Is there a guide to overcoming DR?

Advice

I know sone stuff like +3=cold iron...
Weapon versatility takes care of bludgeoning, slashing, piercing
Some classes or feats allow you to overcome alignment, e. g. smiting pali, celestial Bloodrager
For this there also are feats like weapon of the chosen

I'm sure there i a lot more,, please help me find it

Edit

Of course there is "deal more damage" especially power attack.
This is something I'd like to avoid. I look at finesse builds with low Str and try to avoid dipping two levels ranger/slayer to get power attack

Off the top of my head: weapon blanches, various spells (bless weapon, align weapon, versatile weapon), summon a shaitan genie to transmute a weapon to a different metal, be a steel breaker brawler or martial artist monk.

Black blade magi and (IIRC) phantom blade spiritualists can convert their damage into energy which gets around DR.

There's a lot more spells than Java Man names. Magic weapon, weapons against evil & heart of the metal that I remember. There's several which affect only the weapons the caster wields or their natural weapons too.

Eldritch claws is a feat for your animal companion. There's a couple for fighters at high levels whose names I forget. Clustered shots or pummeling style stack the damage from multiple hits so that DR only applies once/round to that character.

Can you narrow down what sort of character this is at all?

World serpent barbarian totem line gets you all alignments while raging.

Dipping one level of Urban Bloodrager (and taking some Extra Rage) allows for using a Furious weapon, which is basically a +1 to existing weapon bonus. You also, of course, get +4 to STR or DEX from Controlled Bloodrage. With the Celestial Bloodline, your attacks also automatically count as Good.

The best damage option for many DEX builds is to have a finesse two-handed with Power Attack.

Right now I have a dex melee with 5 classes at lvl 8 which gives a ton of goodies but no real mid level abilities.

My gosl would be to have a single class dex or cha based melee. If I can overcome "all" sorts of DR I think I could get away with not having power attack.

I'll definitely go for weapon versatility taking care of slashing, piercing and bludgeoning

Dipping one level Bloodrager or actually playing a Bloodrager for the celestial bloodline will let me overcome DR/good (we have houseruled that the Bloodrager gets the unchained rage from the UC barbarian)

Preferred options include Bloodrager, tw Fighter or Ranger (guide) with desna' shooting star and twf.

I could also see me going for a finesse samurai with 3 levels unchained rogue and two estocs either 2H or twf.

Right now the warrior poet is not on my preferred list as the challenge ability is nerfed too strongly for my taste.

The main thing would be cold iron, silver and adamantine. The higher level solution would be a +3 adamantine weapon costing ~21000 gp.

In the short term I don't think a quiver full of +1 weapons will do the trick as they'll cost me ~ 14000 gp.

Are there any feats or options in the preferred classes mentioned above that would cover DR special materials?

Are there any relevant types of DR I missed?

If all you are concerned with is those 2 metal types then heart of the metal will cover that. Casting it yourself is probably a bad idea. If there is another player you can encourage to cast it for you, that would be the easiest method to use. Not only can they cover your weapons, they can do their level in weapons. Unfortunately this spell really isn't suited for a wand due to the material component varying with which option is cast.

The second best method to obtain Heart of the Metal would be to take Leadership and pick a cohort that can cast it. I'd recommend either a witch, wizard or arcanist. Mainly something that your party doesn't already have. I wouldn't recommend a magus since they should be a front line kind of character. A Magus 2 levels behind everybody else without an equal share of treasure is just going to get themselves killed quickly.

An Elven Weapon Master Fighter can dual-wield rapiers or longswords with Elven Battle Focus and Effortless Dual Wield, plus bonuses from Weapon Training and Weapon Specialization. INT-to-damage works fine with TWF, unlike DEX. 4 levels is enough Weapon Master to get it all set up, and beyond that you can use whatever else you want, like Urban Bloodrage.

A strong DEX option that keeps solid secondary STR is to cross at least 2 levels of Scarred Rager with the Fighter's Trained Grace ability. Trained Grace gives a damage bonus for using STR for damage with Weapon Finesse. Scarred Rager 2 can cycle Rage every round when attacking, turning it off between rounds, so Reckless Abandon has no downside. Put together, you get the damage bonuses from Trained Grace, Rage STR and Furious weapon, plus the accuracy bonuses from Furious weapon and Reckless Abandon. Take Scarred Rager to 4, and you can use Lesser Elemental Rage as well.

Here are a few options.

Dip rage class for furious. Gets you further ahead in enhancement. This can be achieve without dipping on classes with bane. I have 6th level characters that have +5 weapons when needed by adding these features.

This brings me bane baldric which give you 5 round of bane a day on certain types of weapon.

If you are going Dex based there is no reason not to have a ranged weapon with arrows of different material and blanches including ghost salts.

Look for alternate class features like bombs or monk unarmed strikes.

There are Dex 'do more damage options' investigators and swashbucklers get big modifiers to damage. Especially if they grab piranha strike.

Spell options:

Blasting spells.

Weapon against evil.

Coin shot or pellet blast.

Versatile Weapon the spell helps.

Apus shining scales.

Magic weapon, magic fang.

Bristle (some people disagree on this one)

Many classes have access to a force weapon spell (also good for incorporeals) froce sword, instant weapon.

Feats: Pummeling style, cluster shot.

For some classes the answer is not how can I overcome this but what can I do instead. A wand of bladelash and a bloodrager dip add huge amount of back up versatility to a class. Knowing good animal shapes with trip and grab helps druids. Summoning something the energy weapons for a cleric.

Double weapons can have their different parts made of different materials so you could just two hand one side of a double axe or if you're feeling wild two levels of titan mauler lets you one hand a two handed weapon so you could carry two double axes with 4 different materials but only fight with one side of one of them at a time.

For the existing character a ring of sundering metals and an adamantine weapon are probably-affordable answers. If you're starting a new character at 8th a black blade magus is an easy answer, or if you feel like TWF then look at a fetchling unchained rogue (not multiclassed) with relevant rogue talents - from 10th you'll be able to convert all sneak attack damage to cold damage via improved shadow's chill, and you'll have useful tricks like aligned sneak attack, sever alignment and the basic shadow's chill now.

My favorite way is the Seraphic Pistol. If any one of your attacks gets through its DR, then the DR is shut down for everyone for 1 minute. And as a gun, getting different ammo to pierce DR with is easy.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

There's also the ten-ring sword, where you can switch DR type with rings of metal. Finessable for a Fighter or Swashbuckler.

I'd never heard of the ten ring sword before, that's super cool.
