Mort's arm snaps the birdman's neck. It slumps to the ground, wand rolling away with the same momentum the birdman would have continued enjoying, until the sudden lurch to a stop.

Without even batting a singed eyelash, Mortimer uses the forward momentum of his outstretched arm to propel him forward five feet. He tries to grab the firestarter about the head and neck.

The firestarter collapses, the overwhelming numbers finally finishing it off. After 22 rounds, we are finally out of initiative... for now...

Light from Ascaria, Solrisa, Raella and Mortimer allows all to see the way forward, and the fading corridors behind. For the fire's burn on everyone's eyes, and the smell of something similar to roasted hen, it's difficult to keep one's bearings.

Ascaria lights up a little as Mort's injuries are shared.*

Then, as the final creature falls, Ascaria rushes to fill the void and channels one more time in haste.

Seeing that no further harm begins to descend on the party, he goes around with the wand of cure light wounds to top everyone off. (As usual, heal what you need and I’ll track the charges.)

As he goes around he says, ”Boy those things were tough! Can somebody gather up the loot so I can check it? Sol, don’t go too far away, I want to try and heal your deeper injuries as well before we continue, if we have time.”

* Mort heals 5hp of damage thanks to Ascaria.

"Oh, okay, Ascaria!" Sol says, moving closer to the gnome. Though she tries to wait patienctly, her eyes look around for another birdman. She occasionally takes a step toward what she thinks might be a foe, but mostly stays near Ascaria.

"Rae! Did you see!? I got a lot of them! Did you!?!" Sol cheers when she sees her sister again.

As Rae drains the last of the charges from their first wand, Ascaria brings out the new one and applies it once as well.

"Anybody else?"

When he’s done, he turns to Sol. ”Now this won’t hurt a bit.” He starts massaging her as he did Mort, and casting Lesser Restoration. He has trouble with her shoulders, as he did with Mort, but he climbs up there as best he can, using the various bits of armor for purchase.

He kneads, he folds, he rubs. Assuming he finishes…

He looks to the southwest T-intersection on the other side of Solrisa.
Which exit might they have lied about?

He looks down the passage past Tynan directly to his east.
Why is there only one of me? I should have clones.

Considering this last thought for a few seconds, he shudders, shakes his head, and falls in line just east of Raella to take up guard duty on the East passage.
... this town isn't big enough to deal with more than one of me anyway...

He waits until the gnome is finished and everyone is ready before pressing on in the direction the wand wielding birdbrain attempted to flee.

As soon as Everyone is ready to go, Mortimer glances down the Eastern Hall. He points to Tynan, then his ear, then down the eastern hall. He bolts up the Northern hallway past Tynan and listens for activity to the south and east.

For your first pass, it appears that the corridors circle back as you may proceed around the bend. For the secret doors that seem to be everywhere, you don't recognize any of the telltale signs of their presence through this branch. Perhaps with a more thorough search...?

"This just seems to wrap around," he says, looking down the eastern corridor noting that it goes south.
"There's got to be more secret passages around here. Does anyone see anything? Maybe they're more well hidden around here..."

Ascaria brings a few items to the group as he looks them over.

"We have some more alchemy fires, four to be exact. Who wants 'em?" He holds them up to Tynan first.

He takes a look at the wand which Mort pointed out.

Feeling better and seeing Ascaria almost ready to move, Sol recommences the bird hunt. She moves to the north and west, her elven eyes casting about for more birds.

"Miss!? Miss? Send more birds!" Sol birdcalls cheerfully enjoying the game.

Her voice fades off as she looks around. But an owlbear wouldn't mind it too much, at least not a baby one.

Mortimer starts to look over the north wall of the bottleneck with a fine toothcomb, but finds it to be a solid aspect of a very well-constructed wall.

Tynan:

Nice perception!
As you make your way through the bottleneck, and see Solrisa rounding the bend, the light from her shield reflects off the north wall oddly enough that you're pretty sure a secret door lies in wait.

Watching Sol as she explores the northern loop, something catches his eye.

Tynan motions to Mort and the rest. "This way... I think I spotted something." Moving to the north wall, Tynan begins searching for a triggering mechanism. After several moments, he spots a trigger plate just to the right of where he believes a hidden door is.

"Ready yourselves." He pauses, waiting to press the plate until everyone has gathered near the door.

At the mention of "owlbear", Mortimer briefly recalls his time with Feathers.

That was at least ... lucrative. If there is one down here, I'm hoping it is another baby. Or Feathers. I wonder if It remembers me at all?

"Good eye, Tynan! Depending on where this leads, I wonder if you could look on the other side at some point," he gestures toward the other side of the eastern wall. "This looking around thing doesn't suit me so well."

Mort has moved on the map.

He glances at the very excited Solrisa -- only a glance.

That armor doesn't look like it fits quite right on her either. I wonder if she's comfortable in it. It could look better too -- maybe the shine toned down a bit? It isn't as if her innate radiance really needs any external enhancements.

A barely audible hiss of the door's mechanism can be heard, as the secret door in the northern face of this apparent maze opens to Tynan's prodding.

A light wafting smell of putrefaction hits your noses in light succession, front to back. Down the narrow hallway extending to the north, your light falls upon a simple wooden door. Aside from the noises of the party, all is quiet.

"Well, damn. So much for flowers. Remember the observatory?"
I'm not looking forward to this. That reek takes forever to wash out.

"Hey Tynan, did you want all four of those Alchy Fires, or can I have one?"

Mortimer takes two of the Alchy Fires as Tynan offers them, but will share if someone else needs one.

While he waits, Mortimer packs his loaded crossbow and carries an Alchy Fire in each hand.

Ascaria holds his nose a moment, but when that doesn't really help (and gets in the way) he gives up. He tries taking a deep breath - hoping to get instantly used to it - and finds that was a mistake too.

In the end he frowns, and moves up behind the group. He refreshes the light on his hatband just in case, and makes ready for anything.

Pillette regards the others and their obvious eagerness to move further into the structure, so steps between everyone to gain the door. She unfurls a small set of tools, and begins her intricate work. Something in her demeanor stiffens, and she halts for a moment, pulling out a set of goggles, and putting them to use on studying the door's lock. A light click moments later, and the halfling brushes her knees, and returns her tools to the fold.

She nods silently to the others, indicating that the door is now unlocked.

Beyond Tynan lies a slightly wider chamber, roughly ten feet wide. This passage is broken up by a series of slender, marble columns that run down its center. Strange patterns of wispy green veins writhe and undulate within the stone. The floor here consists of square, bonewhite tiles that measure about a foot across. The walls are made of a dull gray marble covered with strange, circular bulges in an irregular pattern.

Across from this doorway, and a little to the left, there is a closed door. Various bulges along the walls bear continual green light, providing constant illumination for all. Aside from the sickly glow upon each of your faces, it almost feels inviting.

Perception 21, Tynan:

Beyond the only door you can see from this doorway, there is the faintest whispering, or possibly muttering.

Ascaria admires the green color, It’s not like you see this every day. I wonder what it is? Animal? Vegetable? Mineral? Magic? Are we inside a living thing? This is so cool!

He grips his cure light wounds wand and considers his spell selection as he moves up quietly. At one point he'll stop and rub the green bits in the stone, trying to ascertain what it is.

Rae moves with the others, cursing the whole way. "Knots and snarls, are we gonna be down here forever? Come out already so we can kill you proper."

Nose still turned up in disgust Mortimer whispers,"Are you crazy? That's like stepping into Hell's Birth Canal..."

He shrugs in resignation as the others move forward, and falls into line toward the front.

Sadly, his knee cracks loudly and echos a bit in the corridor on his approach to the new room. His eyes widen in surprise at the noise and he shrugs -- this time apologetically -- at Tynan as he enters the room. He keeps watch toward the east and awaits for Pillette or someone else with the appropriate skills to check out the door.

The symbols, at first speaking to you in that part of your brain that processes the written language into the universal conceptual meanings, suddenly try to force themselves, psychically, through your mind to deeper, untapped places. By sheer will alone do you stop them, but you're left with the overwhelming sense that great, ancient power lies behind the glyphs. The untrained mind would likely shatter under its alien will.

Almost in response to Raella's baiting words, a spectral creature slips through the wall next to Pillette and Mortimer. It chitters to itself, a sorrowful groan that marbles its mutter in louder moments. Everyone needs to make a Will Save DC 15, or become Fascinated for 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 rounds.

The creature newly arrived is an Allip, pathetic undead creature resulting from a suicide of someone driven to it by madness.
