Mr. Grogg |
My players are about to go into Grazuul's lair and (hopefully) figure out how to operate the dam.
At that point, I can easily see them calling their job done and heading home.
They've shown no real interest in Lamatar, so getting them into The Haunted Heart will be contrived, at best. Thankfully, The Haunted Heart doesn't really seem important to the story at all.
More problematically, though, I see no motivator to get them into Harrowing the Hook. Even if they decide to figure out who sent the ogres to destroy the dam, I see no clues in the AP that would tell them to climb a ten thousand foot mountain.
"Now that the dam is fixed, let's randomly go mountain climbing for no reason in the pouring rain and falling snow!"
What am I missing?

Hook mountain is the home turf of the Kreeg ogres. Some knowledge checks, or tips from the rangers can reveal that. With that information they might go there to recover loot that the ogres packed home from Ranneck, rescue survivors that were hauled off, get revenge/stop. e ogres from doing it again...

Hmmm, what have the pc's accomplished so far?
Did they clear Yannick? Did they kill Lucretia or did she escape?
Did they encounter Yap, the pixie who pleads with them to help his mistress?
Did any of the Black Arrows survive? They should not only tell the pc's where the Kreeg clan hold is exactly but should be exceptionally motivated to do something to bring an end to the Kreeg menace once and for all.
Did the pc's find Lamatar's notes in the commander's quarters in Yannick - that should suggest the fort's commander may have survived. Again, surviving Black Arrows should be passionate about any investigating any such possibility.
Keep in mind - if they don't go to the clan hold, they won't get the clue that drives them back to Sandpoint to stop the Stone Giant raid.

I skipped both of these sections of the adventure. All of the Black Arrows managed to die, and the PCs were only vaguely aware of Lamatar Bayden.
So, instead:
- With a single day's warning, the PCs got to prepare Fort Rannick to defend against the entire contents of the Kreeg Clanhold, including an enormous Rune Giant Zombie animated courtesy of the hag coven and that oh-so-convenient ongoing Gentle Repose effect on his gigantic sihedron medallion.
- The only one I left out was Lamatar Bayden. I have plans for him to show up later, doing Bad Stuff somewhere near the beginning of Book 6. Svevenka, who has heard about the PCs from her cousin Myrianna, is going to ask them to go investigate the Frost King who recently established himself nearby.
