New Character for Carrion Crown

Advice

After the sad demise of my Wizard I need to come up with a new character for the Carrion Crown AP.

The current group is a Rogue/Sorc, Warpriest, Bard and Fighter (when he turns up).

Truthfully, I'm struggling for ideas as I'm not really feeling it with regards to the horror elements in CC so I'm hoping for 'fun' suggestions.

Full caster is out as I just played one, despite it probably being the best option, as I hate just slotting in more of the same when I lose a character.
Other than that I'm open to pretty much anything than won't look out of place in the setting so suggestions welcome.

What's the level of the current party? That could open up some builds that would suck the first few levels, but then really open up.

Everyone just hit 7 so would be coming back as 6 or 7

An Order of the Tome Cavalier can cast spells from scrolls at 8th level. It's not full spellcasting, but if you stock up on cool scrolls, you have access to a lot of spells your Bard and Rogue/Sorcerer don't have. That fits the "not a full caster, but still the best option" slot pretty well, I guess. Also helps give a bit more frontline if necessary. Do note that you're casting from scrolls, so you're probably more of a utility caster, rather than a full-time blaster like a Wizard.

Another option is the Occultist. Also INT-based, 6/9th spellcaster, and can be modified in any way you need. The Psychodermist is a "monster hunter" type that wears his kills. Might be kinda cool in Carrion Crown.
Do talk this over with your GM though, I've had a Psychodermist player and he got crazy powerful at high level. Didn't help that Wrath of the Righteous throws goodies at the players, so that. Still, high-level Occultists are a pain in the ass.

Given the party composition, I think you are free to do pretty much anything.

Personally I'd study the player guide (free to download) for inspiration. It mentions changelings, dhampirs and orcs as fitting choices for the campaign and it offers a quarter page to every CRB and APG class (and magus).

Given the level, paying an NPC to raise the wizard could be an option. If raise dead is too expensive, rolling the fortune wheel with reincarnate is an alternative. In case the roll is horrible, you could still retire the character - or ask the GM for another attempt.

I fully disagree with the suggestion to play a monstrous race (like dhampirs).

I think Carrion Crown is much more enjoyable if you are a hapless dweeb in the middle of countless horrors.

I recommend you go with an Unchained Monk, pick up some fun powers, and enjoy being on the face of some of the most evil creatures out there.

I'm playing a 7th level Haunt-Collector Occultist in Carrion Crown and I've loved every second of it.

The archetype adds a little, but so far I haven't made use of some of the more iconic abilities. Esoteric Initiate might have been a good choice too.

Even a different type of full caster?

A Death Druid would be pretty good in this AP.

I have other ideas for full casters, but will wait for interest.

As for non-full casters:

Undead Scourge Paladin

Spiritualist

Investigator

Obviously in Carrion Crown you'll see a bunch of undead. Also your party might not be the best at keeping their glass cannons alive considering your wizard's death, a 6-level spellcaster might be better than full anyway.

Area damage seems likely to not be your parties best thing right now - maybe an alchemist, possibly with the cryptbreaker archetype?

How about being an Alchemist, shooting exploding bullets or exploding arrows? I have a build for a Goblin Gunchemist named Godfrey Gloop (Not very elaborate: the character builds himself.). In addition to the coolness of exploding arrows, Alchemists make awesome Grapplers.

How about being an Eldritch Knight/Arcane Archer? I was just talking with people on another thread about Living Monolith. I have a build for a sledge-hammer-wielding, Shikigami Style, Titan Fighter that takes levels in Inquisitor and dips a level in Living Monolith, but I was also just thinking it might be cool to dip a level in Wizard and get an Ib Stone, so his Caster levels keep increasing while his BAB goes up at a respectable rate and he gets powerful defensive abilities to go with that Enlarge Person ability.

I have a build for a Natural Attacking Tengu Warpriest I call an Angry Bird build.

And I have a Druidzilla build.

Wow, that's alot of cool ideas :-)

Looking at the suggestions, Occultist and Spiritualist would be out as we don't have the Occult Adventures so the GM, quite reasonably, won't allow it.

Ditto with anything Unchained unfortunately.

Order of the Tome Cavalier is definitely an option as the party has a bunch of scrolls and being able to use those would be a bonus and full BAB is always nice.

The Undead Scourge Pally would fit the setting really well, also.

Some sort of Alchemist also looks like a definite option as I hadn't realised just how flexible they could be so I could tweak it to better suit what the group is going to need.

Really appreciate all the help guys!

For my grappler, Order of the Penitent is essential.

Our group intentionally didn't play paladins (and i love Paladins). I think the players' guide recommends that too. You can do it, but you'll be bypassing a lot of the challenges of this AP.

Why don't you try a heaven bloodrager or a life shaman It will help the party and don't miss the chance to do some good dmg
