”The nostalgia of things unknown, of lands forgotten or unfound, is upon me at times. Often I long for the gleam of yellow suns upon terraces of translucent azure marble, mocking the windless waters of lakes unfathomably calm; for lost, legendary palaces of serpentine, silver and ebony, whose columns are green stalactites; for the pillars of fallen temples, standing in the vast purpureal sunset of a land of lost and marvellous romance. I sigh for the strange and hidden cities of this world, with burning brazen domes and slender pinnacles of gold and copper, that pierce a heaven of heated lazuli.”

Tegan's face turns red with embarrassment, then anger. She narrows her eyes and the rude man, I'm not my sister. Tegan clenches the handle of her trident and frost appears at the edges of her grip. I’m not my sister. Tegan’s blood turns cool, colder, freezing, like ice. I’m not my sister! Tegan is vaguely aware she’s stepped forward (5 feet/1 square) and released the bridle of her mule. I’m not my sister! Tegan’s free hand grasps the shaft of her trident so both her hands are gripping the weapon. Cold air swirls at the man's feet – starting from the ground - forming ice crystals that jut upwards in pointy spikes. The crystals rise and rapidly grow until they reach Tegan’s height (5 feet)

Tegan’s eyes widen in surprise, Did… I- do that? Something inside of her, something more primal and in-tune with nature, had burst forth. Tegan blinks, shock and fear clear on her pretty features. Her thoughts about her sister, gone. ...What?

I'm not sure how the mechanics of spheres work in combat. T.T You'll probably need to correct me.

Your destructive blast becomes an explosion of crystal, growing where it strikes. A crystal blast uses d4’s instead of d6’s as its damage die and deals piercing damage. The target of your crystal blast must pass a Reflex save or be entangled and unable to move. In addition, the target’s square (or the blast’s affected area) becomes overgrown with crystal and counts as difficult terrain. Breaking free of the entangled condition is a move action, requiring either a Strength check or an Escape Artist check against the crystal blast’s save DC. A target may also destroy the crystal on a square or creature by dealing 3 damage per caster level to the crystal. This removes the entangled condition from the creature and destroys the difficult terrain. Crystal disappears after 1 minute.

Taking everyone by surprise, Tegan released an attack, which unfortunately misses, but the die has been cast, and there’s no turning back. The ones inside the trading post shouts in fury and prepare for battle, but they are too slow to react, when compared to the newcomers.
Everyone else can post their combat actions, don’t need to wait for your initiative order, I’ll sort it out based on what happens. Tegan, I counted your attack as a surprise action, you can act again this round. Also, don’t forget that using destruction blast causes an AoO, which didn’t happened the on that particular case because the enemy was flat-flooted.

As the door opened and the scene presented itself, Rendyl relaxed momentarily. Just a group of people loading up from the Trading Post before heading out on their way. The ranger started to stride forward, never one for the niceties unless the situation demanded it. And then the cretin began to spew his bile at his lovely companion, his innuendo crude and not in the least funny. It was men like this who helped to give frontiersmen a bad name.

Rendyl stepped towards Tegan, determined to at least stand by her side so as to deter the man should his carnal hunger get the better of him, when he sees the look of anger on Tegan's face. His mouth gapes slightly as he sees the ice crystals forming on the trident's trio of points, then burst forth to surround the rude portal opener. Then confusion of his own sets in at the look on the woman's face. No time for that! Ask later!

Seeing that those inside were pulling forth their arms, the ranger shouts "Dammit all!" Giving his beautiful companion a quick scowl before quickly pulling his sword and rushing forward to her defense.

It all happens so FAST - Djebelle's barely taken on board the strangers' presence when one of them makes a lewd remark; and Tegan reacts. Oh, boy, does she react.

Still clutching her holy symbol, Djebelle prays: "Dawnflower, guide me!" A flash of light washes out from her, before settling on her sword; it flares briefly like the sun before vanishing.

There's no time to put on her shield. There's no time for anything. At least she was trained in the two-handed style.

Drawing her scimitar, Djebelle points it at the man who made the remark: "Um, I think you upset my friend. Maybe if you apologise, this doesn't have to go any further."

"W-who- What?" Hylaen barely have time to analyze what such rude treatment coming from those man really meant. Tegan proved she can give a brute a scare and they better treat her nicely! The noise and movement that followed was clear enough: Those man weren't there to make friends.

Hylaen moved as swiftly as he could - not nearly enough, compared to some of his companions - and jumped behind cover, as he swiftly grabbed one of his flasks. A simple iron vial for an uneducated observer, the elf just needed to add his special spice, a little shake and the liquid began to foam and heat up.

I think I may have made a mistake in my last post. I don’t think I roll to hit for Crystal Blast. I think it’s just an aoo that happens on the square Tegan targets and then whatever is on the square makes a Reflex save or gets entangled. THEN, if they fail the Reflex save, the character makes a Strength or Escape Artist check to try and avoid the damage. So they only take the damage if they fail the Reflex save AND the Strength/Escape Artist save. (Also, regardless of the roll outcome, the square the spell is cast on becomes difficult terrain until the terrian is dealt 3 damage.) Is this correct? I’ve never played a magic user before D:

Tegan blinks starry-eyed at Vik as he makes a gallant entry. Oh wow, what an entrance! Whatever she’d been expecting, it hadn’t been this. Tegan is shocked at how competent her companions actually are. I have to focus too.

Tegan takes in a steady breath and concentrates this time. She tries to call upon the power she's just discovered. (Casting Crystal Blast again – square directly North of Tegan) She imagines the first cold night of winter and the frozen blades of grass waiting at first light. She focuses on the image of the frost forming and growing to surpass the height of the grass. Higher, thicker, sharper. She aims for the area to the right of the first bandit (1). Blue glass shoots up from the ground forming ragged edges in the five-foot space. Maybe the anxiety of being responsible for mapping this area, or maybe the threat of banditry and the wilds of the Green Belt affected the party mood and judgment. At the first sign of verbal offence, they turned onto violence, and at the expected response from the ‘merchants’ to that same violence from Tegan, the charters go all out, with only Viklop and Djbelle trying a pacific solution.

No that it would matter anyway, although unknown at the time by the charters, they were witness to the robbery at Oleg’s, same type of robbery which made the owner of the trading post send desperate pleas of aid to Restov, and the group of adventures are part of the promised aid, even if they didn’t know it at the moment.

Crystal Blast (Touch Attack): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Bandit Reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

For a moment there, things Viklop words brought a small pause to the ‘merchants’ actions, but soon after his words were spoken, Hylaen throws his unstable mixture at one of the merchants and the ‘boom’ that followed left the man mangled and half dead. Then Rendyl and Tegan pushes matters even further, by attacking the same rude men, as crystal blasts and swords find their way to the man, leaving him also close to death.

The ‘merchants’ eyes, especially the one at the back number 9, burn with rage and hostility as he yells to the rest of the group ”A noble son! Keep him alive as well; I reckon we can earn a pretty sum with his ransom!”

Viklop words all but forgotten, the ‘merchants’ arms in hands prepare their counter attack, boosted by courage in greater numbers.

The merchants go all out in their attack, except for one number 3, which slowly walks away, until he hits the wooden wall, where he leans over and slowly slid to a sitting position.

Without trying to coordinate their attacks, the ‘merchants’ picks targets at random. A couple of shots are sent towards Hylaen, which protected by the wall, finds himself able to just pop his head back outside the fort to avoid the attacks.

Damiel and Djbelle were also target of such attacks, but the hastily fired arrows clanks harmlessly on Djbelle armor, or just on the ground nearby Damiel.

Viklop faced his share of attacks as well, as two of the merchants moved into melee brandishing their short swords to no avail; they were closer to hurting themselves with their own blade than hurting the horseless warrior.

The rude man, entangled by the ice crystals, attacks with his short sword, breaking his prison, but he is too hurt to think of anything else other than move away from the witch and her protector.

Lastly the one at the back, holding a more powerful weapon take aim and shoots toward Tegan. And even in the chaotic melee, his aim is true, the arrow pierces Tegan shoulder. Blood pours out of the wound, as the woman yells in pain and disbelief.

The battle happened with such speed, such violence. The ranger gritted his jaw as his weapon drew blood, the crimson liquid streaming through the air on his backswing as the rude bandit retreated under the combination of sword and sorcery. Rendyl's eyes widened as he saw the dramatic prowess of Vik and the explosive effectiveness of Hylaen.

Though he still thought Tegan's reaction foolish, it was obvious that this group of men were some of the very bandits they were sent to deal with. The tall man was pleased to find that his hand remained steady at the prospect of harming these men. No, not harming those men...protecting this land from these predators.

Djebelle flushes crimson as the realisation of what that threat means hits her, but her embarrassment is quickly erased by a surge of anger; mingled with fear. Her blood pounds hard in her ears, and her knuckles whiten their grip on her scimitar. This is what you trained for, she reminds herself. If you flunk this, you'll flunk every test your whole life.

The fiery explosion was always silent but Hylaen could hear the boom inside his mind, his skin crawling with guilty excitement. He isn't dead. Even I endured more than that. Trying hard not to smile as he hid from the comeback shots, Hylaen glanced at the others and was momentarily distracted. Between Viklop's boastful declaration and Tegan's early winter special, it was a wonder that the bandits had eyes for anything else! Better like this; never liked much to be the center of attention, he thought.

The enemy was mowed down by the melee fighters with bloody effectiveness. Hylaen poked his head out of cover, only to find the other brigands were not that foolish after all, and were way too far for his throwing arm. Cursing with frustration, Hylaen grabs his shortbow. Despite of his impressive boast, Viklop falls short in comparison to his companions, his attack hit the target, but he is unable to put an end to the man in front of him.
Hylaen curses as his enemies stay out of reach and attempt to use his bow but to no avail. It’s been too long and his aim wasn’t the best one.

Damiel maintains his concentration, as fate continues to bless his allies with luck. Lastly, Tegan curses the man with her witchcraft words and stop out of view. Rendyl Millary wrote:
Thinking to switch to a weapon that is more comfortable to him, he drops his sword, pulling his bow and taking a step forward to keep his frame between Tegan's and the enemy before quickly nocking an arrow and firing at the closest bandit.

Why is he trying to cover me? Tegan watches Rendyl drop his sword in favor of a ranged weapon and involuntarily remembers something from her past.

Flashback:
”You need to raise your elbow more,” a young man with messy brown hair and freckles smiles at an adolescent Tegan. He presses her elbow up with two of his fingers. Tegan could smell wood smoke on his leather armor and patchouli, which he used to hide the smell of the tannery.

Tegan’s cheeks flush pink, ”O- oh. Sorry,” she straightens her posture while holding the shortbow.

The young man chuckles, ”You need to stop apologizing when there’s nothing to apologize for.”

Tegan turns an even darker shade of pink, ”Sorr- I mean- …Thank you, Peter.”

Embarrassed, Tegan moves to release her building emotions out on the battlefield. Remembering the past makes her heart ache. She takes a risk by moving towards Vik to join him in attacking the fifth bandit. (5) See map.

Tegan jabs her ice-covered trident at the bandit.

Her first kill

The sound her scimitar makes as it bites into the man's skull cleaving flesh and bone, the sight of his red blood dripping from her blade, the noise he makes as he drops... all of these will stay with Djebelle for a long time. But there's no time to think about it now.

Cursing the weight and discomfort of her armour, she runs forward, ending up alongside Vik but with no breath left to make an attack.

She points her weapon again at the leader, a wordless plea: Don't make this continue.

Double move, stopping when I get to bandit 5 to avoid receiving an AoO

Human Hero Killer1 / Holy Assassin1 / Deceiver2

Djbelle moves towards the enemy, the clumsy armor preventing her from moving freely as one would hope. She goes the long way, avoiding any openings on her stance which would allow the enemy to strike.

Viklop, ignoring his previous bravado, moves mechanically and nonchalantly to attack one of the merchants.

Wondering what sort of thoughts goes into Rendyl head for acting as he did, the embarrassed Tegan coats her trident with ice, piercing the enemy previously hurt by Viklop, putting an end to the man’s life. Blood started to pour out of the wound, but it soon freezes due to influence of Tegan’s power.

Rendyl, abandon his sword and draw his bow, a much more comfortable weapon to use. He takes aim and even the cover from the wagon couldn’t protect the target from the ranger’s arrow.

With an impressive display of courage, or reckless, Hylaen dives forward, unstable potion in hand targeting the grouped enemies. The explosion that followed his dive, left goods and merchants alike burned and damaged, but the target of the blast was the worst of all, mangled burned pieces of meat and bones, that’s what remained of the man.

Damiel moves forward to provide continuous support to this allies, a grim on his face, in face of their prospect of surviving what at first seemed to be a deadly situation.

Rendyl cursed in frustration as his unarmored companion threw herself into harm's way once again, cringing as the multiple arrows flies toward her. Back against the wagon, hiding from the comeback, Hylaen never saw the explosive it the mark, but the smell of burn flesh was a good indicator of what had happened. That, and the screams. Tegan was still the main focus of the enemy - oh, backwood humans, so easily impressed - so Hylaen peeked safely at the frontline, trying hard not to care for the smoking content of the wagon or the blackened form laying on the ground.

As his companions went forward against the leader of the brigands, Hylaen decided to follow. Unstrapping his thin elven spear, the alchemist positioned himself strategicaly, to prevent the enemy of gaining any advantage.

Hylaen hits with his spear when he gets a chance and then looks around. The fight seems to be over. The enemy scattered, fleeing in fear. Although the alchemist always believed in never leaving chance for the worst to happen, he was never one to beat on a dead dog. Not anymore, that is. Not the new me. Hylaen is content to stand near his companions, in standby, spear in hand. If any of the bandits turn suicidal and act violent, Hylaen would retaliate.
The elf didn't really cared about capturing them for the law. Perhaps after staring death in the face, they would change. Hylaen knew that could change a lot in a person. Not always for be best. But not necessarily for the worst too.

Human Hero Killer1 / Holy Assassin1 / Deceiver2

It doesn’t take much after that; sword and sorcery, the remaining of the bandits meet their end at the hands of the charters.

Loot:

  • 8 leather armor
  • 7 longbow
  • 130 arrows
  • 7 short sword
  • 105gp
  • 14 days of trail rations
  • 2 alchemist’s fire
  • composite longbow (+2 Str) with 16 arrows
  • silver amulet

Checking around the bodies, the party gathers their loot. The wagon is loaded with crates of furs and hides (50gp each crate, but they most likely belong to the owner of the fort).
And about the owner, once fights starts, the old man and woman slipped inside one of the building and locked the door.

Now the saviors, the bandit killers have a new path before them, what would they do with this place and its inhabitants?

Human Hero Killer1 / Holy Assassin1 / Deceiver2

Oleg’s Trading Post:

Oleg’s trading post is surrounded by a wooden palisade that stands 10 feet high. At each corner of the palisade are 20-foot-square watchtowers, each armed with a run-down catapult left over from the site’s original use as a border fort. These catapults are in no condition to be fired, and repairing them would take many weeks of work. There’s one entrance through the palisade—a 30-foot-wide wooden gate. It’s a DC 15 Climb check to scale the walls of the palisade.

Specific locations within the palisade are listed in brief below.

  • Market Yard: This open area is where trade takes place. The two tables near the fire pit are used to display wares and serve food to visitors, while bulky trade goods are offloaded into the storage pen.

  • Guesthouse: Oleg rents out the beds in this guesthouse to anyone who wishes to stay the night at a rate of 5 sp a bed per night. A rustic breakfast and filling dinner is included in that price.

  • Stable: Oleg keeps his jittery horse Claptrap here. He rents out the other stalls to visitors’ steeds at a rate of 2 sp per stall per night—that price includes a day’s worth of water and feed and a complimentary rub down for the horse.

  • Storage Pen: This fenced area has a wooden roof to keep off most of the rain and snow—trade goods Stolen Land like furs and other goods are stored here until enough build up to warrant a trip to the city to sell them off. The pen is currently empty, as Oleg’s been forced to turn over his stock to the bandits.

  • Middens: Three 3-foot-deep composting pits and middens.

  • Main Hall: This squat but solid wooden building is Oleg and Svetlana’s home and the storeroom for the trading post. The double doors leading out into the market yard can be barred but not locked.

  • Dining Room: This is a comfortable room with a few chairs and a table—the Levetons use this room primarily as a dining room.

  • Office: This room is where Oleg keeps his ledgers and meets with important visitors—in theory. As of yet, no one of importance has bothered visiting the trading post.

  • Stockroom: This room is used to store the trading post’s stock.

  • Storeroom: This room contains two barrels of drinking water, a half-full barrel of lantern oil, three common lamps, a dozen candles, a week’s worth of firewood, a hooded lantern, 70 feet of hemp rope, a tent, and enough food (mostly cheese, hard bread, and dried venison) to last for 2 weeks.

  • Bedroom: This modest bedroom is where the Levetons sleep.

There’s also, most likely left behind by the bandits seven horses and one light wagon.

After the brief battle ended and his adrenaline had slowed to the point where he couldn't hear his heartbeat in his ears, Rendyl contemplated the two dead men he had put an end to. He had no doubt they were the exact sort of men they had been sent to eradicate from this land, but they were still his fellow men. They possibly had wives they'd no longer share a bed with, children who'd grow up without a father. The ranger said a quick prayer to Erastil, not for the dead bandits, but for their families if any existed.

That being done, he retrieved his longsword, sheathed it, then stalked over to Tegan, a dark look on his face. "How dare you!" His gravelly baritone resounded loudly through the small post's walls. "How dare you put our lives at risk with that little stunt of yours! We're a group, a team, and I don't appreciate being forced into a conflict because you decided it would be so. For all we knew, these were just merchants getting supplies!"

He stared down at the small woman for several moments, glowering, before walking away, trying to see if any of his arrows were salvageable. It would be a good exercise to calm himself and process the entirety of what had just happened.

”Is everyone allright? May I assist with healing?” asks Hylaen shyly, adjusting the mask on his face, looking around to his companions. His stare lingers at Tegan and her blood stained clothes, but dares say nothing else. After Rendyl’s outburst, the elf prefers to stay silent and not stir conflict. If necessary, his services would be requested. The thrill of the fight was wearing off and he was starting to feel sickened. ”Let me know if I can be of use...”

Hylaen will use his skill of Heal on anyone that requires, also on the surviving bad guy (unless Djebelle's heal already worked on him).

Hylaen decided to be practical. He checked the bodies for survivors - "One of them is alive!" he warns - and then went to the door of the home where the true inhabitants of that place had locked themselves.
”Hello?” he said loudly, trying to sound friendly and inspire some confidence. ”We come in peace. My name is Hylaen. I am- We are the charters sent from Brevoy. Perhaps you were warned of our arrival? I’m sorry you had to see, or hear, that violence. We are glad we could prevent the worse from happening. @DM:
What happened with bandit #8? Did my lesser charm work, or was that the one that Viklop put down at the end, before my action to have the bandit fall down?

Having seen his share of battles, but usually not participating to any large extent, after being on the road and wandering so much, Damiel calms down quickly after it is over.

He is right, but needs to control his temper, and so does she he thinks after Rendyl outburst.

As the ranger walks away, Damiel moves over to Tegan and low and softly speaks to her. "Rendyl is correct. That was foolish, reacting that way. With your beauty I am sure that you have heard comments like that before, even in civilized places. This being a frontier area, men and women are much more coarse and rough, so grow a thicker skin, or you will get one of us killed."

With a flick of his wrist, Vik sends the blood and gore off his blade. He then takes a piece of cloth and wipes the blade clean. Only once this is done, does he realize that his horse is gone.

"No, no, no...DAmn! All my supplies and gear was on that horse! I spent my last pence to purchase that gear and that flea-bitten nag!"

He wanders off in the direction the bandit road off, but is brought up short by hearing Rendyl talking to Tegan.

"Easy friend. I know it was not how we would have wanted this to play-out, but we are fine and the enemy is vanquished."

Turning to the beautiful woman he smiles.

"Such a lack of control could be very dangerous to you and us. If you wish I could teach you some techniques to keep your temper under control. We have all made mistakes...but just make sure you learn from it, alright?"

He gives her another reassuring smile then claps the ranger on the shoulder.

"Great work with the bow and sword. I think we can work very well together! Now lets go talk to this Oleg fellow and try and convince him we are not also bandits!"

Her hands are trembling, although she does her best to will them to stop. She busies herself with cleaning the gore off her blade, flinching slightly as she does so. She's only dully aware of Rendyl and Damiel berating Tegan, while Vik takes a more comforting approach. Between them they seem to have said all that is necessary, but she nevertheless gives the other girl a weakly supportive smile: the leader's coarse boast of carrying them both off for the so-called 'Stag Lord' marked him clearly as not being a merchant.

Besides, there's a certain solidarity in such a threat that no man can truly understand.

Still. She has killed someone. Memories and impressions wash over her:

The feel of the blade in her hand as it cut into her opponent... the frantic terror of kill-or-be-killed... the sound of battle...

NO!

Djebelle fights it back. There's work to be done. Practical work.

She nods at Hylaen's warning, and busies herself with securing the remaining bandit who survived the fight, checking his wounds and tying him up with her rope to ensure that he won't run away. She also disarms him. She removes, with cringing hands, the weapons and other equipment from the dead bandits, dropping it all in small piles beside their corpses, before hauling the bodies out of the fort: the owners won't want them buried inside the walls, she reasons.

She leaves the body of the one she killed until last, but eventually can put it off no longer. Doing her best to avert her gaze from his shattered, bloodied visage, she takes his legs and hauls him out with the others, lined up beyond the wall ready for burial. She doesn't have the strength to do anything right now beyond that - even the thought of digging makes her muscles tremble with exhaustion.

Instead, she bows her head to pray: not for their families, as Rendyl did, but for them - the men they were, whose names she doesn't know and who lived doubtless bloody and cruel lives; and the men that she will never know, the men that they will never now have the chance to become. They will have to go to Pharasma judged on what they did, forever deprived of the chance of redemption in Sarenrae's light.

Tears stream once more down her face. "I wanted you to surrender! Why didn't you just suh-suh-suh..."

Her scimitar drops from her hands as she sinks to the ground, sobbing as if her heart were broken and will never mend.
