Have you guys been in those two wings off the room we're in, above and below our position on the map? If not, Layaali would like to go there first. If you have, shall we go in the next gap/arch/whatever that's close to us?

Bruised and tired, and truth be told broken by two bloody encounters with the pugwampis, Uzma is more than happy to allow the newcomer to lead them.

"We explored very little, if anything at all really," he explains. "We heard the creatures as soon as we arrived, and engaged them promptly. By Gozreh, our path was twice cursed. Your coming is a blessing"

Uzma raises his hands in thanks to the heavens, offering a silent prayer.

May need to back you up a bit here...Layaali, I will rule that you have activated your halo first, as the two side chambers lie veiled in shadow.

The oracle of Vildeis walks into the western side wing. The ceiling here has remained intact over the years, helping to preserve a huge bas-relief statue of a muscular humanoid man with a pointy beard gesturing toward a huge mountain in the background, his face a picture of mortal concern.

(Layaali only) Knowledge Local DC 10:
The mountain in the background is Pale Mountain, largest of the Brazen Peaks and the site of many fell legends.

(Layaali only) Knowledge Religion DC 15:
The bearded figure is depicted in a manner similar to the way in which the faith of Sarenrae depict their saints, but this is not one of the more frequently honoured saints of that faith.

(Layaali only) Knowledge Religion DC 25:
This obscure regional saint is named Vardishal.

After perusing the western side wing, Layaali enters the eastern side wing. A similar statue adorns the eastern wall of this chamber, in this case with the bearded figure appearing on a hilltop to a group of robed pilgrims. The being holds up his hands, palms out, in a sign of peace. Though many of the faces and limbs on the bas-relief have been worn down or cut away, the expressions of those range from beatific to horrified.

A crude stone stele that seems to have been erected more recently than the abandonment of the monastery stands here as well. Its graven inscription reads: 'A ghost of unholy mien was purged from this place by Theodephus Estrovan, servant of Iomedae, 4691 ar.'

Layaali:
You discern the outlines of a compartment or a door between the legs of the figure on the eastern wall of this room.

"Hmmm..." Layaali muses aloud as she examines the carvings in the western wing. "This is Vardishal. He's a very obscure regional saint. I've never seen him depicted in person, before." She runs her fingers along the carvings. "Interesting."

In the east wing Layaali examines the stele, and offers a quick prayer to Vildeis as she passes by. She then turns to the carvings, pointing out Vardishal again. "This is beautiful work. It's a shame it's in such a poor state of repair..."

Suddenly she stops. She runs her fingers along the carvings, between the legs of Vardishal on the eastern wall. She places her fingers in the cracks and pulls, as if trying to pry something out of the wall.

Layaali tries to open the secret compartment, first by pulling it open, then pushing and then just generally fiddling with it.

The blessings of Vildeis unveil the well-hidden cracks of what appears to be a door to Layaali. As she fiddles and pushes at the door, she feels a tight but forgiving restriction to opening the door, as if something was in the way on the other side.

I moved you on the map to where the secret door is, Layaali. Could you give me a Strength check, please?

Uzma realises that Layaali isn't following him, and pauses in leaving the room.

Uzma, you can decide if you cast your light spell or not.

The suli shoves open the door with a grunt, snapping thick vines and displacing eye-level tufts of scrub grass from the door jamb. Inside, looming walls with no apparent doors enclose this small roofless garden. Monks must once have come here to relax and contemplate the ways of nature, but any order they might have brought to the place all those years ago is almost impossible to notice now, as a wild cacophony of multicoloured scrub plants and desert weeds have almost completely overgrown the space.

Drael stands aside to let someone else enter the secret garden.

Uzma makes note of the opportunistic scrub grass and overgrown dwarf joshua trees, but doesn't seem to find anything of immediate use. Layaali, however, notes something of distinct use.

Layaali:
This austere octagonal chamber has a tall roof and an aerie of leering gargoyles perched atop each point where a wall meets another wall. Having called upon the blessings of Gozreh too many times since sunrise, Uzma must now face life and death as no more than a common man. He sees in this trial an occasion to prove himself in the eyes of his God... He rushes into the room and attacks, confident that at the very least he will resist the effects of the vermin's attack, and draw them away from the others, and Layaali in particular.

    attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 121d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

    Another impressive attack...

What are you attacking, Uzma? And with what?

How much CON damage did the two suckling stirges to do Layaali this round?

    Desert Druid 2 | HP: 19/15 | AC 12 (ff 10) CMD 11 | F+4 R+2 W+6 | Initiative +0 | Perception +9 | Heat Shimmer 6/2

Those details would help... Ideally, the one right in front of me, with a quarterstaff!

Layaai, you've taken 4 points of CON dmg total. 2 from this round.

The druid rushes into the room and attacks the unattached and active pest but misses by inches.

    Round 2!

    Initiative Order:
  • Bug #1
  • Drael
  • Rafyyk
  • Bug #4
  • Korum
  • Bug #3
  • Uzma
  • The rapidly-swelling back end of the creature still attached to Layaali's chest reddens further.

Layaali, you take another 1 hp of CON dmg. That's now 5 total.

Rafyyk drops his crossbow and moves to grab the bug attached to his neck and pull it out.

    Combat Manoeuvre: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 SUCCESS!

Rafyyk pulls the bloody tip of the thing's nose out of his neck with considerable effort.

    Drael, you may act!

Forgive my sloppy movement, Dink. I was moving on my phone and accidentally got to the wrong square and then it wouldn't let me pick up the token again. Also, those will save rolls. Blech.

Oops, I had forgotten that Drael was away through today. Dum-dum DM move.

Drael rushes in past the fallen Layaali and moves to grab the still-suckling creature from the aasimar's chest.

    Grapple manoeuvre: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 SUCCESS!

The suli draws the blood-engorged creature from Layaali's supine form, holding it in his hand as it beats its wings uselessly. Meanwhile, the last remaining flying thing plunges at...

Korum, you take 1 point of Constitution damage. It is your turn as well!

Korum snarls in anger and pain as the disgusting vermin latches onto him. He brings his axe up, swinging it wildly at the creature draining him.

Korum, I'm going to impose a -2 penalty on your 'to hit' roll to wield a 2-handed weapon - your great axe - at yourself, essentially. Lucky for you that that still hits. Also, I have you at 7/7 hp given the one Constitution point of damage that you took.

    Korum:
It is a stirge. You have successfully identified it. You may also ask two questions about its abilities, if you would like.

The wizard brings up his weapon and swings the head of the greataxe down viciously alongside his body, cleaving the parasite in twain, its needle-like nose still stuck in his flank. The rest of the creature flops a few times on the floor of the chamber before growing still.

The pest currently held by Rafyyk attempts to break free of the half-orc oracle's grip.

    Attempt to Break Grapple: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 SUCCESS!

The flying creature bursts out of the hold and flies towards the ceiling, chased by Rafyyk's curses.

    Uzma, it is your turn!
