Cranston Mills |
As the three motes of darkness emanate out from the artifact, Cranston mutters, "Oh that is so not good."
Hoping against hope that eliminating the Drow mystic will alleviate the threat, he has Lucille fire at the woman again.
Semi-Auto Pistol Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Semi-Auto Pistol Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Piercing
Cranston's token moved.

Alfin's shot slips between Ranif's legs and strikes the mystic in the ankle, sending shockwaves up her leg. Lucille also fires a shot, but the bullet ricochets off Ranif's dragonglaive and impacts into the wall.

Block 2: Drow Mystic (-25 HP)
Block 3: Alfin (-3 HP), Cranston (-9 HP, Lucille -6 HP)
Block 4: Drow Guards (D4 -5 HP; D5 -3 HP)
Block 5: Kragga (-9 SP), Ziyad (-6 HP)
Kragga's grasping vines will dissipate at the end of her turn. Also this seems to be a good time to remind you guys of soft cover - creatures blocking your line of sight grant your opponents a +4 bonus to AC.
Kragga |
Ziyad, the vines will disappear after my turn so you can enter the room without issue.
Kragga moves closer to the room, knowing her vines will dissipate soon. She casts a spell and conjures a wisp to harry the drow.
GM, please move my icon behind Alfin. I will move and cast wisp ally on the mystic, choosing harrying fire. The first person to attack her each round will get +2 to hit.
GM Jimbles |
Can I do any kind of check on the motes of darkness that just popped out?
That's 28 on a Mysticism check. Nice.
Ziyad sees the darkness rolling and coalescing in the room, but see also sees it - the vestiges of magical energy at the edges, and what they portend. The artifact is somehow spawning small, temporary connections to an outer plane - the kind of connections spellcasters use to summon extraplanar entities. Ziyad can't identify the exact source from the magic alone, but her knowledge of Drow history leads her to believe the most likely candidate is the Abyss - home of demons and their spawn.
Also, is it possible for me to enter the room without risking entanglement?
Yup, you can choose to act after Kragga. You still have your full turn left (the Mysticism check was a free action).
She casts a spell and conjures a wisp to harry the drow.
A green light appears in front of the mystic's face, causing her to squint.
Ranif, you may take your turn.
Ranif Tharystrix |
Able to move more freely now that the vines are no longer impeding his movement, Ranif will advance into the room. As he moves, he tries to longer provide any sort of cover to any of their opponents. Reaching a point to where he can fairly easily attack two opponents, as well as keep an eye on the motes of darkness, he returns to his offensive stance he had taken against the female Drow.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Move Action: move as indicated. Standard Action: Attack the female Drow.
Ziyad |
Ziyad quickly rips off a few electronic bundles the old mining assemblies, jamming them together in a technological bundle glued together with magic. She nimbly strides into the room and places the glowing, drill tipped bundle onto Ranif's weapon...
Supercharge weapon, would have happened before the attack. Adds 4d6 if Ranif is allowed to roll.
She also notes "Oh s##$! They're opening a quasi-dimensional rift! We gotta stop this thing!"
NPC Captain Ross |
"Oh s#!#! They're opening a quasi-dimensional rift! We gotta stop this thing!"
"You heard her! Let's shut this down!"
Ross fires her pistol twice at one of the guards (Drow 4), striking once.

Ziyad runs into the room, just managing to slap her arcane kitbash onto the tip of Ranif's glaive before the dragonkin strides deeper into the room. As Ranif slices, his blade connects with the mystic in a shower of sparks.
Supercharge damage: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 5) = 19 (total damage: 28)
As Ranif's blade connects, the mystic's image shimmers for a moment. A thin magical shield explodes, flashing back at Ranif in a streak of energy.
Ranif's Relfex save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Ranif is caught unawares, and the blast hits him straight in the chest.
Ranif takes 10 force damage.
GM Jimbles |
The mystic, staggered from the heavy blow, stumbles backwards against the wall (guarded step). Raising a shaky hand, she projects a jet-black disk of pure force at the intruders.

Forcedisk attack vs. Ross: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
Forcedisk Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
The forcedisk flies about the room, striking multiple targets.
Ranif takes 13 damage, Ziyad & Ross take 5 damage, and Lucille takes 7 damage.
Meanwhile, three tiny demons are summoned into the chamber. Looking like miniature, emaciated humanoids with bat-like wings, they waste no time in diving into the fray.
Demon 2's Attack vs. Ranif: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Ranif quickly swings in reaction, striking one of the demons (2), which disappears in a puff of smoke. Another demon (3) attempts to bite the dragonkin, but can't pierce his armor. The third (1) flies about the room.

Lucille's shot connects, sending a spray of black bile spattering across the floor. The flying demon seems significantly injured, but maintains its form.
Alfin fires a shot off at the mystic, but she sees him coming and ducks out of the way.
Miss vs. EAC 15.
Drow 5's Attack vs. Ranif: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Taclash Damage (S): 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Hit vs. KAC 19.
One of the drow guards (4) fires at Ziyad, but aims wide and lasers the wall. The other guard (5) draws a taclash from his belt and strikes out at the imposing dragonkin, cutting through his thick armor at a seam.
Ranif takes 4 slashing damage.

Kragga |
Crossbolter: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Kragga reloads and fires another bolt that doesn't come close to hitting her target.
GM Jimbles |
As Ziyad jogs across the room, the tiny demon lunges out but comes up short (that good ol' reach of 0).
The mystic reacts quickly, but Ziyad's arcane fire finds the gashes and punctures in her armor, burning her from the inside out. With a choking gurgle, she collapses facedown on the floor.
The dark artifact, swirling with malice, seems unaffected.
Ranif Tharystrix |
Seeing the Drow mystic fall to the ground, Ranif will turn towards the other enemies. Forcing his pain-wracked body to move, he steps away from the nearest Drow and annoying small demon. Looking between the two opponents, he swings his blade down upon the Drow.

GM Jimbles |
Question, the word "artifact" is being used for this device, and the Identify spell (which I could cast from my spell cache) specifically does not include artifacts. Just wondering what Ziyad would think, ie if she would really consider it an artifact or what.
Oh, good question. The item in question is not an "Artifact" as per the rules; the spell identify would work as it would for any typical magic item.
Kragga |
Mysticism: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
"It's a bloody planar rift. The longer it's open, the more powerful the fiends that will come through!" Kragga snarls. "I can try to close it if Ranif doesn't die on us!"
GM, could I use Mysticism to disable the portal as if it were a magical trap?
GM Jimbles |
GM, could I use Mysticism to disable the portal as if it were a magical trap?
You can certainly try. With such a high Mysticism check, Kragga intuits that she would need to touch the device to manipulate it.
Alflin |
Alflin maintains his cover with the barrels and takes a shot at the drow guard near Ranif, trying to take the pressure off the injured dragonkin.
Stealth Trick Attack: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37

D5's attack with taclash vs. Ranif: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
One of the remaining drow (4) squeezes off two shots in response to Lucille's harassment, but he can't seem to pin the drone down and misses both shots. The other drow closes with Ranif (guarded step) and tries to strike again with his taclash, but the dragonkin casually swats the whip away.

Kragga runs into the room, moving towards the abyssal portal. She pauses briefly beside Ranif, chanting and calling upon the last of her mystical magic to heal the dragonkin.
Mystic Cure: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
I can't reach the portal in a single move, so I'll have to move next turn and try to disarm it.
Ziyad |
Putting her back to the barrels between her and the other drow, Ziyad pulls out her AI cube, Select "Bring up the cache, deep scan! We need a way to shut this down!" she shouts into it as divination magics start to, from her eyes, trace the auras surrounding the black vortex, and she hears astral voices whispering the secrets of the multiverse...

GM Jimbles |
As Kragga heals some of Ranif's wounds, Ziyad delves deep into the essence of the magical stone embedded in the asteroid wall.
You know everything. Effectively, the device can be awakened as a standard action and a mysticism check. Once awakened, it will summon hordes of progressively more powerful demons until it is shut down (with a Mysticism check that can be aided) or hit with an overwhelming amount of holy damage. Any attempts to manipulate the device require you to be within 5 feet.

GM Jimbles |
Ranif swings his glaive, cleaving the demon into a puff of abyssal energy. On the backswing, Ranif strikes the drow, taking his head clean off.
As the fight continues, the dark device spews forth another trio of demons - this batch larger than the last.
Bite Damage (P): 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Hit vs. KAC 16.
The first (Demon 4) strikes out against Ziyad, sinking its teeth into the technomancer's shoulder. The other two close on Ranif and Kragga.

GM Jimbles |
Bite Damage (P): 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Hit vs. KAC 16.
As Kragga runs towards the device, the nearest demon lashes out, tearing into her shoulder with jagged teeth (6 piercing damage). As Ziyad highlights the magical energies, Kragga manipulates them, calling upon the powers of her god the quell the demon hoards. With a shuddering reverberation, the darkness in the device fades from a perfectly black void to a rusty, translucent crimson.

Question just for laughs, now that its deactivated is it possible to pick up the device?
It's about the size and approximate shape of a bowling ball, and looks like it might be heavy, but not so heavy that you couldn't pick it up. It is, however, apparently wedged into the rock of the asteroid.
NPC Captain Ross |
"Whatever you did, that seems good! Let's wrap this up and get the hell outta here!" Captain Ross fires off another pair of shots at the last Drow, punctuating her words. Unfortunately, she can't hit a damn thing.
