Neri starts to growl at the man and is caught off guard by a voice that isn't his own, when the lightning strikes him. He's thrown off at first, then the pain sets in. All of his old wounds, breaks, injuries catch up to him in his old age, and there's pain. His movements are sluggish. He can almost -guess- what the man did to him... what the staff did, he corrects himself.

Neri's hand dances through complex motions, lightning arcing along his fingertips, before suddenly disappearing, and Arcing along Id's nine rings, leaping from point to point. Neri misjudges the first swing, and strikes nothing but air as the man flies towards the ground. He corrects that in a moment, as he brings the blade crashing back across, and striking the staff with as much might as his broken body can muster. Lightning leaps from the sword into the staff, as sparks once more fly between the respectively mythic weapons.

Neri shifts backwards, if he broke the staff, he moves a few feet back to stand beside Luna, straight blue hair hanging in his face from the artificial (he hopes) aging, followed by dirty blonde, and then gray. He looks to her then the villagers. If not, he stares at the object of his hatred, resignedly.

Regardless, he'd nod to Luna. "Thanks for coming, I knew we couldn't run from the tyrant. Any man who'd hurt children wouldn't hold anything back to try to kill us. Besides, it takes a special kind of coward to even think of running from that kind of man."

Kong slices the robed man as he stands, then misses with the next strike, and finally hits with the third strike.

Harry's arrow finds it's mark, sinking deep into the robes. He stood up and was no longer prone, so no prone penalty

Finally, Sterling's bomb explodes on contact with the robed man, sending him flying back into a crumpled form on the ground, his robes smouldering.

As he falls, the staff hits the ground and shatters, and everyone in the village cries out and collapses to the ground.

"Dang it.." Neri looks from person to person as they collapse. He'd been hit by a wave of guilt when he'd injured them via the staff. "Remind me why we you guys just murdered their priest? We could have just subdued him.." Neri frowned. He scanned the group seeing who was wounded. Luna. Sterling. He was an old man and had no way of knowing if that would change. "Once everyone is fixed up, we need to talk."

He started moving about the town, checking on the collapsed villagers, starting with the robed man since he was close, then moving on to the children, and working his way up in age. Sterling was going to take care of his most prized pets, so he needn't worry about their group, only the villagers he didn't care about. He thought strongly about going to find Jacob, but he was no tracker, and these people were in more immediate danger.

((Neri is taking 10 on heal checks, just to see how wounded people are. If he feels like he might be able to stop the robed guy from dying, he'll work on that first, and call for help.))

The robed guy is dead, half his face burned off and missing an eye from the bomb blast.

The villagers appear to be alive, but unconscious. The 'brand' or 'tattoo' on their faces however is glowing a nasty lurid red. All of them appear to be sweating heavily, and have elevated temperatures.

As Harry goes to enter the temple, the stone doors slam shut and seal, nearly taking off his hand. Strange black energy crackles over the doors, occassionally arcing off toward him, stopped only by the armor he's wearing. Even then, it feels like a wasp sting every time a tiny bolt hits him.

Sorry, right. Self-defense... but I'm looking at it from their perspective. Neri said from over his body, then moved on to another.

Neri quickly casts detect magic, focusing first on the runes, then the ruined staff. Neri tried casting an arcane Mark over the glowing rune, delivered through his sword, to see if he could magically erase the Mark.

Jacob had run a distance from the scene and was kneeling in the grass. Not a religious man, he'd need enough bloodshed and experienced enough of this new place now to re-question the existence of god. "Barathiel, please forgive our sins. Though he himself did not fight the villagers, he was concerned that such a being here might actually exist and exact some horrific revenge on them - if the wildlife was any indicator.
