Plant Eidolon Tendril Strike and lvl 7 Growing vines

Rules Discussion

Ok I know the book is new but I think this needs a touch of clarification.

So Tendril strike allows for one action my Eidolon to make a strike with ether of it's attacks granting +5' reach. Ok that seems clear.

Growing vines (lvl7) gives all my Eidolon's melee unarmed attacks the reach trait.

Does this mean that my plant Eidolon can now do attacks at 15' using Tendril strike? or is Growing vines just useless? Or does Tendril strike do something different or have a limitation I am unaware of?

How is this all effected when I make my Eidolon large through a feat or spell?

Ok I just realized one situation where it's better to have the reach trait and that's for AoO's. So it is an upgrade at lvl 7 for that specifically but if one didn't take that feat it could be useless if it doesn't stack with Tendril strike.

Keep in mind that tendril strike is its own unique action too. So while it increases reach for that strike, it doesn't increase reach for something like, say, field of roots.

Oh I know and like I said I just realized that with AoO the lvl 7 ability really helps but it seems almost like it's the same thing as the lvl 1 ability so I want to make sure if they stack or not.

Reach is something that doesn't stack unless there's a value ( for example being large / huge ).

The reach trait states

Quote:
Natural attacks with this trait can be used to attack creatures up to the listed distance away instead of only adjacent creatures. Weapons with this trait are long and can be used to attack creatures up to 10 feet away instead of only adjacent creatures. For creatures that already have reach with the limb or limbs that wield the weapon, the weapon increases their reach by 5 feet.

lvl 1. a specific attack gain reach

lvl 7. all your attacks gain reach

I can just guess that with a plant its main attack ( or an attack of your choice ) gets the reach trait, and at some point all your plant eidolon attacks gets it.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The level 1 ability doesn't give an attack reach, it increases your reach for that attack.

The level 7 ability gives your unarmed attacks the reach weapon trait.

They absolutely can both be on at once.

Agreed. The wording is clear. Tendril Strike, used by a level 7 plant eidolon, can target an enemy 15ft away.

I think you're right. Gotta wonder if that is intended.

So, by level 7 the plant Eidolon has a reach of 20 feet when large and using tendril strike. And it goes up from there :-).

I'm pretty sure just about every Summoner using this build is going to take Attack Of Opportunity at level 6. Also combines very nicely with shove or trip trait

I can only assume that it is intended.

Do note, the +5 reach extension from tendril strike would not effect the AoO.

Sure. "Only" a 15 ft range for AoE attacks. I think I can live with that

Yeah getting the size improvements and AoO seems like the way to go with Plant eidolons. Eventually gaining a reach of 20 feet, 25 with tendril strike. Sounds pretty fun!
