Flame Staff and spell roll caculation

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I'm new to game and want to say I love the support this game gets here in the forum. Everyone does such a good job, so thank you. It is really helpful.

I am playing as Seoni. I have flame staff (item), which says "for your combat check, reveal to use Arcane + 1d4" in my hand. Also in my hand a spell that says I can use it for my combat check, which rolls for my arcane + 2d4.

I assume I can play both, as they are different types. But I also have to guess that if I do play both I am only rolling my arcane (d12) once? And then adding 3d4. If I am right about only rolling 1d12 (my arcane) once, I can't figure out why or what I am missing out of the rules.

Thanks in advance!

You can only use one card or power that says "for your combat check" or otherwise determines the skill to use for a check. (Determine Which Skill You're Using, p. 11 of the Core Set Rulebook.)

Ok thank you very much! One sentence makes all the difference. :)
