Need help finding ways to play during a difficult time.

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

In November my wife left me. I was suffering from depression and she didn’t want to live with depressed me anymore. So she left me, which means I also lost the children that I see as my own. Due to this I lost my home, and had to move back in with my parents in another state, so I also lost my job. I had just started a new campaign with my gaming group and also lost my gaming group.

Then came the new year with Wizards of the Coast trying to burn down their company. Now I have played D&D, with the exception of 4e, since I was 12. So I am looking for advice on how to find a game of Pathfinder 2e to get involved with so that I can enjoy the hobby I love so much.

As you can see I am not going through a good time in my life.

Relevant Notes
• I still do not have a job as work in the small town I live in is very scarce.
• I only have my phones hotspot for internet at the moment, and while it is unlimited it is pretty slow. I can’t play videos. I have to download them and watch them offline.
• I live in a very small town where most people have no clue what a TTRPG is. One of those towns where if they do know what they are they may be on the devil worshiper list of favorite activites, along with human sacrifice and eating babies. I am a little hesitant to advertise my hobby.
• I have been making extensive use of Archives of Nethys to learn the rules and make a few characters for PF2e. I will be asking for advice on my builds and concepts over there shortly.

I thank you for any suggestions you may have.

You sound pretty isolated, and most of the better solutions for playing the game will need reliable internet access.

One way of playing that might be workable for you is the Play By Post games here on the Paizo website.

There's a Play By Post forum, and GMs looking for players regularly post in the Recruitment subforum.

You might also consider picking up the PDF copy of the Core Rulebook, which in spite of its flaws, usually makes more sense than the disconnected tidbits you can find on AoN.

Hey, I am sorry that you are going through such a rough time. If I could offer you hot tea and hugs, I would.

So I am going to second the suggestion to play via Play-by-Post. If you can post to our forums, you can play in Play-by-Post. It is a game played slowly over the course of a few weeks instead of a few hours. There is lots of roleplay, and you get to play with people from all over the world.

I suggest that you play PFS scenarios to start, as they are short, and they usually get GMed all the way to the end as a result.

BONUS LINKS:

There is a PBP Lodge for Pathfinder Society 2E Organized Play, Cottonseed Lodge.

There is a PBP Convention, Outpost, coming up March 26th.

Take care,

Play by post is the way to go: I used to play that way when I still had dial-up so you'll be fine with a hot spot. The link Dancing Wind posted is a good place to start.

I believe the Cayden's Keg discord has 'play by post' offerings as well. They're a welcoming group of people.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think that Cayden's Keg would be an excellent choice. It's not just gaming that you are pining for, it's community. Cayden's Keg is welcoming, and has a wide variety of friendly chats that go on in that server.

It does have Play-by-Post (though they do it as Play-by-Discord) and I believe that it could be a good match for what you are looking for. I am going to try and cast 'Summon Venture Officer' to see if I can bring someone from Cayden's Keg over here to talk to you.

Let's get you in a game.

Dusts of shoulders and shakes cobwebs off from the quick summoning.

Hello Ramlatus,

While I can't promise you that Cayden's Keg is the exact place you are looking for, it is certainly a great place to hang out and interact with a bunch of others who love this hobby. As was mentioned, we do offer a plethora of Play-by-Discord (PbD) games but even if you don't partake in those specifically, there are tons of people talking day all day about different parts of the hobby and sometimes just life. Here is the link to our discord (Cayden's Keg).

In addition to our lovely lodge, Find the Path (FTP) and Roll for Combat also are similar places to hang out to talk or possibly grab PbD games.

I was going to say that Rpol.net was where I got my first Play-by-Post experience, and it is a good community. However, I do recall (and I don't think it is just exclusive of RPOL) that one potentially frustrating part of Play-by-Post is that the combination of potentially slow rate, and how people's lives change over time, that sometimes games start, and then die before they get to far, which can be a frustration for people, especially if they are staring out depressed and feel like it is something tied to them, rather than the medium of the game.

Games naturally last longer when you actually have built up a connection/relationship with the other players. it is easier to commit the time to make posts when you feel something for your fellow participant than when they are just a screenname you read a few times a week.

You are in a Pathfinder forum, but if it is primarily RPG like interaction, there is a Starfinder Amazon Alexa solo adventure that might be at least something you could dip your feet into. Don't know it would fulfill all of your yearning, but it might be something that at least might be a fun thing you can do as you look for games on a discord, like has been recommended.

I think the Discord idea is probably best for you at this point, and although trying to get into a game would of course be great, but I think an important part would be getting to know some people interactively in the discord... even if it is getting help to understand the differences between 5e and Pathfinder second edition. I think after getting to know people, and them learning what sorts of interests you have in gaming, they may end up knowing people who are starting a game, or who are needing to replace a character that might have dropped from a game someone is running.

You can watch some actual play videos from YouTube to get used to some of the aspects of play, and they can be fun stories too. Some of them such as Knights of Everflame, Oblivion Oath, and Quest, Band of Bravos. All of which have the benefit of the fact that I don't believe any of them spoil any AP that you might be likely to find the opportunity to play in.

Some other Actual Play of actual published Adventure Paths might spoil some of the fun of playing in the actual story if the opportunity comes up. (although keep in mind that if you do, just because something happens in the video, doesn't mean the GM didn't do something different for any number of reasons, so don't assume everything in the video is in the actual adventure)

Some other things to keep in mind is that Paizo like to occasionally support some charities by putting up some HumbleBundles (humblebundle.com) and those are almost always good opportunities to boost your library of electronic copies of past Paizo published material. So if you save up some 20-30 dollars up for charity every so often, you can often turn that into quite a few items you likely don't have yet. They sometimes offer the highest tier including one of their print books. You donate on humblebundle for that highest tier and it comes with a code that activates a free order of the book via the Paizo site. While the book is technically free (the money you spent was to donation), you do need to pay for shipping for the book, so I want to make sure you know that and that doesn't surprise you.

after you get more used to the game, you might also look at some of what is offered at https://www.pathfinderinfinite.com/ as free download or PayWhatYouWant product in there. You might also keep your eyes open, as with the controversy brewing about OGL, I've learned of others who played RPG games that I didn't know played, and have heard my daughter mention she learned of some teachers who played at her school, because they were discussing the controversy. So now it a good time to keep eyes open for others who might express an awareness of the controversy and potentially learn of some others who might play, that you didn't know that they did.

You might also be able to 'catch' other people's attention by getting a Pathfinder Tales novel and carrying it around to periodically read during breaks as would/could be appropriate, or wear some clothing item, shirt, hat, etc. that has something about Pathfinder or other roleplaying connection. (don't do something inappropriate for your work however, obviously) This might work to sort of fish for others with similar interests. If you have a desk, if you can bring in a character miniature and put it on your monitor stand, it could be a conversation starter, for instance.

@Ramlatus

I'm sorry to hear what you went through to get here, but welcome to the Pathfinder community. Hmm and Lesrek have already pointed you to some great game finding and community resources, so I won't belabor the point. I'll just say "Welcome" and wish you luck on finding a gaming community you can immerse yourself in.

If you want to talk about how to use these great online resources, just DM me. Happy to help.

I also want to note here that Ramlatus just made one of the single most courageous and outgoing posts that I have seen on this forum. They're reaching for their gaming community. Let's support them.
