Yousef's eyes glaze over as he slows his charge, and deliberately starts to make his way up the slope towards his friend. "Of course, my friend. I am sorry. I don't know what overcame me." When he reaches the top, Yousef will turn his back on the man, draw Tempest, and declare. "Please, let us be civil here."

The Exchange

As Bahram's summoning concludes, at the sorcerer's command the three-foot tall whirlwind he's brought forth hurtles towards where 'Kardswann' floats in the air, even as Bahram himself strides confidantly forwards, unleashing his mystic might as he goes! 'Kardswann' ceases his rasping chuckling as first the whirlwind slams into him on its way past then, moments later, Bahram's twin glowing missiles impact on his chest!

Quote:
"Wipe that look of your face monster! Maybee if you beg we'll kill you quickly!"

'Why you...' 'Kardswann' begins...

Quote:
"I, uh, er... WEB!"

As Lavender snaps out of her fascination and casts there's a sort of dull Fwump! sound as a spread of sticky spider-web strands erupts accoss the entire upper portion of the cave, engulfing the flying genie as it does so...

The cave's area is about forty feet across, so the Web covers the entire upper half of the room from the ceiling to about ten feet above the ground (the web itself being about ten feet deep, top to bottom)...

... A few moments later 'Kardswann' bursts out of the bottom of the web, landing in front of Bahram with some impact (enough to cause a web of cracks to spread across the cavern floor at that point), on one knee, with his greataxe clutched between his hands. Slowly standing to his full height, until he towers over the human sorcerer, the seven-foot tall genie glares down at Bahram, eyes glowing a deep red,

'Enough!' he declares... raising his axe high...

Adapting Yousef's action a little to fit...

As hyena-Keldar moves off to one side and changes back into regular dwarf-Keldar (since his movement's higher as a hyena he's better moving then changing, rather than changing then moving), Yousef heads back towards 'Kardswann' and Bahram, drawing Tempest as he moves, his eye seemingly glazed over as he says...

Quote:
"Of course, my friend. I am sorry. I don't know what overcame me... Please, let us be civil here."

Meanwhile, Rashid moves over to place himself between Bahram and 'Kardswann', and Felliped joins him...

No-one's seen 'Kardswann' do anything akin to spellcasting yet, so Spellcraft is telling people nothing. On the other hand, whilst Lavender (and everyone else) falls for Yousef's 'I'm charmed' bluff, Rashid picks up on the ruse... 'Kardswann' doesn't seem to have noticed though (i.e. he appears to have fallen for the bluff as well, and is ignoring Yousef heading over to 'join' him)... Phew - it's all getting complicated! :)

Keldar can start his SNA for his next round's action (or chose to do something else, of course). What's everyone else doing next round?

Bahram takes an invoulentary step backward as Kardswaan thumps into the ground before him, blinking his eyes in disbelief at the awsome power displayed by the evil genie. Relieved that Rashid and Felliped both move to guard him he shoots a ray of electricity at tha genie.

At least he is probably flat-footed; I doubt he saw that coming ;-)

The Exchange

Spinning down from the webbed ceiling, Bahram's small whirlwind makes another pass at 'Kardswann', but seems to glance off the genie's hide with no real effect...

Unleashing a crackling arc of lightning (and making sure to miss his allies) Bahram fires high, the lightning sailing over 'Kardswann's' head...

Quote:
"Yousef, what are you talking about! He's about to attack Bahram!"

Lavender casts her spell - there's the usual sloshing noise... but nothing seems to happen...

'Kardswann' laughs his rasping laugh out loud at the efforts of the sorcerer and sorceress, then swings his axe towards Felliped and Rashid...

... As he does so, his image seems to flicker a couple of times, then fade to a translucent outline - underneath is a camel-sized insectile fiend with huge claws, multiple eyes, slavering mandibles, and a long serpentine tail tipped with chitinous blades - the daemon Xulthos. The vaguely scorpion-like Xulthos is covered in glistening black chitin which seems to reflect light in a dazzling display, and sports insectile wings which it unfurls and sets to buzzing, creating an irritating and distracting sound. Hanging around the thing's neck is what looks to be an amulet of black iron and silver, and on the tip of one of its claws is wedged what appears to be a golden ring...

The dazzling colours reflected from the Xulthos's exoskeleton give a -1 penalty on attack rolls and a 10% miss chance for eveyone looking at it (no save). The drone of its wings means everyone needs to make a DC 18 Will save or be confused; those who make the save are still -1 on attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws. It's a mindaffecting and a sonic effect if that's important.

With the faint image of Kardswann still looking like it's swinging the axe, beneath that image the all-too-real Xulthos attacks Felliped and Rashid - one claw and its manibles rip bloody wounds across Felliped's body in mere moments, dropping the Chelish Magician to the floor - either unconscious or dead, it's hard to tell... The other claw tears a glancing wound across Rashid's shoulder, whilst the tail lashes, scorpion-like, from above, but is turned aside by the dwarf's armour and toughened skin... Rashid takes 4 Hit Points of damage.

To keep things moving, I'll make the saves for the guys left to act this turn...

Keldar's Will save=1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Yousef's Will save=1d20 ⇒ 15
Rashid's Will save=1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Confused, Keldar abandons casting his spell, and instead charges Lavender to attack her! But his wild swipe misses...

Yousef is confused, but manages to shake it off long enough to unleash a devestating series of blows against Xulthos, ripping through the daemon's chitin and causing it to scream a high-pitched scream... but still a long way off slaying it...

Having fought off the bout of confusion, Rashid takes his swing, expertly slicing another wound into the exoskeleton of the daemon...

The Exchange

Just to sum up a little: Bahram and Lavender need to make the Will Save before their actions next round. Those who are confused (Keldar and Yousef and either of the Sorcerers if they fail the save) will need to roll on the confused table (Core book page 566) to see what they do each turn... unless they're attacked, which means they'll automatically attack the character attacking them. Keldar and Lavender are 'closest' to each other, if that result comes up, Yousef is (thankfully) closest to Xulthos...

Oh, and just a reminder - Yousef doesn't get his Sneak Attack damage added to his extra damage from a Critical Hit.

Bahram's summoned whirlwind once more assaults Xulthos, but appears to simply deflect off the giant daemonic bug. Meanwhile Bahram steps closer to try to fry the daemon with the lightning contained in his hand... only for the thing to skitter nimbly out of the way... Bahram's still holding the charge, of course.

Pulling out one of her alchemical collection, Lavender hurls it at Xulthos, aiming for its maddening wings... but faces the same problems as Bahram as the creature appears to bely its own bulk in the speed that it moves, and the flask sails overhead to smash somewhere in the distance...

Focusing all its attention on Rashid, Xulthos lunges at the dwarven priest with mandibles, claws, and his lashing tail... Rashid heroically deflects both claws, but the daemon's mandibles score a deep wound across his chest, whilst the tail arcs over Xulthos's body to pierce right through the dwarf's stomach! Rashid takes... ouch... 34 points of damage! (The tail strike was a confirmed critical...) I believe that drops him to -9? Stabilization rolls ahoy!

Rather than save the day as their friend drops in a fountain of his own blood, Yousef and Keldar seems content to punish themselves in their ongoing confusion...

Bahram's whirlwind makes one more pass, this time missing Xulthos completely, before vanishing...

Bahram himself tries his best the grasp the medallion around the daemon's 'neck' (for want of a better word)... but once more Xulthos proves too elusive and the sorcerer fails to connect... Turns out Xulthos actually has a pretty good touch AC for a big guy...

Finding her potion, Lavender rushes over to the side of the fallen Rashid... Move action to find the potion, move action to get there, so no pouring down throats yet...

'Time to die...' announces Xulthos in his rasping voice as his mandibles and one of his claws manage to rake across Bahram's flesh, spattering Lavender and Rashid with the sorcerer's warm blood... Bahram takes 21 Hit Points of damage which, I think, drops him to -1, yes?

Lashing its tail towards Lavender, even as Bahram falls, Xulthos slices the tail's chitinous blades across the sorceress's face, opening a painful wound... Lavender takes 7 Hit Points of damage...

As Yousef continues his (losing) struggle with Tempest, Keldar shakes off his confusion just long enough to cast a curative spell and rush to Rashid's side - the dwarven druid's touch reviving his clerical colleague... just...

Tense stuff! So, we have Felliped and Bahram lying unconscious (or dead) at Xulthos's feet, Rashid likewise but now barely conscious, Lavender and Keldar both in melee range of the thing, as well as Yousef (although he's still on the other side of the daemon). Next round please!

The Exchange

I think it makes sense if I go with Rashid's suggestion and have Lavender feed her potion to Bahram. If not, it'll just be a wait until we find out what Lavender is doing... or I have her delay... which could be fatal right now... Besides, getting another PC back on his feet keeps it interesting for everyone, right? Hope that's all okay? So, with that in mind...

With Rashid stirring, Lavender concentrates on carefully pouring her restorative potion down Bahram's throat... leaving herself open to the daemon's attacks as she does so! Snapping at the sorceress with its mandibles, Xulthos opens a fresh wound across her back... Lavender takes 12 Hit Points of damage... but the impact and the pain only cause her to spill a little of the precious magical liquid she's applying, and Bahram's eyes flicker open as he returns to the land of the living. Lavender (sensibly) backs a little away from the powerful Xulthos... Administering a potion to someone else is a full-round action, but Lavender can still take her 5ft step in that case: which she just did! ;)

With Yousef and Keldar indisposed, and Felliped, Bahram, and Rashid all prone, Xulthos rounds on the retreating Lavender, the faint image of Kardswann (still vaguely visible overlaying the daemon) smiling as the insectile creature skitters a pace to keep up with the sorceress,

'You look to be a find choice for my new high priestess...' comments Xulthos in his inhuman, rasping, voice... DC 9 Will save (which includes the bonus for Xulthos being all violent and nasty) for Lavender to avoid being charmed... you never know, it might work... ;)

Momentarily overlooked as Xulthos menaces Lavender, Rashid, noting that Felliped is indeed near death, crawls over to let the Dawnflower's healing flow into the Chelish man... who coughs, blinking, then winces...

'What in the nine hells is that noise?' he asks...

With Xulthos now, technically, the closest to him (out of those still standing), Keldar takes a swipe at the daemon... with his scimitar, I assume? In that case, I'll take his second posted attack roll as a failure to confirm the critical threat... and opens up another slash across one of the daemon's back legs - Xulthos screeches, rounding on the dwarven druid as he does so...

As Yousef descends into some heartfelt philosophy, Felliped scrambles to his feet, snatching up his sword as he goes,

'Damn it all!' he curses, 'I've no power left for useful spells!'

Okay, so... next round. Bahram should be on 15 Hit Points now (post potion), I believe. He and Rashid are still prone though, and if they had weapons or items in hand they obviously dropped them when they first fell unconscious. We know what Yousef is going to be up to, Lavender may or may not be charmed, and Keldar... well, there's a good chance that Xulthos will be attacking him before Keldar's next turn, which means he'll then attack Xulthos from then on, due to the confusion. Keep at it!

Doesn't it fade with uncociousness? I'm not sure, I'll have to look it up or get a ruling from Profpotts.

I couldn't find any ruling on held touch spells and falling unconscious either. I usually rule that they discharge when you successfully touch anything (i.e. the spell energy is in your hand, primed and ready - you don't get to pick and choose if it goes off, it goes off when you next touch something), and I'd imagine that Bahram's hand touched, at least, the floor during his time away with the fairies (as they say in these parts). So we'd best call it discharged I think. To be honest this guy's pretty resistent to electricity anyway...

Rolling to his feet Bahram, with a quick gesture and some incanted words, generates a pair of glowing mystical bolts which blast across the short distance to Xulthos, slamming into the daemon's back and causing it to howl in pain and rage once more...

Rummaging once more in her bag of alchemical tricks as she backs away from the threatening insectile form of Xulthos, Lavender produces a thunderstone, hurling it past the daemon to impact the floor between Yousef and Keldar. There's a deafening BANG! as the strange little stone strikes the cavern floor... Another fine idea from Lavender! The tanglefoot bag Vs Xulthos's wings was brilliant... but poorly executed (damn you dicebot!), but I just made a quick roll to confirm Lavender hitting the much easier AC 5 to get the stone where she wanted it - that's a DC 15 Fortitude save for Yousef and Keldar to avoid being deafened... of course, they can voluntarily fail that save if they so wish (which will, indeed, both deafen them and immunise them against the confusion effect of the drone of Xulthos's wings as well).

A rasping hiss escaping the daemon's maws it starts to lash out at everyone around it! As Felliped steps in to attack, Xulthos's mandibles scissor shut around the Chelish magician's neck - taking his head clean off in a gurgling fountain of blood! Vicious claws strike out, ripping open wounds across Lavender's thigh and Keldar's chest... Both take 7 Hit Points of damage... Finally, the fiend's flexing tail whips a stroke across Bahram's face, the chitinous blades mounted on the tail's tip raking bloody slashes across the sorcerer's face... Bahram takes 9 Hit Points of damage.

As the mayhem continues, Rashid retrieves his scimitar (I imagine...) and gets to his feet...

There's a good chance Yousef and Keldar actually get to act, thanks to Lavender's quick thining there; otherwise, next round please!

"Felliped! NO!!" Bahram takes an invoulantary step toward the beheded magician, intent on helping him in some way but...

Yelping in pain at the deamons slash Bahram curses the pain beeing caused by the blasted thing, with tears of anger streaking down his face he does the only thing he can think off; take a step back from the vicious appendages and send forth another pair of missiles. "Die monster! Go back to the abyss!"

A wave of sadness crosses Rashid's face as he notes Felliped's passing...

Felliped! NO!

...but then his features become suffused with rage, as he turns upon the beast responsible, and does his best to skewer it on his scimitar.

"You will pay for that, and for all of the other deaths that you have caused, you miserable creature!"

Lavender clenches her fist in rage, lightning crackling uncontrolled around it, as she see's Felliped's decapitation. "FELLIPED!" She yells in rage!

However, before she can act out her fury, the beast rips a wound into her thigh, causing a burst of blood to spurt out onto the ground, and forcing her to one knee. Gasping in shock, she crumples to the ground into the pool of her own blood...

The Exchange

With Lavender's timely thunderstone deafening them to the maddening drone of Xulthos's insectile wings, Keldar and Yousef leap into action!

A swift slash of Keldar's scimitar opens yet another wound on one of the daemon's legs... it staggers a little and, seeming to have finally had enough, starts to lurch towards doorway out of the cavern...

... but Yousef is having none of it! With a powerful two-handed overhead stroke, the half-orc brings Tempest down, the frosty blade slicing through chitin, ichor, and flesh as it cleaves Xulthos's head from its body! There's a final inhuman scream (which even the deafened Keldar and Yousef 'hear' as it seems to echo through their heads...) as the legs of the daemon's decaptitated body skitter and convulse for a few moments before, finally, it lies still and dead.

With the passing of Xulthos, the translucent image of Kardswann fades... as does the image of the dark cavern, revealing instead a larged worked chamber, maybe forty feet square. Two rows of three marble columns flank the main walkway leading from east to west. A series of low, curved stairs at the opposite side of the room leads to a large concave recess in the western wall, with an elaborate throne perched at the top of the stairs.

Rashid:
You recognise the room you now find yourselves in as a funerary chamber dedicated to Sarenrae... it seems like Xulthos had used his powers of illusion to make himself feel a little more at home...

With the infuriating drone of Xulthos's wings gone, an eerie silence falls over the scene...

And... that's it for the main Adventure of book one! Congratulations all, good final fight too, with everyone helping out.

Everyone gets to level 5 now. Yousef can also note that Tempest has now evolved / synced enough with him to become a +1 frost weapon, which is nice... :)

I'll let you level and post what you do next (with the bodies of Felliped and Xulthos, for example). Getting out of the crypt shouldn't be a huge problem, as long as Rashid remembers to keep the flaming angels at bay... After that I'll run through some epilogue stuff.

The next question is, does everyone want to continue on to Book 2?

Sorcerer 5:

HP +5.5 (4,5 level +1 favored class) = 25
Skills: Diplomacy +1, Knowledge (Arcana) +1, Knowledge (Plains) +1, Spellcraft +1
Bloodline spell: Invisibility.
+1 2nd lvl spell/day
+1 1st & 2nd lvl spells known (Undecided, I'm thinking of Protection from Evil at first level and Scorching ray, acid arrow or glitterdust for 2nd. It would help if me and Lavender would discuss what might be the most effective combination of our spellcsting. I'd rather avoid any spell that need a dice roll though;)
Feat; undecided, maybee skill focus (knowledge (plains)), toughness or augment summoning.

I definately want to keep going, even if the next book takes another year, I'm simply enjoying this game too much to give it up.

The Exchange

Just in case it effects anyone's level-up choices, there's a year's downtime built-in to the Adventure Path now, as Kelmarane gets up and running again...
