Darc Jonash |
Craft aid 1d20 ⇒ 6
Darc spends much time moaning to Eretria, in monosyllabic terms. His irritation at the continuing boat building steadily causing increased frustration. He tries but he fails to help, as he labors to keep his interest focused.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
At this point, Rashun's and Xavier's rolls are largely immaterial, only influencing how soon the boat will be done the next day. The boat won't be finished that day, but will be done with only Luntz' roll tomorrow.
That night, Luntz breaks out a few bottles of wine. "Normally I'd hang on to these t' trade, but you deserve something more fer all yer help with the akata."
The night is again uneventful. The next morning, you make your way back to the shipyard, this time with all your gear in hand. Luntz casts a single wood shape spell on the boat to tighten up all the seams, and it's done. He gives you a quick primer in how to sail her, the most important part of which is the injunction to [b]"make for shore if the weather turns sour on yer." You've got a single sail, two pairs of oarlocks and extra oars, and a fishing line or two.

Xavier Longsaddle |
During the previous night, Xavier had bought Eretria the finest flowers he'd been able to find
Survival to find REALLY nice ones1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
She still was angry with him however, upon offering a final apology for his ignorance he spied the chain near where she was sleeping.
Knowledge: Engineering1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Xavier Longsaddle |
Look, I know the flowers are not particularly nice but trust me, the pickings are quite slim here, I spent hours looking. In any case I have resloved to learn a bit about magic to cure my ignorance. I don't mean to undervalue you or your abilities at all, in fact I feel the whole thing rather adds mystery to your beauty. It is something I would very much like to better understand.
Once again, forced to admit his great failing, Xavier tries to excuse himself and leave.
What is it about this beutiful and Frustating woman that puts me ill at ease. 3 weeks ago I would have lost interest and simply slept it off in adrunken episode with a barmaid and forgotten her...
Eretria Whitethorne |
Persistent fellow... I'll give him that.
"Learning about magic might help you do better with stratigy against enemy casters better as well, I would have thought though... in our travels you would notice I have not once pulled out a book for my spells is all." She offers Xavier a polite smile with her response.
Not having a bar with said barmaids might have some part in that :P
Sami Johoro |
Sami gives Luntz's hand a heary shake, his grin wide. Luntz, we can't thank you enough for the assistance; we'll make sure to put the craft to good use, don't doubt that. I hate to leave you by yourself here and would like to tell you that we'll return but, well, our path is not a simple one. Sure you'll be alright?
Sami boards as he speaks, stowing away his very limited amount of gear, then testing the feel of sails and rigging.
Darc Jonash |
Bored with boat building, Darc looks for excitement elsewhere. "We go back to evil hole?" he asks. "We ignorant of place." he seems to plead. "Who come?"
Sami Johoro |
Sami grins. Splendid. Let's get on our way, then, if everyone's ready. He looks at his fellows before proceeding, then begins fiddling with the sails to learn how they work, waiting for the others to climb aboard.
Darc Jonash |
Darc shrugs, though he seems reluctant to enter the boat. "Test boat, who know sail?" he looks around at each, except Eretria, looking for an answer. "Eretria, she no like sail. Must test safe."
Sami Johoro |
Sami shrugs and looks about at the others. You're right of course, Darc. We should take it for a short ride to get accistomed to its controls. Luntz, would you mind takinf a few of us on a quick trip and teach us some of the finer points of sailing this boat? No more than an hour or so would be necessary, I'm sure.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
"Happy to oblige." He runs you through some basic operations with the boat. It doesn't have much of a keel, so it's easier to navigate in shallow water, but that means it can't really tack against the wind. If the wind isn't largely at your back, you're better off furling the sail and rowing. If the weather gets bad, you're better off not trying to sail in it. Given the navigability of the Sellen, it'll take some really bad rolls for you to get into trouble, although mediocre rolls could lose you some time.
Xavier Longsaddle |
Xavier is keen to learn to operate the boat, but his protective instincts kick in at Darc's suggestion he stay with Eretria, alone. He moves beside her and keeps his voice low, I won't leave you with him, I don't trust him yet.
He'll stand beside her, silent but clearly not moving. He will leave her if she directly asks but would rather she come on the boat or simply let Rashun and Sami learn to sail.
Rashun Tollinger |
Good news: My internet is back to working consistently.
Bad news: I won't be home that long today.
After I inform my other pbp groups of the internet issue. I will get caught and made an actual post if I have something relevant to say.
PS:The above is a standard issue apology so I can copy an paste to all the PBP's I am in.
PS2:Is it time for my next Fort save yet?
Sami Johoro |
Sami listens intently throughout the instruction, his interest piqued at learning a new craft, particularly one that could mean the life or death of him and his companions. He gives Luntz a hearty handshake at the end of it, as he helps to guide the ship back in to shore. It's been a pleasure, Luntz. I hope that you find a measure of peace in these dark times. I hope we can stop through again, but I know not where this path will take us.. He looks to the others. All aboard then, everyone; I'm afraid we could be behind schedule anyway.
Guess I can't consider profession sailor trained now, can I?
Xavier Longsaddle |
Personally, I'm hoping knowledge: survival will help me pick appropiate weather for our trip. I'll get Sami to teach me what Lutz showed him as we go. He really was interested but he won't leave a companion alone with Darc yet.
Eretria Whitethorne |
I want to say sorry ahead of time but I don't know how often my posts will be the next few days... the house I was in caught fire and I basically lost everything I owned except my computer which was salvaged after a lot of cleaning
Eretria doesn't mind either one of them being present while she silently waits for the men to practice on the boat, she hoped it would be enough for them to fair well on the trip.
Darc Jonash |
Best of luck recovering from the fire, sounds pretty devastating. Hope you and yours are all well and you can sort things out as quickly as possible. Don't worry about the game.
Xavier Longsaddle |
Xavier looks back, not wanting to offend the half orc (he did agree to give him a chance after all) he states, Like boats fine, like standing with friends better. He hopes that deflection satisfies the Barbarian. They needed to get along if this was going to work.
Darc Jonash |
"umph" escapes from Darc's mouth and a confused look as his dark left eyebrow raises. "All friends, yes." With a nod at the young human, he turns his attention back to Luntz's boat and his instructions. "Sami no weapon now called Sami boatmaster" he laughs nervously, casting a little glance at Eretria.
Sami Johoro |
Sami smiles and claps Darc on the arm as the half-orc boards. Let's hope so, shall we? Otherwise, this could be quite a short trip! Sami seems completely oblivious to the fact that any others may fear the watery depths.
Xavier Longsaddle |
Xavier allows Eretria to board ahead of him, ever the gentleman, (and not minding the view at all), then hops aboard after, careful not to touch any controls until Sammy can pass on wjat he learned. He keeps his armor on. He was a good swimmer and his magical breastplate did not hamper him much at all.
DM Carbide - Dark Road |
There isn't much wind right now, so you end up rowing away from the shipyard and up the mouth of the river. It's slow, but with four fairly strong people and one for the tiller, it's easier than walking. By the time night falls, you've left the city behind and are up into the edges of what used to be the Verduran Forest. There are large patches of second-growth forest, but nothing like it used to be.
This might be a good time for Eretria to look at that chain again.
Xavier Longsaddle |
That night in camp, between watches and with little.to do, Xavier spots Eretria looking at the chain again.
Is there something about that you know? Or is it the mystery that holds you?
He examines the chain again,
Knowledge: Engineering1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
A fine chain, to be sure
Darc Jonash |
After the tense white knuckle ride in the boat, Darc found the rowing helped a bit, giving his mind something to concentrate on. His hands ache with the tension applied through his developed muscles, as they gripped the oars more tightly than usual.
Once on dry land again, his mood visibly lightens, well his eyes seem to be brighter anyway and a smile appears on his visage. He looks around for a vantage point from which to keep guard and identify from where any dangerous predator might attack. "Hunt food?" Darc asks the others, he doesn't venture far, trying to keep in sight all the time, seeking to find
As they prepare the food for the evening feast, Darc prays over the food, asking for health to be provided by the gifts on offer, though the quiet prayer is monosyllabic and in orcish.

Xavier Longsaddle |
Xavier, as usual, in friendly competition with the 1/2 orc makes his own attempts at finding dinner. He is however, smart enough to note the Barbarians meager findings and doesn't tell the others why he's circling the camp.
Survival1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
He returns, disappointed. Looks like it was trail rations tonight.
Darc Jonash |
The pressure of competition and having to better Darc's roll of 1, Xavier rolls the same, would you believe it!!! Reminds me of our priest in a 1E or 2E game, who was aged when failing a save with a roll of 1, said 'what are the chances' ... and he aged again on a 2nd consecutive roll of 1.
Sami Johoro |
Sami helps Rashun to set up their quick camp as Xavier and Darc hunt for food. He sees Eretria eyeing the chain and gives it a look himself, just to make certain that there was no religious or historical importance to it.

Sami, you're sure there's no relevant information to be had in history or religion.
The experienced gamer knows that you never challenge the dice. They will screw you over.
Eretria Whitethorne |
Whoa Whoa... are you saying if someone stands in it with the ends connected that an aberration won't see them?
"Damn... I think I narrowed down the spell on this thing finally!" She exclaims as she turns the chain over in her hands. "What a very unusual specialization to have... curious... very curious."
The chain seeming to interest her more now then it ever did before.
