What’s the deal with the sabosan?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

These guys are so weird and freaky. Vampire creatures that maybe fell from grace?

The name sounds like sasabonsam, a creature from Akan* folklore that attacks people and sucks their blood hence the vampire comparison. I'm 99% sure that's what the source of inspiration is given the similarities and their geographical placement in fantasy sub-Saharan Africa. Don't know much about the Pathfinder-specific lore, but looking up their mythological counterparts could give you some ideas if you plan to use them in a game.

The original and primary goal back in the early days of Pathfinder was to create a bat/human type monster that wasn't goofy—there'd been several attempts through the years that we at Paizo weren't fond of, either because the art or the lore (or in some cases both) ended up making them goofy. Hearing that folks think of the sabosans as "weird and freaky" is good to know, since that means the deal with them has been met—they were intended to be frightening, weird and freaky monsters to fight.

I read the title as Jerry Seinfeld and now I know what my next bard specializing in Perform: Comedy will be like.

It's always struck me that the Sabosan worshipped two diametrically opposed gods, one of them being Lawful Good, and yet are generally neutral evil. I'd imagine that once Jaytirian fell, they took on a more cruel and savage bent.

Does anyone know how much they Drain from their Grabbed Victims? I'm presuming it's the same damage as the Melee Jaws strike.

Thanks!
