Oh-HOH~!
The first time we see Romulans! Ever! Hoohoohoo~!
(We're watchin' Balance and Terror, y'all~! It's really good!)
HOLY CARP~! This was fantastic!
I gotta say, after the silly nonsense of before, this is one of the finest episodes and probably one of the best things ST's done - better than I remembered, by far.
Based on naval submarine war films, it's well paced, well plotted, and well executed in almost every way. Better than most of their films by a fair measure (and <most of> the films are better than <most of> the episodes I've seen that I recall).
Goooood television.
EDIT: totally dressed!

"Balance of Terror" is by far one of the best Star Trek: Original Series episodes. It plays more-or-less like an excellent WWII submarine movie.
Other stand-out TOS episodes are... "Space Seed" (where we first meet Khan, as played by Ricardo Montalban); "City of the Edge of Forever" (where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy fall through a time portal to New York City in 1936, where Kirk falls in love with Joan Collins); and the "The Trouble with Tribbles", which shows off Shatner's dry comic ability.
One thing I love about the original Star Trek is how much of a period piece it is. The show was extremely progressive for the mid-1960s... yet its politics feel so out-of-date now.
Of course there are some true stinkers! I'm looking at you, "Spock's Brain," "The Alternative Factor," "The Omega Glory," and "Turnabout Intruder".

Thoughts?
(I agree that 'Master of Reality' should be at No. 1, personally)
I'm pretty much on board with everything, though my favorite Sabbath era was the Dio era. By far. Ozzie's vocals always reminded me of the neighbor's dog yelping in the night and were so annoying you wanted to leave the block.
And though the Dio/Iommi/Appice/Ward lineup from "Mob Rules" were called Heaven and Hell on the album released in 2009, it was as heavy as most anything Sabbath did and certainly carved its own place in the pantheon.
Yeah, Ozzy wasn't anything much as a singer, although I think his voice and style worked well with the band as it was in the early '70s.
His lyrics were very, very bad most of the time, too, even by normal HM standards.

So today was definitely a near snow-meggedon here in Morgantown, WV. We got at least 6 inches in under 3 hours. Fortunately the schools had already called for 2 hour delay...and then fully canceled. Unfortunately for me, I still had to go see ONE client (the other two had texted me/emailed me not to worry and that one or more of their respective spouses would be home for dog care.) So while I enjoyed romping around with a puppy in the snow (And BOY does she romp!) it was less thrilling driving through near frozen slush and still falling snow and having some stupid guys in truck barrel past me at break neck speeds on roads I doubt Iceman could traverse.
But in any case, today is my day to sit inside and enjoy warmth until it all melts away by Monday.
Stupid global warming ruining my winter wonderland...

"Balance of Terror" is so Great I think I saw it was in 1970 it didn't look dated then and now it doesn't look dated today.
"City on the Edge of Forever" is the same way. They are two of my five favorites of 0ST. The other series were all great for separate reasons, I have been a trek-key from WAY, WAY back.

You got our snow from Tuesday night. All my best wishes go out to you. Everybody in Alabama was relieved that it passed us by. I guess it landed on you. SORRY.

Santa Monkey is just a construct created by Gorilla Grodd and the Ultra-Humanite to encourage kids that letting telepathic simians in their homes and running their lives is cool.
Hey now! Little respect. You're talking about an astronaut...

I want cold fronts. I had two Mormons show up before noon. That and my neighbor below us called complaining about my dogs barking. Admittedly they are loud...but it wasn't like this was 5 or 6 pm. This was closer to 8:30. (Plus I brought them back in BEFORE he called. So there.)
Oh and we're finally killing a named NPC villain in Giantslayer.

Wow. Pretty intense. I got to see them open for KISS about 1997 or so. It was KISS' first tour back in the makeup. The Melvins played their hearts out but the sold-out crowd was there for the headliners.
It's interesting to me that, while both Kiss and the Grateful Dead (very different bands, of course) were phenomenally big in the US, neither of them really took off in the same way over here.

Vanykrye |

Never been a KISS fan. I was slightly intrigued growing up - my uncle was only about 12 years older than me, and when I stayed at Grandma and Grandpa's I'd sleep in his room. On the back of his bedroom door was a KISS poster. So yes, the bait was set. And then I heard the music and was simply unimpressed.
The Grateful Dead wasn't a band that I could appreciate at that age.

So far, my first Ohio Winter was not as bad as an average Florida Summer. Not by a long shot.
I've had plenty of chances to leave central New York State, but I actually like the weather around here. Usually.
(Last week's arctic blast wasn't fun: For four days, the high temperature didn't enter double digits.) But yesterday, the mercury hit 55F, and today is expected to do the same. I'm not ready for spring yet, and all the beautiful snow is melting!

I spent a winter living down in Florida ( my dad found out a fishing guide position opened up on the Withlacoochee River, Dad said let's move away from here {Indiana} so packed up the truck moved south.) That was 1977 it was a cold winter. they called us snowbirds but it can be colder without snow than with.
florida in my memory is the coldest of all 50 states.

Does anyone remember a Saturday morning TV series during the early 70's they used the hot rods from "Damnation Alley?" The apocalyptic Winnebagos from hell that were driven by Jan Micheal Vincent and George Peppard. Series was filmed near Manson"ville" {Spahn Ranch} out in the Calfornia desert.
What was it called?

Could you be thinking of Ark II (title/intro on Youtube)? The main vehicle, the Ark II, is frequently misremembered for the Landmaster from Damnation Alley. The show Ark II also featured a jet pack, the smaller Ark Roamer (which stored in the rear of the Ark II), and Robbie the Robot.

I for one welcome our new Monkey Santa overlords. And I'd like to point out that as a trusted media personality, I can be invaluable in rounding up others to toil in their underground banana caves.

Would bananas grow well underground? Might flying banana caves work better?
