GM Karma, I assume the mephit moved 5' up and back on his first square moved? If he went straight up, I still get an AoO, since only the first square moved out of is protected.

Faustus: The mephit moved 3d-diagonally back and up (ascending in 45 degree angle), so there shouldn't be AoO.

So, to explain the situation shortly: You successful meddling with the portals removed power levels from the portals. Once Jethzerai activated them, they gain a new charge at the end of each round. And once a portal has enough charges, it starts to pour out lava.

"You cursed pointy-ears!" Jethzerai screams, the cold still stinging its skin. "I'll make you pay for that!" The salamander shouts again words of magic, and then appears to be screaming, but no one except Finarin hears anything.
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Finarin takes 4 damage, and is dazed. DC 15 fort save to halve the damage and negate the daze effect

Then Jethzerai uses his jetpack to move him away from the dangerous elf, gaining altitude at the same time. Now at 45ft

Having to wait a round for these makes them tough to use with any reliability - but we need to come up with something to stop these things from spilling out lava, or we are all going to be roasted!

Is it the same rules as before for deactivating the portals earlier or do we have to destroy them another way? Ibid knowledge?

And the previous activities for deactivating won't work since they took several minutes, and portals are now powering up one charge per round. So you'll have to find out other ways of disabling them. Destroying might do something to them...

Sheathing his scimitar (Move action), he steps closer drawing his long bow (5ft step). Whispering arcane words, transferring some of his energies into his bow, the supple yew wood becomes trimmed in blue runes that scribble and disappear along the curved edges. (swift - spend Arcane Pool point to make it +1, icy). Taking careful aim with the natural weapon of the elves, Finarnin loosens the string as the arrow hisses through the air towards the salamander.

The halfling rolls away from the damaged portal, gritting his teeth as the energies roll over him painfully. He gets to his feet, still singing his inspiring song as he lets loose a sling stone at Jethzerai.

The adventurers release a volley of missiles towards the flying salamander. While accurate, Miro's slingshot and Finarin's arrow glance off harmlessly against Jethzerai's hard skin. But learning from his unsuccessful previous shot, Ibid manages to pierce the salamanders defences, and the arrow sinks deep into its flesh.

The wounded memphit flaps it's wings and flies closer to the big gate. It looks at the closest Pathfinders in a funny way, and suddenly Cyrus starts feeling very warm, as if his armor is heating up.

Thanks for that reminder! I don't know why I was thinking it was only a level 1...

Cyrus curses at the flying flames, knowing he just isn't close enough to sneak a bolt into a sensitive spot when they are actually paying attention. He switches his crossbow back to his offhand, takes his wakizashi, and sprints towards the portal that Lort is trying to hack apart. With a yell and a quick prayer to Sarenrae, he flies at the thing, having it with his magically hardened blade.

Faustus glares at the mephit, but ultimately it did nothing to him. Therefore, he turns his look to the salamander flying overhead, and decides to bring it down. 'Maybe Cyrus can turn the portals off when we get the a#+##++ down.'

Apparently Lort had damaged the portal quite heavily, since Cyrus small cut is enough to cut off the power altogether. All the lights in the portal shut down, and the connection to Plane of Fire closes. As a result, a power spike burns off some wiring nearby, and lot more power is directed to the other portals. Portals 3 and 4 establish the connection to Plane of Fire, and lava starts pouring out, just like the first portal did a while ago. Portals 5 and 6 react in much more violent way, shooting balls of lava around them. Luckily, no one is nearby.

"NO!!! Leave that portal alone!" Jethzerai shouts, horrified. He directs his jetpack to fly closer to Lort and Cyrus, the two responsible to the destruction of the portal. The salamander points a pistol-looking device towards Cyrus, and pulls the trigger. No loud bang is heard, nor smoke escaping the barrel. Instead, just a light blue line traverses through the air, hitting the ninja in the head. Immediately, Cyrus feels cold creeping into his body, and freezing his muscles.

Ibid holds his ground as the molten lava begins to flow through the channels. After briefly smirking at the salamander, Ibid loads another arrow and fires at Jethzerai. The instant the arrow has left his bow, the smile washes from the old man's face as the projectile flies futilely through the air.

Bane adds a +2 Enhancement Bonus to the weapon, so I have always ruled that it does make it magical, much like a Paladin's Sacred Bond can make a weapon magical.

Once again the elf lines the outsider up in his sights. Steadying his breath, the pulls the arrow to his cheek and slowly releases the magical arrow.

@Finarin: I feel you. Amaranti had pretty lousy rolls last adventure... Also, creatures with fly speed retain their DEX bonus. At least I couldn't find any rule that they didn't. Forgot to move Jethz. last time, now in correct position.

Finarin and Ibid find the fast-moving salamander a hard target, and their arrows fail to hit him. The portal doesn't try to dodge, and Lort hits. The portal is battered, but remains functional.

Ok, this could be a total waste of actions, but lets see if this can help...

Cyrus leaps up to the control panel, weilding his shabby e-pick. He looks for a place he might be able to affect the power surging to the portals, hoping there is another way to shut this process down. He knows his companions are more than capable of killing the fiery creatures.

Acro or climb check to mount platform: 1d20 ⇒ 3 acrobatics is +16, climb is +6, not sure what the relevant check would be to not have to go around and take the stairs.

Disable Device, if possible, to reduce or cutoff power supply to the portals: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22

Noticing that his attack seemed to have little effect, Miro decides to go to the control panel to help Cyrus.

Cyrus leaps to the raised platform, and starts looking for any method to shut down the portals. Just as he suspected, the console can be used to shut down the portals - he just needs some time operating the controls.

This requires two consecutive full-round actions while adjacent to the console and a successful DC 20 Knowledge (engineering) or DC 25 Disable Device check

The small portals seem to be drawing more energy. Two of the portals shoot balls of plasma around them, and one of the lava balls explode near Ibid, splashing him with burning hot lava. The lava flow from the portals has now reached the pool beneath the large gate, which starts drawing power from the heat. Small ripples appear on the gate's surface, but luckily it seems to be far from functional yet.

To make things worse, it is not just lava that comes out of the portals. A small creature of pure fire exits portal #5, and immediately moves to attack Lort.

Was the fire elemental damage physical or fire related? Just checking. I'll take 4 more hp off if it's physical, otherwise resist fire to the rescue!

Miro, your shortsword may even do the trick..." The brash, overconfident half-orc then strides around and past the fire elemental to the fourth portal (drawing an AoO from that movement for sure).

The old man writhes as the globs molten fluid touch his skin and instantly sear his nerve endings closed. Within a split second the waves of pain fade, and leave only a numbing weakness in their wake. Ibid knows the lava is so hot that his skin and body is greatly damaged, even when only barely contacted, but that the extent of the burns cannot be registered by his brain through the shock.

As the aroma of seared flesh reaches his nostrils he feels a tingling sensation at the base of his neck and his knees go shaky while the old man's mind recalls his latent fear of fire.

@Lort: The damage you took from the elemental is physical. I really don’t know if you can use cleave on objects, but since I doubt Lort has had many chances to cleave moving opponents, feel free to use it here.

@Faustus: BTW, you are standing in the pool which is filling up with lava. Last round you had a non-used 5ft step, would you want to take it? Or rather stand there and look badass with your fire resistance? ;)

Lort rushes past the small fire elemental, who tries to pummel the half-orc without effect. Another portal gets to taste the greatsword, and again a great amount of circuitry and wires is revealed after the explosion of fire and lightning.

Elsewhere the archers are trying to finish the flying salamander, but only Finarin manages to keep his aim on the fast-flying creature. The frosty arrow sinks into Jethzerai, and the ice in the weapon seems to burn him far more than it should.

The portals keep their lava flow steady, but no new creatures emerge from the portals. The lone fire elemental tries to protects the portals, and keeps up its assault on Lort. The small creature of fire manages again to slam some bruises to the half-orc, and the flames of the elemental spreads and keep burning on Lort. However, his divine magic protects him from the deadly flames.

Lort grimaces as the elemental and then the magical bolt slam into him, "Ha! I'll get these portal closed before you get that panel disabled, Cyrus..." then he looks upwards, "And long before those missiles have any effect, you evil fiery f*cker! They kinda tickle! So does your friend here."

Lort stands between the two portals and cleaves through one and then the other.

The old man loads another arrow and draws back, looking down the length of the missle at the hovering salamander. His hand is still shaking and his weathered muscles are barely able to hold tension on the string, causing his aim to again go awry.

Shrugging, seeing that Cyrus seems to have things in order over at the control panel, Miro rushes back towards the combat, short sword flashing at the fire elemental in his brave charge, his song still roaring strong.

There is no escaping from the inquisitor of Asmodeus. Steadily he aims a shot, and presses the trigger. Jethzerai's magical protection does him no good, and bolt pierces the salamander's throat. Without the pilot to fly it, the jetpack cuts off the power. The stream of air ceases and Jethzerai drops down like a rock. Just before he hits the floor, the salamander's belt flashes and some invisible force softens his fall.

Falling damage: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 4) = 21

Perhaps it is best for the salamander that he is not witnessing his complete defeat - One mighty strike from Lort destroys two portals at the same time, and soon after Cyrus manages to complete a shutdown procedure from the console, resulting in powering down of one of the portals.

With Jethzerai down, Finarin and Ibid look for new targets, but are unable to hit the elemental or the fire memphit. Miro, on the other hand makes a brave charge towards the small fire elemental, making a decent cut on the fiery body.

The elemental turns to Miro, counterattacking with its flames.
Elemental slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The fire memphit looks around it. It looks like he is not exactly in the winning side, but there's no escape either. With a shrug, it inhales deep and the breathes out long gout of flames at Faustus.
Fire breath damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1 not going past fire resistance, I assume?

Portal #6 spawning, 30%: 1d100 ⇒ 68

Next: everyone! Two enemies remaining, and one portal still active. The big gate has now 9 charges.

With a quick stride to bring him closer to the elemental, right past the broken Salamander's body, Lort brings his large blade down in a powerful arc upon the creature born of living flame.
