catch my breath and have some space to myself. A man was boiling water on some sort of fire-box, so I paid to join him for some refreshment. I had begun to wonder if we could possibly be of the same species, these Aianians and the rest of us Milavians, but at least these people drink the same barley tea that we do! They can’t be all bad. I asked the old man for directions and he laughed at me! He told me to “trust in my feet to get me where I needed to go,” whatever that means.”
Entry 16
“I decided to relocate to an inn closer to that guarded courtyard, and I found work at a noodle shop along the street. Caravans are a pretty regular sight along this road, coming and going once every few days at the least, multiple times a day sometimes. After a few days of work, I asked the boss who those caravans belonged to and he told me not to ask those sorts of questions in this town. He said ”These streets don’t belong to nobody and it ain’t nobody's business who’s usin’ them neither.” These Aian’s are queer folk indeed, but one can’t help but feel free to be oneself in this city, if you have enough money that is! I am making just enough in this shop to afford my small room and board, and a bit more for myself.”

** spoiler omitted **...
Good stuff.
OK, I've also read a little bit about Aian and Milave. As you've writtne, Aian is a city frequently visited by caravans, which fits my very thin fluff where I envisioned Mechanus as a caravan guard. I'll flesh him out some more this weekend.
Questions:
It seems that we all come in from different paths (i.e., we don;t know each other); is this correct?
Also, what is the starting hook for the adventure? Do we need to be looking for work? Getting drunk in an establishment? Anything?
Game on!

ATXRedBeard |

Thanks Mechanus!
I chose Aian in part because there isn't much written about it. I think it gives each player the room to write about their own journey to Aian, and about their arrival. Also, there are a lot of places the group can go from there!
I don't think that we should assume that none of you knows one another. But perhaps we should wait until we finalize the party before we construct shared histories. I would love for each player to construct a few scenes that give the group a sense for who the character is and what makes him unique. It would be great if you had some ideas about how your history brought you to the region, or even to the city specifically.
You can post those scenes to the Recruitment and/or to your Alias and just let us know to look there!
Also, just to clarify for everyone. I added the Gameplay tab and said you could "Dot and Delete" thinking that that would make it easier for everyone to track this thread - not because I meant that your characters had been accepted & finalized for the game. I still want to wait out the recruitment period before finalizing the party.

Mechanus |

Here are the fluffy parts of Mechanus.
APPEARANCE
Mechanus looks like a young human male in his prime, at least he tries hard to. The man knows that something has been done to him and tries his best to hide the tell-tale signs of the ‘modifications’. The reinforced sheeting underneath his skin is easy enough to hide, unless someone grabs his limbs or strikes him. When that happens, Mechanus is well aware of the pliable metal that is underneath his skin. He’s seen it when he’s been cut, only a dull grey sheet of less than 1 mm thick but enough to offer some protection.
What is harder to conceal is the circuitry that runs down his neck and then disappears into his upper body. The young man wears his hair long to try and hide the coppery metal lines that sometimes flare to life. He then has to worry about a couple of openings in the back of his head, usually concealed with a hooded cloak or his long hair. The palm of his right hand also shows a round metal surface for which he almost always has his right hand in a fist.
But what he cannot conceal is the fact that he’s very much aware of a Numenera device inside his head. He hears it humming and whirring at times and he feels its impact on his entire body. The device can charge up his metal sheeting and project a field that repels almost anything, making him even harder to damage (ward). He can also allow his charge to run down his right hand and unleash an electrical pulse that can damage both organics and machines (onslaught).
BACKGROUND
Mechanus is very aware that he was not born with a whirring Numenera device in his head. But his memories of how that is now part of him are sketchy at best. He remembers some sort of dungeon underneath a large building or some sort of laboratory, maybe a fortress. And that he spent what seemed weeks or months strapped to a cold metal table. And he wasn’t the only one. [Plenty of hooks for the DM]
Priests or doctors or some sort of mechanics worked on his body. He remembers the painful weeks when his metal sheath sort of grew under his skin, consciousness coming and going at random intervals while his body was pumped full of liquids. He also has some recollection of his head being sawed open and something implanted in his brain. He can still run his hand through his skull and find the scars.
There are some memories of being trained in his new augmentations and being told that he now served a higher power, a power to change the world. He was also told that new powers were also embedded in his being, ready to emerge as soon as he gained mastery over them.
He then remembers a platoon of humans that broke into the lab and interrupted the experiments. The men and women fought the priest-doctors and set him free. He wasn’t sure that he was a captive at the time. He was told to run and hide, that they would be looking for him, to try and bring him back to the fold again. His liberators would be in contact with him again
Hurt and confused, he ran. With sketchy memories of who he was running away from, he continued to run. And they chased him, just like his liberators told him they would.
They came mounted on fast reptilian steeds called brehm; they didn’t stop chasing him until he crossed the Sadara River and into the frozen wastes of the south. [A tale for another time…]
He quickly learned that he had to hide and not only from his alleged pursuers but also from the common folk. He remembers finding himself in what people called the Cold Desert. The first village he found himself in was not welcoming of people who were different from them. He was almost beaten to death as soon as they saw his neck light up and saw the hole in the back of his head.
He then wandered the desert for a few months and honed his survival skills. His implants helping him stay alive in fights where a normal person should have perished. But by that time, Mechanus knew full well that he was not a normal person.
He worked in a mine where his resilient body served him well. He then hired on as a caravan guard. The caravan brought precious stones and metals from the mine to the trade city of Aian. [Possible connection with other PCs]
PERSONALITY
Mechanus is quiet and reserved, interested in how and why things work. He has excellent skills with Numenera/mechanical things. He is a risk-taker who lives for the moment and is uncomplicated in his desires. Loyal to his peers and to his internal value systems, but not overly concerned with respecting laws and rules if they get in the way of getting something done. Detached and analytical, he excels at finding solutions to practical problems.
The young man is very self-conscious of his appearance and tries to hide his ports and plugs by wearing some sort of hood and/or keeping his hair long. He worries that the whirring in his head will be audible to others. He’s also very concerned with people touching him for fear that they will feel his endodermic plating.
He is of two minds when meeting new people. On the one hand, he’s interested in getting to know them because they might be his liberators but, on the other hand, he’s very worried that these could be the people hunting him. His paranoia usually wins out and he’s always looking over his shoulder for the brehm riders.
---------------------
I'm not sure if you want to roll oddities for potential players but if you do so, I could probably incorporate them into my backstory.
Let me know if you have any comments and if there's anything else that you need to properly evaluate the PC for inclusion in your game.
Thanks again for hosting.
Game on!

Yeah, I will roll two oddities per character - you may choose which one to take. Feel free to customize your oddity a bit to suit your fluff.
Mechanus:
Mechanus Oddity 1: 1d100 ⇒ 82 Table 3
Mechanus Oddity 1.1: 1d100 ⇒ 96 A jar of oil that, when spread on metal, makes the metal glow with a faint radiance.
Mechanus Oddity 2: 1d100 ⇒ 82 Table 3
Mechanus Oddity 2.1: 1d100 ⇒ 26 A small round mirror that reflects nothing during the day, and reflects only the moon at night.
Basai:
Basai Oddity 1: 1d100 ⇒ 7 Rulebook Table
Basai Oddity 1.1: 1d100 ⇒ 15 Plastic disk that displays ever-changing but meaningless symbols.
Basai Oddity 2: 1d100 ⇒ 12 Rulebook Table
Basai Oddity 2.1: 1d100 ⇒ 76 Ceramic ring that makes you feel as though gentle hands are caressing your body
Nover:
Nover Oddity 1: 1d100 ⇒ 8 Rulebook Table
Nover Oddity 1.1: 1d100 ⇒ 2 Egg-shaped metallic bauble that occasionally spins and speaks in a language no one knows.
Nover Oddity 2: 1d100 ⇒ 27 Table 1
Nover Oddity 2.1: 1d100 ⇒ 52 An invisible, empty, hollow cylinder that is 9 in. long.
Umbral Dragon:
Umbral Oddity 1: 1d100 ⇒ 49 Table 1
Umbral Oddity 1.1: 1d100 ⇒ 73 Small jar that produces 1 oz green paint when the sun rises
Umbral Oddity 2: 1d100 ⇒ 76 Table 3
Umbral Oddity 2.1: 1d100 ⇒ 34 A length of chain that glows blue if touched by sweat or salt water

ATXRedBeard |

I'd also like to express my interest. I'd likely play a jack since they seem underrepresented. I'll come back with a more fleshed out concept, but I wanted to get my foot in the door as slots filled up.
Great! I am hoping for a well-rounded group composition and would love to see a Jack in my game.
You may pick one of the following oddities:
oddity1: 2d100 ⇒ (28, 88) = 116 Table 1, no.88 - Seven-inch square of cloth to which nothing - dirt, muck, tar, adhesive, etc. - will adhere
oddity1: 2d100 ⇒ (74, 91) = 165 Table 2, no.91 - A small gray bottle with a screw-off lid that looks like a piece of rock
You still have some time to get an Alias up & write a backstory scene or two. Thanks for expressing interest!

Balbus |

Sunergy again, presenting for your consideration: Balbus, a former thief who struck it exceedingly rich but is now in the throes of a midlife crisis. I took care to ensure that despite him being Wealthy he would be as motivated as anyone to take on tasks with a monetary reward. It's not about the cash, it's about the thrill of earning it!
I have one request that goes beyond the ordinary character creation rules. I was hoping that his starting light armour could be his old costume from back when he was known as the master thief "The Hound", and have it provide an asset towards concealing his identity. To compensate, the costume doesn't fit him very well anymore and would provide a one step penalty on movement rolls. Balbus isn't practiced in armour, so he'll only be wearing it for special occasions.
He would take the square of resistant cloth as an extremely fancy and eminently impractical handkerchief.

Are they still place for an other?
Hey Gayel - I'm still accepting applications yes. Please make a character & post with the alias you would like to play with to be considered. Having some scenes to illustrate your backstory will help to get your character selected. Here are two oddities for your character, you may choose one of them to keep. If you so choose, some players like to work the oddity into their backstory.
If you need examples of player profiles you can look at my other alias - Balanders or Gordimer - Also look at the other players that have posted to get an idea of what I am asking for. Thanks for your interest.
Oddity1: 2d100 ⇒ (30, 44) = 74 Table 1, A Metal Wedge that Always Points East when placed on the ground

He lived like a normal not rich child in Aian. Which mean to be very poor. In there, Lo had learned to survive. The night, his family were taking the garbage of the rich and where doing the best that they can to do something useful with. It was easy for Lo to replicate the same action his parent was doing.
One he hadn’t enough of this life. Without a word, he decided to quit Aian and search for a better life. In this better life was in the beyond.
So Lo man passed the majority of his life walking the Beyond, seen great and bad thing even losing a leg.
After this event, he felt it was the time that he finishes his self-exile and return home.
Personality
Lo sand is calm person, he haves seen many thing and he thinks he lost a part of his edge with his leg. Nerveless, he put a lot of effort in what he is doing especially when he need to patch something or to transform some trash into something useful.
He haves a dislike of any individual Aeon priest at first. He need to be sure that they are not the mad scientist kind. He uses cypher the fastest, he can. Life must be lived at his fullest because tomorrow you could die.
English is not my primary language so I am sure there errors here and there. But I am doing my best. Only the Crunch needs to be finish.

Balbus isn't practiced in armour, so he'll only be wearing it for special occasions.
He would take the square of resistant cloth as an extremely fancy and eminently impractical handkerchief.
Works for me Balbus - Thanks for getting your character profile up and for incorporating the oddity into your story. I'll let everyone know what the final cast of characters will be by Friday.

Yeah, I will roll two oddities per character - you may choose which one to take. Feel free to customize your oddity a bit to suit your fluff.
A jar of oil that, when spread on metal, makes the metal glow with a faint radiance.
A small round mirror that reflects nothing during the day, and reflects only the moon at night.
Is that a 'never ending' jar of oil?
If not, I'll take the mirror.
The deadline works for me.
Thanks!

I think never-ending within reason and within the scope of the campaign would be fine. If you try to cover a submarine or something that probably won't work. If you use it for your metal body parts or while exploring to keep a trail I don't see it running out.

Yes, never-ending in like 'it's replenished every day' sort of thing not that I can cover a submarine with it. :)
I'll take the jar then.

Ugh, this is unfortunate but I think I have to back out for now. I got hired for a new job today that starts at the end of the month, and I'm not certain if it'll leave time for two campaigns. While there's a good chance I could make it happen, I don't want to have to leave the party hanging if it becomes clear I need to split after playing through the first two weeks of introduction.
I'll keep an eye on the proceedings and if things are going well for me and a slot opens up later on I'll be around to fill it.

Congratulations on the new job, I understand completely - sad to hear it though. Follow along and reach out whenever!

In the effort to keep working on back story and to set the scene I am posting another writing prompt with suggested hooks for the characters that have completed their applications. This does not imply that these characters have been finalized, applications are remaining open through until Thursday.
Fate has brought each of you together on this day, though you have yet to realize that this will be anything other than an average day in Aian. You are all on the compound of the Merchant Lord Sidney Mintz, preparing to facilitate an otherwise ordinary and mundane exchange of gems from producer to distributor.
This compound is the one I roughly described before in the Aian Travelers logs. I am asking each of you to please help me by describing the following: (spoilers used to conserve space, not to hide information - you are welcome to read other applicants posts as well as your own)
To players that haven’t applied yet, don’t interpret this post as a closing of the application process - but please apply sooner rather than later. Many of the current applicants are excitedly awaiting the beginning of the game - as am I. When you make your character backstory, I would encourage you to pull events, locations, or NPC’s from my posts, or from stories of other players - with the caveat of keeping in mind that your backstory should still make sense even if the other player doesn’t get selected for the game. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to any new applications out there.
