"Vazio, Eizzach and me have decided to do a little bit of scouting around. Whoever wants to join us would be most welcomed, of course, but I think it would be unwise to leave our camp undefended. A few of you might stay behind, set up some defenses, gather some food... Even having someone lifting our spirits up a bit wouldn't necessarily be such a terrible idea, don't you think, Master Gelik?"

Lalaru Thalassa wrote:
Groggily raising her head to notice the others up and milling about the Merfolk disdainfully grunts before plopping back down.

"Wake up, princess" Yani jokingly whispers in Lalaru's ear "Your bath is ready, the masseuse is waiting for you, the finest Iobarian caviar has been served for breakfast and the king has asked for your services today." She waits a while for consciousness to fully return to the Merfolk lady, and then she says "Well, no, not really. We're still stranded on a deserted island, and we need every able body up on his feet..."

"Metaphorically speaking, you know", she adds, after a short moment of embarrassment.

As Yani's words land on her ears she once more tries to ride and stretch, a blissful smile she's much more accustomed to wearing adorning her face as her eyes slowly adjust to lighted waking world. Greeted by the same scene she saw before she drifted off to sleep last night she turns towards Yani with narrowed eyes and pouted lips. "That was cruel and unusual..."

"That's because I'm a cruel and unusual person" Yani tries to quip. She makes a move as to turn away, but catching a glimpse of Lalaru's expression she stops and sighs "No, I'm really not, actually. I just figured that was the quickest way to get through to your sleepy self. I apologize if it turned out cruel - having spent most of my years training all by myself under an arena, I've never really had a way with people, so to say"

"On a less depressing note, Eizzach, Vazio and me are putting up a little scouting party. Care to join?"

Her face quickly shifts from annoyance to understanding to a smile as Yani speaks. "Exploring? You bet!" as opposed to the lethargy she previously displayed she happily collects her gear before sliding up to Yani. "So where to?"

Nichelle was not a morning person by choice. Then again, she was not exactly an afternoon person, either. However, with the amount of chatter that was going on in camp about now, she could not remain blissfully asleep-- oh, she could remain asleep, but the "blissful" part was the main focus-- so she sat up, careful not to bump her portable lab. She had developed a habit of sleeping next to it, just in case something was being worked on that needed regular tending. The fitful bubbling was something that sent her right to sleep.

Groaning, she sat up and rubbed her eyes, pretty nonplussed by the view. There was definitely a few seconds of non-comprehension before some recognition began to dawn in her expression. Smacking her lips, she made a distasteful face, and managed something near her voice that lacked most of its usual cheer.. A "croak" would be a better term. "Oh Starsong, I have gold-- I think-- and favors for any of you magic-y types that can cast that 'cleans everything' spell, starting with me." Groaning, she stood half-heartedly, then in a sleepy look of mischief, she glanced over to see if Sasha was still unaware of the world.

Somehow, she reined in the impulse, and shook her head, looking around to see if anyone was taking her up on her solicitation. A few sleepy blinks, and she yawned, following it with a deadpan look. "..~aaah.. I'm not kidding.. Anyone?" She was blatantly switching her gaze between the two gnomes.

Gelik looks to Yanistah, I can definitely spend my day doing that.

One by one Ishirou, Jask, Sasha and Aerys each follow suit, volunteering to help in some way--though Ishirou seems somehow quieter than usual. Jask approaches Yanistah looking at the small cut remaining, May I? As she nods her assent, he channels a spell into healing her.

I'm not going to bother rolling, it's only one point.

Gelik stands, his clothes already clean and tidy and walks over to Nichelle, Seeing as how gold won't do either of us much good in the next little while, I'll take a favor. He begins to concentrate, dirt falling off of Nichelle's clothes as he does, Glad to see someone sees the value of clean presentable clothing. He rubs his hands together--the ink stains still visible--and continues to work.

Xabala:
You know that viper nettle usually grows in moist places, usually by a river or something similar. As for what else might help, you can think of nothing natural that would be effective for this.

He removes and unwraps a ration bar from his pack--some odd concoction that looks halfway between shortbread and granola without being either--breaks off a piece, and and offers it up to the others while chewing his own.

"Fancy a bit of breakfast before we move out? I've only got a week's worth of this stuff, so we might want to conserve most of it if our foraging turns up empty. Still, this'll get you through the sunrise at least."

"Good thinking. On top of that, following a river would allow us to carve our way inland without having to struggle through the jungle's thick undergrowth" Yanistah meditatively replies to the dusky half-elven woman.

A short while later, Yanistah approaches Aerys Mavato to discuss some final details just before departing. "So - it looks like we're going to leave the camp in the hands of you people. Aerys, can we trust you to keep an eye on any possible threat that might wander nearby? You might want to ask Ishirou to help you setting up some defenses - though he looked a bit dejected the last time I saw him. And rest assured, with Xabala's knowledge of medicinal herbs, we should have no trouble identifying those berries you were talking about."

"Those might come in handy, should we happen to find a crevice or a chasm blocking our way" Yanistah says as she picks up the grappling hook and the rope, winding it up around her shoulder.

"Or stairs." she halfheartedly jokes as Yani procures the grappling hook.

The others in the camp bid you farewell with assurances that everything will be taken care of in the camp. Aerys has a small grateful smile for the group as they go.

You travel along the bluffs that overhang the beach. After close to an hour of traveling, you reach a spot where you can see another ship. It's on a smaller island, about half a mile from the shore. It looks old and battered, it's rigging leaning every which way, boards splintered.

DC 20 Survival:
There have been several small bones, scratches on trees and other markings that have increased with frequency the last bit of the journey. It seems there may be a predator living within about a half mile. Probably some sort of flying creature.

Map updated. The little black dots indicate your traveled path.

I certainly know I missed them, for instance she angrily reflects, a vague frown betraying her frustration at her own ineptitude. Yani's going to take a -4 penalty to Survival checks for the next hour due to the Doubt drawback

"Do you think that shipwreck over there might warrant a quick check? Not that I hope to find any food or other perishable goods, I was rather thinking about tools, or even weapons" she says to the rest of the group, but eyeing Lalaru in particular as the only one likely to be able to make it to the island and back.

This island's reputation holds firm. The surrounding reefs definitely have teeth. I'm not sure how we would get over there, but if we find some method of transport, it might be worth a look. There is bound to be something we can salvage off it. But at this point, since the only obvious way over there is to swim, which I will not be doing, I suggest we move on. And we definitely need to keep an eye out for whatever made those marks.

"Aye, definitely," he adds to the halfling's comment. "We should be so fortunate to spot it before it spies us. As for the wreck, you ladies are welcome to swim over and have a look, but I'm afraid that I would just be a liability if I tried to take to the water after you. Maybe you should check it out when there are more able-bodied folk present than Vazio and myself."

On hearing these words, Yani lowers her gaze and blushes "I've... I've never really learned how to swim, actually. I might try, but I don't think I'd make it through those reefs" she hesitantly admits.

By the Warrior's Ring, I now feel little more than a glorified door-kicker

"I was rather suggesting that Lalaru might do a solo reconnaissance: should she meet any foes - such as the creatures that attacked us yesterday - I figured she could easily outswim them. Then again, it's easy for me to make plans when I'm not going to be the one carrying them out" she says in a frustrated voice.

I'm a bit confused: how many of us are actually here, besides obviously Lalaru, Eizzach, Vazio and Yanistah? I took Xabala's statement as an implicit confirmation of her being willing to come with us, but what about Nichelle and Malthu? (by the way, I really hope he's feeling better!)

Clasping her hands in front of her chest she proceeds to up and down in glee, in as much as her lower body will allow her. "Oh, oh, remind me to teach you when we get the chance, you don't know much fun it is to he free of land and drift the waters. And should come easily to you with your well toned body, your musculature and curves are well suited to the waves..." Tracing a line up and down Yani she lets her eyes linger a bit too long on the monk's legs as her mind drills on before she snapped back to the present. "Wait, what were you doing on a boat if you don't know how to swim?"

Wildborn Beast-Bonded Witch 1 | HP 8/8 {effects: none} | AC 12 Tch 12 FF 10 | F +1, R +2, W +4 | Init +4 | low-light vision, perc +2

"I must concur with Vazio and Eizzach. Considering the creatures we had met the last time, swimming may be dangerous, even for one such as Lalaru, should she get surrounded alone out there. Perhaps should we find or build a small boat or raft, then we can search it. From the looks of the thing, it has kept for some time. I expect it can keep for some more."

Everyone is there.

You move on making your way down the coast. After a little bit, you can see a nest, on a ledge of the cliff. It seems empty for now. As you keep going the day continues to get hotter. About a mile later, you find another ship. This one is more accessible, though it's condition is much the same. A climb down the cliff's edge--about 80 feet--would get you down to this ship.

"Scrubbing decks and being on lookout duty, mostly. I'm afraid sailing was a sort of fall-back career for me. Though first mate Devers must have reasoned along similar lines when he accepted me as part of the crew, back in Magnimar" Yani replies with a gentle smile.

Indeed, that would make it an unlikely case of hystorical truth. From an OOC perspective, my total amount of skill ranks forced me to choose between survival and swim, and I followed the Player's Guide's suggestion to pick survival.

EDIT:

Would Lalaru be able to climb down using the rope? Technically by RAW she should have no climb malus - in any case, Yanistah and Malthu should be strong enough to just lower her. And yes, I'm getting a bit carried away with a "Explore all the Things!" Skyrim-like approach to this ;)

...Meanwhile, back at camp...

The concoction was simmering. Nichelle disliked simmering, since that meant that the only thing that could be done was to watch it bubble fitfully, and that meant there was nothing else interesting to do with it until it was done simmering. It might be the same reason that she had not really taken to cooking either, but as with most things that were not immediate things to deal with, she shrugged it off. Still, there had to be something to do other than tending to the simmering liquid, and she realized that she had not quite gotten the measure of the others here at the camp.

Jask was polite and helpful, Gelik she enjoyed conversing with, and Sasha was.. Well, she was friendly to her, but she had her doubts. Aerys seemed prickly to her, and Ishirou was someone she had no idea about. Even thinking hard, she could not remember interacting with him much, if at all while she was on the ship-- for all of the couple of days that she was on the ship.

Maybe it was time that she fixed that.. After all, talking to someone potentially interesting was a whole lot better than just sitting and watching something simmer. It was getting warmer, too. So, she set the concoction aside, and stood, stretching her legs with a smile. It was a determined smile, eminently cheerful, to boot.

She meandered, which is to say that she let herself get distracted by a number of things as she made her way over to where Ishirou was seated in the shade, and graced him with a bright smile. Now that she had actually moved, she noticed that the sand was surprisingly warm, and the day was getting warmer. The nights were better, and while she knew it was not the brightest idea, she wanted to see the waves closer up.

"Umm.. Hi?" her hands behind her back, she fidgeted a little. "I was wondering, I mean, well.. I was kind of curious.." Sighing, she looked a bit uncomfortable. "I haven't really spoken to you-- well, you and Aerys-- and I was wondering if it was okay to talk to you.. Er, I mean, I'm curious about you? I want to know your story, I mean.."*

I was actually wondering that too earlier. Technically, by RAW, Lalaru shouldn't suffer any penalties to Climb or Acrobatics checks - though I'd really see the point should GM Jammin' or even you opt to rule otherwise. We can still have Malthu and his 16 STR lower you (I think we might safely assume he'd be willing to do that even without a direct input from him - one of the necessary evils of PBPs). Provided he's actually here, of course. I've already been proven wrong once in that regard.

With rope and a wall to brace against, I'd say no penalty for climbing down, but getting back up, probably a -2. Without rope, -4. This is mostly because of the strong tail trait. I'm not sure how I'd handle this without that.

With the rope, the strength of those around and a little luck, everyone who tries makes it down the cliff. The tide is coming in, but is still low enough that there is some beach here. The boat had washed up onto the sand, there is a large hole in the side, just below a name written on the boat. Bloody Doll.

"Ooo..." Purring her amazement she'll begin pawing at the little orbs of light that suddenly appeared.

You enter the ship. It seems to be little more than a graveyard. A chest, left open to the air, sits in the hold. Inside are a few pieces of rotted clothing and a single dagger. The dagger is probably the only useful thing you find. There are more scraps and bits of things, as if they were dropped by someone leaving in a hurry. Some of them are recognizable--leather, the blade of a paring knife, an eyepatch--but most are not.

"I haven't really spoken to you-- well, you and Aerys-- and I was wondering if it was okay to...

Ishirou looks at Nichelle, face somber, My story. It's too long. I grew up on a ship. Didn't like it. I left and worked for the Aspis Consortium. Now I don't. He shrugs, turning back to what he has in hand. It seems he is sharpening a stick. After a few moments he turns back. He speaks slowly, as if he was thinking as he spoke, And you? What is your story?

"That's... disappointing" Yani grumbles as she browses through the mostly useless stuff they've found. "Though at least we might count ourselves lucky we haven't stumbled into any threat, either" she adds, her tone instead betraying a small hint of restlessness.

"So what's the plan? Are we going to proceed along the coast? If today's going to be as hot as yesterday, I'd like to find a sheltered place where we could rest a little - possibly before noon"

Xabala mutters some words and passes her hands across her eyes before looking around.

"Agreed. I suggest we press on until noon, then we stop to rest and we make our way back once the hottest hours are behind us"
