Just wanted to let you guys know that wasn't my way of saying IC that I'm quitting. I'm still in it, I just wanted to add a bit more rp to the official beginning of the quest.


Oh I agree entirely with Lissa POV..nice to see reluctant heroes for a change..My Witch is like that she keeps telling folk she is just a barmaid who knows a few tricks, not a hero at all.

So here is somsething that I think might be amusing:

I don't know much about Jade Regent, I've intentionally kept myself in the dark about it but I have been led to believe that later on there is a Ulfen warrior woman who might be a possible romantic option.

I think it would be funny if Ulf works out with Shalelu and Zal goes for the Ulfen. Just funny juxtaposition stuff. If that is at all true/make sense.

There is... Can't think of her name, though. I've thumbed through my books when they come in the mail and checked out the art. So even though I own it, I know only the barest outline of the plot.


I have so many interesting ideas on how to use her too...

I'm gonna stop holding the story up shortly! Hope everyone doesn't mind me trying to play out the relationship that Úlf is trying to establish with Shalelu. It's like...the first chance in eight years of RPing that I've really been given an opportunity to let a character honestly pursue a romance. It's a new experience, and I'm really enjoying it!

Somehow it seems like it's less weird to do a romance here than in RL, too. The only GMs I've ever had are guys, and to try and describe any kind of romantic interaction with a female NPC face-to-face with the male GM who is playing her has always felt a little awkward to me.

I use a method I read about years ago called "bluebooking." Using a spiral bound notebook to write down what your character does and hand it to the GM who writes the NPC's response. It takes a lot longer than talking it out, but it takes away a lot of the awkwardness. It has the bonus effect of leaving a written record of the interaction. It can be done for anything involving PC/NPC interaction, not just romance.

I agree with you on the awkward part, as I'm usually said GM. Go ahead and have your interaction, If Lissa gets to have her inner turmoil (sort of) then Ulf can have some personal RP too!


In many ways the Play by post campaign is the perfect way to deal with these more intimate looks into a character..the problem at the table is not only player GM embarassment but the time factor and these sort of things always get rushed.

Poll for the group, though I can guess what everyone will say: Do we keep the Whispering Shrike wakazashi that big skelly had or sell it? Or even let Ameiko have it, since she knows its' history? In the case of selling it, what will it net us, DM Wellard?

Normally, I'd be inclined to keep it, just in case. However, no one in the group knows how to use it. Ulf is the only one with a reasonable chance to learn anytime soon, and it doesn't seem his style. I briefly considered having Omara dip into fighter for some melee feats, but that would be a long way off if it happened at all. I think we should sell it, or maybe trade it in for something someone can use.

If I remember correctly, all the weapons that come from Minkai would require an EWP for us Inner Sea folk to use properly, which requires a feat dedication I'm probably not gonna be willing to commit.

Depending on how Ameiko feels, my vote will go to either letting her keep it, since it may have some sort of sentimental value to her, or to cash it out.


In it's present condition Whispering Shrike would fetch 1751 Gp at sale.

It strikes me that the easy way for Martial Characters to gain the Weapon Proficiencies is to take a level of Samurai...off course as Westerners you would be restricted to being Ronin.As it is a Cavalier Substitution class fighters are not forbidden to take it..I'm not suggesting this is done now but it might be something worth considering if we ever get to the Tian Xia Chapters where the decent Magical weapons are going to need the EWP's anyway.

Something I am considering using are the Honour rules from Land of the Linnorm Kings..after all you spend a whole chapter there and it seems the ideal time to try them out.

If we don't need the good I vote we keep it for now, someone might need it, get the level or feats or we might meet a prospective ally and it will make a good bribe. I say this only if we aren't hurting for money, which I'm personally or but my needs are modest right ow.

*Whistle* Chee-yowza. That's a truck-load of shinies...though if I recall, Runa has also claimed the hairpin for herself, which will reduce our total by 260 GP. I'm glad you separated the non-magical gear from the magical, because I'm not entirely sure we're going to part with the magical gear at all...it seems like the potions and wand have immediate survival value to the group, which to me far outweighs the gold value.

Ring of Climbing could come in handy just 'cause you never know when you'll need to haul yourself up a mountain. Of course, that's why Úlf carries silk rope and a grappling hook. Take longer to get where you're going of course, but it's better than free climbing...I'll leave it up to the others as to what we do with the Ring. I'm willing to part with Whispering Shrike ,but that's about all I'd wanna get rid of from the magical stuff at first glance. The non-magical stuff I'm ok with just tossing at the nearest merchant.

What does everyone else think?

Regarding the taking a level of Ronin thing, since the weapon I'd likely default to as a two-hander is a Nodachi, and a Ronin doesn't get auto-prof with that, it seems like my best bet is to just take EWP: Nodachi when we get to that point in the campaign. How likely are we to either run across Western weapons or have enough time in one area to get a weapon we brought with us improved? It seems probably not likely at all.

We'll need to reduce our overall reward amount depending on which of the magical gear we sell and which we keep. I think the total he gave us is assuming we convert to gold everything, including the potions.

If we assume that we're selling the ring and Whispering Shrike and keeping our other magic items, and assuming we get half market value for the ring, then that would bring our total to 4314 GP, or a dead-even 719 gold each.

Does that sound right to you, DM Wellard?


The total above only cover the nonmagical stuff and Whispering Shrike..which Ameiko is keeping..she gives you the 750 it is worth but will carry it in the memory of the sacrifice it's bearer made.

it's a Tian thing..

I'm also giving Ameiko the ability to use Tian weapons without having to pay the EWP penalty for reasons which will become readily apparent later on.

I would say we should keep the ring. Incidental use of a ring like that might come up a lot on the road. Look a crazy ridge...someone slip the ring and go have a look. We can always sell it later if we don't find it useful.

Additionally I think we should split the potions up amongst the party members who want them and then split the remainder between myself and Runa. (My lizard brain says healers should carry the excess but given that they are potions I think it best they are split up for ease of access if someone drops.)

I'm not sure but Runa or Lissa might want to take the Identify wand as they are the only ones who can use it.

DM Wellard what is the chance of finding a Mithril Chain Shirt?

I can't use it atm. Maybe once we level up I can take Identify, but it's not one of my spells known right now. I tried to choose spells that Lissa would have picked up while living normal life in a small town. Sadly not many great adventuring spells fit that bill. I figure she'll learn more once she actually begins to adventure more and such spells become more useful in her day-to-day life.

One a completely unrelated note, I got my copy of Jade Regent 6 today, which means only one more month until Skull and Shackles! I only hope that beginning it here on the boards won't disrupt this campaign. I'm really excited about the potentiality to see this through.

Don't have to know identify, just have to be able to know it, which as a summoner you do. As long as you know what spell it is, you can use a wand if your class has the ability to ever cast it. (Which is why groups make Bards into healbots.)

Since I was corrected on our gold total, I vote we keep the ring. An extra +5 Climb as a situational bonus can never be a harmful thing. Who should get it, though? The best climber or the worst? Úlf has a +5 and also is about to have two 50-ft lengths of silk rope and a grappling hook. He could take it and free-climb something, then secure a rope and let the others climb up that way. However you guys wanna do it.


BTW Guys my RoTRL group are headed back to Sandpoint for another reaonably long interlude..I'll give you the link to the thread once it is set up if anyoff you want to do some interaction with them as your five year younger selves.

As to the Potions..the Lesser Restorations are best left in the hands of the healers just now.

Also, Wellard, will I get half market value for trading in the Gaxe and the Scale Mail? Or any trade-in credit at all? If so, I'll just reduce the total spent on the weapon/armor by that much. Assuming that the potions and oils Úlf wanted were in stock at the apothecary, I'm done shopping and ready for the trip to Brinewall. Thanks!

Ah, you're correct. I don't play (or have players who play) spontaneous casters often, so I had forgotten some of the rules on wands with them. I'll take the wand then, in that case.


you can all assume that if you sell mundane equipment or use it as a trade in that you will get the usual 50%..

Agreed on both points there. I'm really eager to see this through, since it's my first PbP ever, but at the same time I'm also really excited to get the Vanara Druid I made in on a S&S campaign.

Would Runa be able to purchase a small caldron? Would this be good enough to brew potions (her next witch skill will be caldron, and her feat will be brew potion..just want to get ready for it!!)


A small Cauldron is good enough..Bottled Solutions will have one in stock.Cauldron is a really useful hex my Carrion Crown witch has it and it basically means i can churn out a healing potion a day on the road and three a day in down time.


As to S&S disrupting this I don';t see why it should..I play in 4 campaigns and run 3 and find time for all of them..
