Best Shield for a Sword-and-Board Warpriest?

Now that the Remaster has given the Warpriest a glow-up, I'm wondering what kind of Shield serves their needs best. My immediate instinct is the Staff-Storing Shield from Secrets of Magic, since both they and Druids can get the most out of it, while Sparkling Targe Magi can use the Fused Staff feat to plug a staff into their weapon, freeing them up to use whatever shield they want. But I'm wondering if I'm getting tunnel vision and if such a character might benefit more from one of the other kinds of shields.

In general are you going to want to spend the actions to turn it into its staff form and back? I wouldn't normally tend to think so. Given that you're a full caster with a font, a viable melee attack, and a shield in hand, I'd figure that you can afford to stash your staff in your pack by default, and let it be pretty much a noncombat thing. Save yourself those actions.

Now, from what I can recall, warpriests don't have much for reactions, which means that if you're using a shield at all, you'd proably be well-served to use shield block. I'd suggest taking a look at the available shield options with that in mind.

With the new shield rune, shields of all kinds compete with sturdy shields for hardness and hp. Casters targe is a good one for the scrolls. Bucklers can reliably shield block now too so you could have access to your healers tools for battle medicine. Fortress shield if you really want to tank.

I thought staves were MEANT to be used in combat as a way of freeing up your spell slots for more utility-type spells. There isn't much use for casting fireball or force barrage outside combat, is there?

For staves at least I still haven't found a worthwhile staff that wasn't the divination staff (now uncommon lol) or the illusion staff (because a font of illusory objects is amazing).

For shields, it's gotta be the spellguard shield right? Throw some reinforcing runes on it and shield block attacks and spells alike. Also fixes your awful caster save scaling with the +2 circumstance bonus to saves vs spells.

Warpriest doesn't really have caster save progression. It's much closer to martial scaling, starting with two at expert and ending with two at master.

Spellguard doesn't stack with Emblazon + Raise Symbol, which I assume many warpriests are going to pick up. The ability to block spells would still be pretty decent, especially with the high level feat that's let's you bolster the hardness with Heal/Harm.

Good point. Haven't quite internalized all the new stuff yet.

Warpriest save progression didn't change in the Remaster. Starts with Expert in Will & Fortitude (the latter from 1st Doctrine); gets Resolve @ 9th (Master Will + Save to Critical upgrade) & 5th Doctrine (aka Juggernaut, Master Fort & Save to Critical upgrade) @ 15th.

Spined is very nice earlier on:
it gives some high ranged options (now that warpriests are proficient with all martials weapons it works godd enough) plus some added "shield hp" on top of the reinforcing rune.

afterwards, at higher levels, probably a clockwork shield for the extra shield block for a whole fight every hour.
