Having left the military, they were unable to also leave behind their taste for destruction. They soon acquire or build a Grenade Kit, and the rest is explosive. In the modern era, with vaporizers and plasma rays, there isn't much use for demolitions experts outside of the military—except out on the frontier planets, that is, where someone who can blow up stuff real damn good never goes out of style.

Obscuring mist and fog clouding spells have long been iconic examples of low-level magic powers, widely renowned for their ability to make a mess of the battlefield, turning combat into a game of hide-and-seek.
Many spellcasters still frown upon the clouds that hinder them as much as their opponents, choosing more direct-effect spells to prepare. No surprise that divine spellcasters are sometimes found most heretically grumbling at the unavoidable obscuring mist spell in their domain spell lists.
Yet some curious researchers have delved deeper into the secrets of mists, finding ways to improve their eyesight, get new summon-able monsters, and shape cloud dwellings. They have found ways to get results normally impossible at windier places with better view, where mist doesn't stay long enough.

The kinds of jobs on offer for such groups are often a bit dodgy and under-compensated for the level of danger involved, but the mercs of the ARST will take those jobs, and they will do them well, because they are professionals. More than that, though; this is the only kind of life they care to live.

A group of oil executives were negotiating a deal in the oil-rich kingdom of Kudesh. It is unclear at this time whether the deal went south, the executives insulted their hosts, or a resistance movement infiltrated the meeting. What is known: the oil executives have been taken hostage and need to be rescued before they are executed on camera. But, there's a problem: Kudesh is a pariah state. To send in the cavalry would be to tacitly admit to having trade talks with one of the “exporters of evil”. This is where the ARST comes in, hired to go where others cannot, and to do what others cannot bring themselves to do.
