What's your favorite Magus weapon?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

First, a disclaimer. I searched to see if this had come up before so don't flame me if it has. (I prefer necro over retread.)

As the subject title says, what's your favorite weapon to use with a Magus? Yes, I seen the scimitar brought up many a time for the obvious reason of the crit range. But in my experience, you still run up against the little problem of being an arcane caster in melee. Okay, you probably have a better AC and can take a penalty to your attack rolls to boost the check for casting defensively, but your gaining a chance for the spell to be successfully cast for a chance for the spell to fail to connect.

For me, things get fun with whips and the scorpion tail. I've never been one to chase the die-type (my halfling fighters often just roll over DR) and here we have a one-handed reach weapon. Spell combat at range? Yes, please and thank you, kindly. Yes, this is either a 3rd level or higher option or you are grabbing something like ancestral weapon with a half-elf, but (again, in my experience) I have found it to be well worth it. Particularly if you progress down the whip mastery feat line.

But does anyone else have a favored weapon for the magus that isn't a scimitar? (or staff for the Staff Magi, natch.)

I haven't seen these used often, but I like using the various spells that create weapons for temporary use (flame blade, gozreh's trident, river whip, whip of spiders, etc). Some of them take a little work to get on the Magus's spell list but I've found them useful. Some target touch AC by default and can be modified through Metamagic to do other types of damage. Spell combat = Conjure Weapon + Enhance Weapon (Arcane pool) + Strike with Weapon. It's not as efficient as HAVING a steady weapon, but you do save money.

Heavy pick for my hexcrafter, whip for my debuffer.

For the eldritch archer magus a gun is the ideal weapon despite the name, and kensai might well go with a katana for the style value. Particularly if there's a house rule to allow slashing/other grace feats to work with spell combat.

If you want reach the long arm spell does exist and I've seen it used to good effect. Albeit with a scimitar-wielding magus.

I started a thread talking about guns and casters a while back. A magus with an Eldritch Archer build using a gun with a one level dip into Spellslinger turned out to be a surprisingly good ranged character. For the cost of 2 resources you could do a 10 round combat without casting spells and do respectable damage for the entire time. Casting spells just ups your potential damage at a reasonable cost of decreasing your accuracy. Using a musket you can sit 80' away and just unload.

Waveblade for melee.

Heavy flail for my orc magus because a flaming flail looks cool.

Falcata and wand wielder is how I built the magus I have. Spam true strike and almost never miss.

Thinking of building a Taldan falcata wielding magus.

I used a series of spell storing lances to great effect with my grave knight magus.
