Well heavy lifting builds mass. Big weight big muscles. light with more reps tends to build leaner muscle. I think the light weight with many reps is probably more Ninja training then the alternative.
If I'm not mistaken I think the most effective way is to alternate on different days. Some days big weights some days many reps.
I can never keep my workouts in check (that's why I bring my phone to the gym), since it's my log book that I wrote everything down, including screw ups =P I know a lot of leet ninja skills depend on your grip strength and how much you can hang around (literally).

Yeah but you have to be able to do that for a good duration too. so reps!

But but... I've increased the number of reps to 8!
A day in the gym looks something like this:
Deadlift @ bar +12.5kg (x8)
Deadlift @ bar +17.5kg (x8)
Deadlift @ bar +18.125kg (x8)
Deadlift @ bar +18.125kg (x8) - No breaks!
Lowered bar all the way to the ground.
Chest press(gosh, Gym is sure busy on lunch break), grabbed a flat bench with the 60 lb barbell (x8), 3 sets
Squat:
Guys in the squat rack, pistol squat attempts with door frame, x 10 per leg
My left leg is noticeably stronger then my right. I can feel it when I pistol squat.
Pull ups:
6 jump pull ups (None went up)
6 jump chin ups (all went up)
4 jump pull ups (none went up)
4 jump chin ups (2 went above bar)
2 jump pull ups (none went fully up)
2 jump chin ups (both went up)
Clean and press bar x8 +1.25 kg weight , 3 sets, last set took a break at 5.
Farmers walk with a 14 kg dumbell and a 12 kg dumbell - yes I am a nub who didn't check the weight again. Got halfway across the gym.

Wow I wish I had the time for that level of investment.
When I'm a little pressed for time/alternate days where I do not hit the gym, I do the standard push up on my toes, 14 reps, for 3 sets. Will find a bar and do 10 hanging leg raises and do 30 burpees. I'm thinking of trying to do dips but they aren't easy...
I feel any obstacle course race requires a connection between your mind and body, which body weight exercises may be more helpful in giving.

I went to a horse ranch the other day. The man showing me around gestured at some horses in a building. He said "These are the stables." Then he gestured at some horses in a pen far from everything else. One of them exploded. He said "And those are the unstables."
Would make for one dynamite horse show.

I ran with the local run group for 13.3 km at a 6'35 pace. In PSI levels above 100(unhealthy range). I'll say it was rough but the fact that I managed to pull it off(considering I started the run 15 min after dinner) made me feel good about myself.
Here was what I had for dinner, as part of a seminar:
1 smoked salmon canape
1 tuna mayo canape
1 zucchini eggplant cheese canapé
1 beef pastrami canape
1 mini beef burger
2 little cobbs salad(probably the healthiest of the savouries consisting of smoked turkey breast, salad and mayo which I left behind)
1 little caesar salad
1 little paad Thai
2 little fruit salad(mix of pineapple, cantaloupe, dragon fruit and grape) - I must say their fruits were good.
Drinks were provided but I decided against it since I wanted to run and alcohol + run is a bad idea.

Oooo, I've gone fishing with dynamite, but I never even considered horses with dynamite. Thanks!

Freehold,
I assure you. Math hasn't gotten me so much as I reached an accord with it. I don't talk smack about it, it doesn't try to screw me over with probability outcomes that would be detrimental to me.
I'd be addicted to smart phones if I had one...if only because it would help me pass the time when I can't stand to watch TV.

A canape is a snack kind of thing. Like a filling(say tuna mayo) on a piece of bread a quarter the size of your palm.

Yeah I've been too lack with my work out since my surgery. I think I need to get back in gear with it. I had lost 10 pounds in two weeks before but since the surgery I've been pretty well stagnant no lose no gain. Even keeping with my diet doesn't seem to get me any lose.
HA google found out what a mud masters course was for me. That looks rough.

The lower you get, the harder it is to lose even more weight simply because there's less of you to burn energy. The only way around that is to build muscle so you burn more energy even while resting.

Holy *! I looked through my Spartan downtown gift bag and there's an option to sign up trial for a free ballet class. Dancing cats, lol? But graceful would be the last thing I'd describe myself as =P
PS. The haze situation is getting worse. PSI>100
So outdoor classes are being cancelled and I'll need to find replacements to them. I don't really care for running in the haze overly much either.

Just a Mort wrote:Good luck Woran! It requires quite some upper body strength and flexibility, and tell us how it goes, including every obstacle in detail! I'm studying =PI have NO upper body strength, so Its going to go hilariously!
I think it's not as bad as Spartan. Spartan it's like almost every obstacle requires upper body. I have issues scaling walls (I did the cheap hack using the slates and a nearby pillar) - oh whatever that works =P Stairs shouldn't be a problem for me since I try run up 11 storeys for s*!$s and giggles every alternate day for vertical marathon practice. Sure I'm not exactly fast... Nor very good with stamina, but I get along. The net walls if you need to jump for it will also be upper body strength. But at least you can focus on getting your legs to the other side so it's not that bad.
Monkey bars yeah, happy swinging. I'll try some swinging later and see how epically I fail.
If I were in NL I'd run it with you =D
