Oof. Didn’t see that coming!

Murder is one way to get killed, but I wouldn't read too much into the blog's use of that word.

Product description describes Aroden as "the dead god of humanity whose murder triggered the beginning of the current age!", so it might benefit from being updated to "death"? I know I saw it and assumed that we were getting a pretty major "cause of death" update with the new edition.

Yeah, that's a poor choice of words. I'll see if we can get it fixed.

It now only says death. Still can't wait.

I mean, he's a god. Did you think he died from suicide or a disease or old age? Stumbled into a blackhole or a mimic or a pit trap that could kill a god? Of course someone killed him.

I firmly believe that he slipped in the bathtub, yes.

I get it. The burden of proof on proving murder is pretty high. It would also probably decrease the property values in Absalom if it was confirmed their savior god was murdered. Accidental death? Involuntary manslaughter? These things happen

Friendly fire.

This will finally reveal Aroden faked his own death to take a vacation.

Transporter accident when beaming back down.

This is the adventure path where we find that aroden had a very very large flock of crows as followers.

We discover his death was actually a plot by Arazni to try to take over. Last time this slipped out… there was a multiversal memory hiccup that seemed to affect everything, but especially around the world of Aroden’s origin. In fact I’m having trouble recalling, but I think they lost it.

Yep.

Yes, what were we talking about? Why am I holding an empty book?

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Ages ago I pestered Luis Loza on Twitter with questions about Aroden's fate.. I do absolutely love the idea of perhaps learning more about this (if it touches upon that!). I was designing a campaign based on 'some secrets are best left buried forever' connected to Aroden.. I'm very excited. The Lore nerd in me really wants to dig into this.

This talks a LOT about Aroden's....

Spoiler:
... history and how he became a god and what happened before that, but does not offer clues about his fate. It might do a little bit of teasing about that though...

Aaaaah got it, got it. That's still very exciting to me. Effectively: Throw me any lore about deities, old civilizations and what not.. My players are going to be exposed to it one way or another. :-)

Spoilery Question:
That begs the question though: Are there any plans to ever clarify more about his fate or is that a question better left to 'patience and wait and see'? ;-)]

Either way: An adventure in Absalom on these topics? Count me in. Already informed my usual group that I'll be subjecting them to this

We have never had plans to reveal more about how Aroden died, nor do we have any plans to do so.

Hahahah that's meant to be in that case! Cool! I actually really like leaving it like that. There are some very cool theories out there that I enjoy. I'll continue crafting away at my own with that in mind :3

Something something Mephistopheles. Something something Asmodeus. Something something Sarenrae and Pharasma. Something something I don't know what I'm doing.

He got sick of the whole thing and gave up his powers so he could retire to Perth, Australia.

This is really funny to me, there was an arc of my campaign set in Absalom that was literally about this! Down to the visions about Aroden's life. Makes sense since I pulled info about the Sanctum from the Absalom book (also by Erik Mona), but it's still cool to see.

Yup! That's exactly what's going on. Originally, the Absalom book and this adventure were both supposed to come out at the same time along with the launch of 2nd edition but... that was a bit too ambitious even BEFORE you factor in a pandemic lurking right around the corner.

He was found guilty of genocide against the xulgath and was quietly sentenced to death by his peers.

Guy was a big time jerk.

Aroden was already dead and waiting patiently for resurrection and coming back to Golarion when Pharasma lost prophecy and absent-mindedly judged his soul away.

I prefer “What Aroden (the blundering god) Did, the AP.” I think that behind the scenes, Pharasma saw Aroden’s bungling in her prophetic visions so she and the other gods insisted that he build a cathedral full of traps around the Starstone so other mortals could not so easily rise to godhood. Once the gods realized that this new upstart never looked backwards at his decisions, to perhaps try and fix his errors… Well, somebody had to disappear. Deities don’t really like a bull blundering through the carefully constructed reality that is creation. The real question is, who did the deed?

As with all the great mythological stories, it's a lot more fun and creates a lot more adventure opportunities when we present deities (the closest thing we as the world creators have to something akin to a "protagonist" to use in writing stories that we, ultimately, have no agency over in deciding what your PCs, the ACTUAL protagonists, are going to do) is to present them as flawed characters who make mistakes. A deity who perfectly personifies their job and never makes errors is no fun!

It sure seems like Paizo has been erasing or altering a lot of "flawed" gods lately though.

The less outrageous they are, the more true to their shallow personas, the more page space they seem to get in Paizo publications. The truly disturbing and evil gods are lucky if they can get anything more than a row on the Divine Mysteries web enhancement table.

Pathfinder increasingly seems softer as a setting when it used to be able to easily handle both soft and hard stories.

It's not limited to gods either. Ogres, drow, joyful things, anything that could be considered even remotely offensive is killed off, smoothed over, or forgotten.

It's one of the few things I really dislike about your otherwise fine company. It's fine now, but if it goes on like this for another decade, Disney will be telling harder stories than Paizo.

We still have deities in the setting. They all remain imperfect in various ways.

My favorite, Desna, is FILLED with flaws, for example. They make her infinitely more interesting.

EDIT: I'd also cite Curtain Call as a recent example of a story about a different flawed deity whose name I won't mention here for spoiler reasons.

Spoiler:
It's not Gorum. Curtain Call is not about Gorum, really.

I mean, Arazni might be the most flawed god a heroic character could possibly follow (she's not good and isn't even trying to be good, but you can be good and follow her just fine), and also someone whose problems are mostly due to Aroden.

James could we get a god of Rogues that is path who's not a murderous Psychopath no need to do the current one in just one who is natural and not evil.

There are literally hundreds of deities in the setting to choose from. You don't HAVE to pick one of the core 20. Look through the Appendix to Divine Mysteries and I'm sure there's one that'll work for your character. If you're specifically looking for a good one, maybe focus on the Empyreal Lords, like Kelinhat perhaps?

Here's a list of all the deities with thievery or stealth as their skill who don't allow unholy sanctification. And, because I know that "Rogue" covers a variety of things, here's the list with deception added in as well.

Secret internal emails from Paizo have revealed that Aroden was killed by his twin brother Nedora because mom always liked him best.

This just in: Nedora cursed to wander Golarion with a mark upon his face to display his evil deeds.
