So the rules for array say it multiplies by 1 and an array weapon uses 2 weapon mounts. So I'm thinking its the following . . .
1) Original system Persistent Particle Beam (40 PCU, 25 BP)
I upgrade it to an array. It now uses 2 heavy weapon mounts but the costs don't change unless I don't have a second heavy weapon mount and need to add one.
However I can see an argument that you'd need to put a second persistent particle beam in the second slot. Meaning your total cost is actually 80 PCU, 50 BP similar to if you linked 2 together for double damage to a single target. So can anyone confirm if the only cost for upgrading to an array is the loss of one of your weapon mounts?

That's certainly how I read it. For added amusement, stick Array on something with Broad Arc (gyrocannon, maybe). You can still only do the Array multiattack in one arc at a time, but you could pick any of three options, with two of them at -6 to hit everything - the latter being a "design feature" rather than a flaw if you're doing risky shots that include allies and have a good enough computer bonus to still have decent odds on the things you really want to hit.
More effective to just use Array on your turret, but I'm not sure I'd actually want to have Array on my precious turret gun(s) in the first place. :)

To be honest I'm already using turret to replicate multiple guns (top, bottom, sides). Essentially the ship has full coverage because at least one gun will be facing any given direction (turret) but I'm not buying 7 or 8 different weapons especially since the system doesn't have a top/bottom of ship arc. To be honest I really wish I could duplicate how star trek's ship phasers can be fired in single shots, pulses, beams, multi-array spreads and even dial its output for anything beyond stun this city to melt this planet. Literally in the original series they tried to stun an outpost to make reclaiming hostages easier but it had energy dampners that nullified the low power blast and high power risked killing the hostages.

Starfinder's approach to starship design has kind of a lot of holes, 3D combat aspects and that style of versatile weaponry among them. Admittedly, allowing starship weapons to stun whole city blocks from orbit (looking at you, Piece of the Action) has some problems for RPG play, but I suppose you could always just play one of the various Star Trek RPGs out there.

It's less i want starship weapons with stun and more each release is adding rules for specific scenarios (arrays, line, mystical, orbital and so on) that decrease the ability to fluff your weapons. Instead of this particle weapon fires a beam of energy slicing a weaker ship in half or these missiles bombard a settlement you now need to upgrade the weapon beforehand with that specific property to do so. Want your ship to have a VI interface well ok but you need to buy the level of VI and skill expander modules now. Some are helpful but we're not seeing any way to increase BP while we are seeing increases in what we need to buy with the BP we have.
Now you need them for more expensive weapons, weapon upgrades, new expansion bays, VI and so on yet you still only get tier BP capping at 1,000.
