GM Dinketry |
"You truly are a marvel," Rafyyk mutters in a curiously-low voice as he accepts the crossbow from Layaali. "Thank you, Vildeis!"
Still awaiting Korum and Osonia!
Korum Scratcher |
Korum does what he does best. Grunts, pouts in disapproval, and slings another ball of acid upward.

Round 7!
The pugwampi snarl and spit, irritated at being unable to spy many open targets on the floor below. They take their shots at the half-orc wizard, suli, and druid on the fringes of the mist cloud.
Ranged Attack on Korum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 231d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3 CRITICAL THREAT!
Critical Confirm on Korum: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d3 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -2 NOT CONFIRMED! (1 hp dmg)
Ranged Attack on Drael: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d3 - 4 ⇒ (3) - 4 = -1 MISS!
Ranged Attack on Uzma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -31d100 ⇒ 68 HIT! (1 hp dmg)
The pugwampi make the most of their targets, however, pegging two of the three with arrows - the half-orc wizard receiving another painful arrow just in front of his left ear.
Uzma, you may act!
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
Uzma continues to attempt to attract the attention of the pugwampis, hoping to allow his companions to fell the foul creatures.
intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
GM Dinketry |
The pugwampi glared at by Uzma jumps back with a yelp, visibly shaken as he takes aim with his bow at the druid.
Ranged Attack on Uzma, Shaken: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 2 = 131d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3 HIT! (1 hp dmg)
Despite his fright, the pugwampi's arrows pierces the druid's left thigh.
Drael, Korum, and Layaali may act!
Korum Scratcher |
Once more, with gusto. Not sure what other choices I have - Korum is pretty badly built at level 1 :P
Acid Splash Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Acid Splash Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Layaali Twice-Born |
Well, now that Layaali gave away her only ranged attack to someone who can use it better... Hmmm...
Layaali smiles kindly at Rafyyk then turns and walks to the ladder.
"Cardinal Martyr, bless my sacrifice. Give this righteous soul the strength to work in your name." As she prays she casts virtue on herself, granting herself 1 temporary hit point. Confident and calm, Layaali ascends the ladder. She has teen feet of movement left when she is at the base of the ladder, and the ladder is twenty feet, so she is half-way up, then? Is it a sturdy ladder? Does she need a check to climb the ladder?
Drael Kapernos |
Drael growls in frustration as yet another arrow flies astray, but he makes a visible attempt to control himself and focus on his next shot.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Dinketry |
Rafyyk loads Layaali's loaner crossbow and moves to just inside the misty cloud, awaiting a chance to fire.
Load crossbow; Move
Korum's gusto seems to do the trick, as his acid blob catches one of the pugwampi full in the face. Its howls sound out in the chapel as it scrabbles on the ground, clawing at its face. Eventually, the howls trickle to a moan, and then silent.
Layaali, no climb check needed. You are correct in your placement.
GM Dinketry |
Round 8!
Enemy H
The pugwampi hoot and reposition themselves, desperate to defend their territory from the intruders.
Ranged Attack on Korum: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 2 = 111d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3 MISS!
Ranged Attack on Uzma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 231d3 - 4 ⇒ (3) - 4 = -1 CRITICAL THREAT!
Critical Confirm on Uzma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 CONFIRMED! (3 hp dmg)
The arrow pierces Uzma's chest between his ribs, piercing his pleural space. Excruciating pain coupled with a few seconds of agonising dyspnoea wrack the druid as he longingly gazes at the cover of the mist cloud.
Uzma, it is your turn! (I have you at 2hp)
Layaali Twice-Born |
I feel like I just healed Uzma! Haha. But a check shows that was a few turns ago. FYI, I can only see 30 ft. away, so even if there was no mist cloud I wouldn't be able to see you're wounded. Please be vocal for me.
GM Dinketry |
As Uzma already stated that he would be AWOL this week, I’ll post for him.
The wounded druid steps into the mist, calling out for the healer as he goes.
”I am injured badly. Help!”
The pugwampi on the main rafter above grind at Drael and wiggles its ears at the suli.
Drael, I need a Will save, please. And make it twice. Hee hee.
GM Dinketry |
The bowstring on Drael’s weapon snaps near the top bow end with a twang!
Drael, your bow now has the broken condition.
The responsible villain snickers from aloft.
Everyone may act!
Layaali Twice-Born |
Hearing someone call out for help, Layaali descends the ladder again and moves through the cloud of mist towards the outer chapel.
"I can heal the wounded in the outer hall!" Layaali calls out, hoping they all join her soon. She had plenty of healing magic left, but it was not accurate. It wouldn't do to heal the pugwampi along with her new allies.
Layaali double moves towards the outer hall, aiming to get out of range of the pugwampi along with the wounded so she can channel energy on them.
Layaali Twice-Born |
NOTE: If everyone is alright with retreating for a few rounds in the outer hall together, Layaali can heal everyone's wounds with her channel energy, and cast virtue on everyone before we head back into the chapel to rejoin the fight with the pugwampi. Just a thought!
Korum Scratcher |
There are still 3 of these things?!
Korum flings another splash of acid up towards the next Pugwampi, a triumphant roar escaping his lips as he watches his first target fall. After, he moves back through the mist, retreating toward Layaali, his head and shoulders bleeding from the tiny lacerations of small arrows.
"Thrice-damned beasts simply will not die. They seem to have some manner of misfortune magic at their disposal."
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
GM Dinketry |
Rafyyk steps out from the obscuring mist, taking close aim at the snickering pugwampi that recently damaged Drael's bow.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 31d8 ⇒ 3
Ranged Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 31d8 ⇒ 6
Rafyyk's bolt flies straight up into the ceiling.
Drael, it is your turn!
Drael Kapernos |
Drael steps back into the mist and tries for a second to fix the string on his bow before dropping it to the ground to collect later, instead drawing a vial from his belt and looking at it thoughtfully as he asks loudly, Are any of us still up there?
Two questions. 1: would missing the throw due to the double-rolling lead to a complete miss or them taking splash damage? And 2: would the fire do anything to the rafters themselves?
Drael Kapernos |
With these things messing with me, anything's possible. For the other party members, I don't even have the option to throw until next turn but should I throw it and potentially set things on fire up there(which could be good unless we need to get up there for other reasons later), or do we want to stick with more traditional tactics?
Layaali Twice-Born |
"I'm clear!" Layaali replies.
I know I only joined, but it looks from the back-reading I did that you guys have tried a lot of traditional tactics. I think you might as well try hurling the alchemist's fire.
On the topic of tactics, I noticed you guys haven't tried taunting or tricking them into coming down. After Layaali scurries out of range of the pugwampi to heal and buff you guys, are we up for trying something like that before resorting to rushing back in? Perhaps if Layaali loudly proclaims about the many reinforcements she has outside if she only could escape, we might be able to trick them down. Thoughts or other ideas?
Korum Scratcher |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I'm game, that seems like a reasonable plan. Far more reasonable than spending another 6 weeks casting Acid Splash.
Layaali Twice-Born |
Layaali has create water prepared. She could use it to keep the fire from getting too big... Smoke might still get through to outside though.
Drael Kapernos |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Oh, that was my action. I took the move action to pull the vial, and the standard action was used to mess with the bow before dropping it, since it was in character and more importantly allowed time for someone to tell Drael if any of the others were still up there, given that his biggest priority would be not setting any of his comrades on fire by accident.
GM Dinketry |
The remaining pugwampi swirl in the rafters, taking shots at the gang in the mist below. Layaali and Korum retreat back up the stairs and out of the chapel in order to regroup. The suli remains within the cloudy circle, while the druid and the oracle are just outside of it, drawing the pugwampi ire and fire.
Round 9!
Ranged Attack on Rafyyk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3 HIT! (1 hp dmg)
Ranged Attack on Rafyyk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d3 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3 HIT! (1 hp dmg)
Ranged Attack on Uzma: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 151d3 - 4 ⇒ (3) - 4 = -1 HIT! (1 hp dmg)
With unerring accuracy, each of the three arrows sinks into its target. With a howl, Uzma retreats back up the stairs towards Layaali while Rafyyk loads and fires his loaner crossbow before stepping back into the foggy mist.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 151d8 ⇒ 6
Ranged Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 2
The crossbow twangs untrue, the bolt not even reaching the balcony.
All others may act!
Layaali Twice-Born |
Layaali finishes leaving the room and waits for the others to join her. When they get close enough, and she knows the pugwampi are out of reach, she channels energy to heal them.
"Selfless VIldeis, I pray that you take the wounds of these righteous souls upon yourself, that we may continue your work. If we be worthy, heal us, and bless us in our endeavours."
Channel Energy Heals: 1d6 ⇒ 1
She looks to her new comrades, each in turn, and smiles. "I knew he would bless you."
"Come, if we get out of their sight for a moment I can finish healing your wounds and cast a few further spells to empower you."
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
"Blessed be Vildeis," the druid prays in thanks.
He looks at the balcony beyond. "We could set it ablaze, but I am wary of drawing the attention of more creatures."
"I have not the strength," he admits, turning to the others, "but perhaps you could carry blocks from below, and throw them onto the balcony floor in order to bring the pugwampis down?"
Layaali Twice-Born |
"I do not have the strength for hurling blocks, either," Layaali admits in turn.
"Have you tried tricking the pugwampi down?" Layaali whispers. "Perhaps if I boast loudly about how much I can empower you with magic if only we can regroup for a few minutes, they might come down to stop us? Or I could speak of fetching reinforcements, if only I could get away...?"
She looks to the others for advice or suggestions on further tricks, unsure of what they have attempted against the unlucky little gremlins...
Drael Kapernos |
I arrived mid--battle yesterday and they seemed content to allow us to retreat and rest, they were waiting for us when we re-emerged. It may still be valuable for us to retreat, to heal ourselves an repair my bowstring, but I doubt it will get them to follow us. Drael offers what he knows of the situation, looking up at the rafters and wondering what else they can do to get the little creatures down.
What do you guys want to do? We can retreat and come back, but we've done that once and they were waiting for us. The more I think about it, the more using the alchemist's fire feels like a bad plan, but I'm not sure what the best option is given how things have gone so far.
Layaali Twice-Born |
Well, at least let me heal everyone back to full and cast virtue on all of you. While I'm doing that I can lie about all the great magic I'm casting, and if we're lucky my bluff with be so awesome they'll come down to stop me. And if they don't come down, which is likely, I do think we should go back in. At least we'll have full health. If after that we need to retreat again, I'd suggest exploring the rest of the monastery after we rest. We might find some equipment we can use to help out, or maybe earn a level up. At minimum we could probably find a plank or something that we can use to make a temporary bridge across the rafters to them.
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
"You're right. This isn't working," Uzma admits. "We need to bring that structure down, or set it ablaze, or some them out... Or we wait, patient and alert, until the pugwampis are forced to come down for food and water? Are we pressed for time?"
Battered and bleeding, the druid seems little inclined to head back into the fray.
Layaali Twice-Born |
Are we still in initiative? Or can I heal everyone for a bit?
GM Dinketry |
Drael, I'm going to move you out of the room on the map as you've been discussing things with the others who are out of combat. Rafyyk will also retreat, so you can take a pause from initiative, but when you return, we will go straight back to the previous order.
Layaali Twice-Born |
Got it.
Once everyone's aside, Layaali uses some channels to heal everyone. Drael and I are at full, it looks like, but the others I don't see health for? What's everyone's health at?"
Layaali also casts virtue on everyone, granting them 1 temporary hp for 1 minute.
While she is healing everyone, Layaali quietly whispers,
"Have you tried tricking them into coming out?"
Then she loudly lies about her spell casting. "Here, hurry, I have magic that will empower us to defeat them soundly! Spells that deflect arrows, and blessings to grant us flight. If I can cast it on all of you before they follow us down here, we will destroy them in a matter of moments!"
"What? You mean they didn't follow you down last time? Ahahahahaaha! How foolish of them! In that case there is even more magic I can use to empower us! The day will be won shortly!"
Layaali casts her spells and prays as she lies about what she's doing loudly to the pugwampi. as noted she has already shared with the others that's not what she's doing
Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Hmm... Hopefully some of you aid her on that... lol
GM Dinketry |
I'm going to rule that Korum's obscuring mist dissipates while you are buffing everyone, Layaali.
Layaali Twice-Born |
Well that messes that up, I don't speak gnoll. Layaali still does her boasting confidently, anyway. Maybe the tone will help. Do any of us speak gnoll? Translate for me, Korum!
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Cool! Everyone should be at full hp now, with one temp hp.
After Korum hopefully helps trick the pugwampi into coming down, Layaali keeps up fake spell casting for a while, to wait and see if it works...
Korum Scratcher |
Korum shakes his head at Layaali's shouting. "This will not work. They speak only Gnoll. Allow me?"
The surly, weary, annoyed Half-Orc begins barking and braying in the strange language of Gnolls, loud enough to be heard by the Pugwampis in the rafters. "Li bon ke nou gen zouti pou voye nan ti bèt ki viv nan plafon ak pike nan nou ak zam ti! Mwen pa ka tann yo sèvi ak zam sa yo pou netwaye po a nan zo yo epi chwazi dan mwen ak zo kòt yo!"
It is good that we have tools to dispatch of small beasts that live in ceilings and poke at us with tiny weapons! I cannot wait to use these weapons to clean the skin from their bones and pick my teeth with their ribs!
Layaali Twice-Born |
Haha. Awesome. Fingers crossed. May the GM have mercy on us! Haha.
GM Dinketry |
Korum chitters in the guttural tongue of the gnolls into the chapel. Snickers and barks follow from above, along with some speech.
Korum Scratcher |
"Tch." Korum shakes his head, whispering to Layaali, Uzma, Drael, and Rafyyk.
"This is not working. They believe themselves the victors. In truth, they may be right."
Layaali Twice-Born |
"Shall we return to fight, then, or explore the rest of the monastery?" Layaali asks her new comrades. "There may be something that could aid us elsewhere in the building. But, that would also give them time to recover..."
Layaali Twice-Born |
Not me.
Korum Scratcher |
I don't, yet. This is not my best-built wizard :/
