Scarab Sages

Incredible Hulk - Werewolf by Night showed up. No mention of Hulk’s appearance in the WbN book, but that doesn’t surprise me. I was a bit disappointed they didn’t do a back story on the new monster-of-the-month Vârcolac. Those have been some of the best parts of this series.

Batman: Dark Patterns - new six issue series. I picked it up because (a) it looked interesting, and (b) I enjoyed Dan Watters work on that Arkham City miniseries. It was a solid first issue. Good story set in Batman’s early years. Solid art. DC continues to put out some great Batman miniseries.

Conan the Barbarian - shifting gears from the Black Stone story, now we go back to Conan’s time with Bêlit as Amra the Lion. This story will involve Stygians, so it should be fun. The artist is new, but not too shabby - some chick named Danica Brine. Her Bêlit is beautiful, and her city backgrounds are impressive.

Scarab Sages

New Gods - I’m not sure I’ve ever read anything by Ram V. At least nothing ongoing. I know his name, though. And I love New Gods (despite what that douchenozzle Tom King tried to do to them). So this was a pretty decent start. Very interesting initial layout, with solid writing. The art was pretty damned good, as well. The only thing I’m not crazy about so far is the new look for Orion’s helmet. It’s not bad, I just didn’t think there was anything wrong with the old version.

Immortal Thor - supervillains vs Asgardian gods. I’ll put my money on the gods. I’m not familiar with whatever story they had wit evil Thor and Magni. I’m liking Magni so far, though. This continues to be interesting, if a bit dragging.

The Rocketfellers - This series has small hints of preachiness, which are childish and annoying. The overall story that’s being built is intriguing, however. So far, anyway. And the art is great. And there’s a hint at a link between all the Ghost Machine books. I look forward to more of this.

Savage Sword of Conan - this issue saw the completion of Jason Aaron’s story (thankfully). It was okay, but Zub’s work is far superior. There was also a prose follow-up to The Frosy Giant’s Daughter that gave me a kind of Lovecraftian vibe. And lastly there was a Dark Agnes story. It was okay, but Agnes deserves better.

The reference to Magni's timeline comes from the Dan Jurgen's run on Thor. (This was after Heroes Reborn/Return saga). In it, Thor lost his humanity due to some writer's stuff. (He also killed his human host). Odin had passed away and Thor got the All Power from him. He then tried to basically take over the world and ended up unworthy but still had his Odinforce powers.

We'll see if the prophecy about Thor's demise comes true or not.

I loved the Reigning aka Thor, Lord of Asgard, later Thor, Lord of Earth.

It was good, but I mostly like the Dark Gods that Jurgen's showed us.

Scarab Sages

Hellhunters - I picked this up mostly on a whim. The premise sounded interesting, and it had what looked to be that’s WWII Ghost Rider from the Hulk comic. I liked that dude. Anyway, solid art, and the story is decent so far. I’m not a huge fan of that retconned WWII disciple of the Ancient One. And I don’t think he or Peggy should be Howling Commandos. Still, this could be pretty cool.

Metamorpho - this was very…..weird. It gave me a very 60s vibe with the dialogue. Not unpleasant, just weird. Java was presented as unusually intelligent. Simon Stagg was present as far less sinister than he usually is (though it wouldn’t surprise me if he was the ultimate villain). The original Element Girl is in this. I thought they let Neil Gaiman kill her off years ago? Anyway, this should be a fun little miniseries. The art is pretty decent.

Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham - I had forgotten about this series. This newest issue got even weirder. Didn’t think that was possible.

Moon Knight - I find myself less and less thrilled with this newest series. Not liking the new villains. And the ease with which they frame Moon Knight and company is, to put it bluntly, pretty damned stupid. Yeah, because other heroes are going to think a few Ex-Avengers who regularly play hero are suddenly a vicious drug cartel. The least they could have done is write in a believable frame-up job. Instead of just saying it. Hopefully this’ll get better.

Redcoat - the immortal relcutant hero, who’s still kind of a tool, returns. And this little one-off issue has him face off against a family of serial killers in 1870s Kansas. It’s nice to see Johns is among the small number of writers who are capable of doing a one issue story. And they throw in a few setups for future stuff as well.

Geiger - picking up from last issue, Geiger had to defend the town he and his buddy found from the Las Vegas psychos who once again tracked them down. It doesn’t end pretty. And there’s a hint that Nate the Nuclear Knight might have some problems down the line. And more of the wider conspiracy against Geiger. Including a bandage-wrapped president, and Junk Yard Joe.

Batman: The Last Halloween - this was a solid issue, focusing mostly on Robin, with he and Alfred trying to save Batman’s life from a gunshot wound. Clift Chiang does the art for this issue. It was really good. I especially liked his Solomon Grundy. I’m still not sure where this story is going; it’s a very slow burn. I love being along for the ride, though, as it’s clearly a way to honor Tim Sale. And it’s succeeding.

Scarab Sages

Daredevil - I had still been collecting Daredevil, hoping Ahmed would end this story arc. It’s still going though, and it’s gotten boring enough I just don’t even care to read it anymore. So next time I’m in the store I’ll tell them to cancel it from my box. And now I’m really feeling I made the right choice to not get his Wolverine book. His writing just…..sucks.

Creeping Below - it too forever for this second issue. Azarello has, I think, told better stories, but this one still has me intrigued. I’ll give it another few issues to see where he’s going. The lead character was sacrificed in the first issue, and now she’s woken up 7 years later. With some….abilities.

Hello Darkness - some interesting stories in this one. Steve Orlando wrote something decent, which surprised me. Same with Justina Ireland, but hers was only half-way decent. The best story of the issue, for me, was one by someone named Sas Milledge. Solid, simple story. Good art. The Nuclear War aftermath story by Ennis continued. Kind of boring. There was also a really cool pinup of Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad (Were)Wolf by Gabriel Rodriguez. Plus the usual one page by someone named Hack.

Batman: Full Moon - Good story. Phenomenal art. I love this version of Man-Bat. And it’s always nice to see Zatanna. Honestly, though, as much as I’ve liked some of Constantine’s past appearances over the years, I just no longer see the appeal of the character. He’s not compelling enough to justify this much attention. Still, I’d recommend this to anyone who likes a good Batman gets mixed up in magic story.

Werewolf by Night - I wasn’t too keen on this new dark priestess Dorgana character, but reading her all-to-appropriate reference to The Hood as a “feeble hoodlum”, makes me like her a bit more. Still, I was wondering why she’d bring in Lilith. I thought she was an Elder Demon like Cthon, but maybe I’m misremembering. Anyway, it’s good to see a real villain leading the bad guys. It also looks like they’re trying to make Jake Gomez interesting. We’ll see if that works. Finally, poor Elsa. That had to hurt. Right between the boobs.

JSA - Cool, they brought in the Demons Three. Haven’t seen them in awhile. And what looks to be a new Kid Eternity - a ghost chick. And woot! Khalid got a chance to kick some butt, however briefly. It’s good to see. I really liked that character, and I’ve been glad to see them keep him as Doctor Fate. I only wish he could get his own series, but I’d also be afraid to see who they let write it.

Scarab Sages

I also picked up Volume 3 of the Micronauts Omnibus. As well as the DC/Marvel Amalgam Omnibus.

Scarab Sages

I just saw a post by Kelley Jones that his fellow comic creator, Steve Seagle, lost his home in the fires out in California. That’s sad.

Scarab Sages

Nemesis: Rogues’ Gallery - this was the final issue of the latest anti-Batman story. It was fun, but I honestly think it’s getting a bit repetitive, and that the dude just can’t lose. Maybe that’s the point, though. And I get the feeling Millar really dislikes even the idea of people having more money than God. The next series, the character will apparently try to take over the world. I’m sure he’ll succeed.

The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Grey and the Last Battle for England - the second issue was very Gruagach centric. It was cool. He’s the champion for Morgan Le Fey. Ed Grey, now the Green Man, is the champion for Queen Alice. There’s a fight, and a cliffhanger.

Batman: Dark Patterns - This is a solid story, with really good art. It feels like a Batman story I might have read 20 years ago. The (so far) lead villain is creepy, but they clearly want you to have some sympathy for him. He’s definitely a villain made by others. If anyone enjoys a good Batman story, I’d recommend this.

Geiger - They’ve been searching for another Glowing Man, someone supposedly cured. Which Geiger needs, as his power seems to be going out of control. Turns out, the other Glowing Man looks to be a Glowing Woman. Interesting. Also, Junkyard Joe showed up. I like him. He’s the quiet type, but in a good way. This series is an entertaining read, along with most of the other Ghost Machine books.

Scarab Sages

I see in the news that Diamond Comics Distributors filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy today. Can’t say I’m surprised. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects the industry, both immediately and in the long term.

Edit: apparently at least one competitor, Universal Distribution is already making moves to acquire pieces of Diamond.

Scarab Sages

I was asking the dude at my comic book store about how the Diamond bankruptcy might affect them. He said not much, since the store had only been getting a handful of things from them.

The only big concern for me is that Titan is still shipping through them. So unless Titan can move to someone else, my book from them might get delayed.

Scarab Sages

I neglected to mention - my total at the comic book store, including the Vampirella issue was a very appropriately devilish number.

Scarab Sages

Incredible Hulk - Hulk battles another monster child of the big bad demon thing no one ever heard of before. Yawn. I think I’m finally ready to call it quits on this title. So boring.

Thor - some time spent in Asgard, laying down stuff for future story direction. Lots of different artists. Some were good. Some were horrid. Most were mid. Probably one of the better books that Marvel is putting out.

New Gods - it looks like we’re going the route of creatures from some kind of anti-Source versus the Jack Kirby New Gods. It’s very intriguing, though I don’t think a New Gods title without one of the main New Gods, Darkseid, can truly be considered worthy of the name. Still, kudos for trying to do something different. Still, I doubt Ram V is good enough to come up with a villain better than Darkseid.

Shadow of the Golden Crane - I can always enjoy a good Hellboy story. It looks like Hellboy and company will be tracking down artifacts once collected by a pre-BPRD, pre-commie China organization. Could be cool.

Scarab Sages

Metamorpho - This one continues to be weird, but kind of fun. Sapphire Stag is an internet pop star. Java is actually not a complete idiot (and apparently knows Vandal Savage). Simon Stagg is still a villain, but he comes across less evil and more completely amoral in his pursuit of big business success. The kind of caricature of a so-called "captain of industry" you'd expect from a creative type who is completely incapable of that kind of success. Steve Lieber keeps his art simple, but it fits the writing so far.

Hyde Street - This is another kick ass series from the Ghost Machine imprint over at Image. This is a little late on the Christmas theme, but it's still fun. And we get introduced to another of the damned inhabiting Hyde Street. This is a kind of Frankenstein's Monster who's more interested in saving souls than damning them. The complete opposite of Pranky the evil scout kid. The art by Ivan Reis is fantastic.

Magic Order 5 - We get to see the origin of one of the "good" wizards. How he made a pact with three demons (I thought it was a nice homage to DC's Demons Three), letting them inhabit his body. They make him do terrible things, but he slowly gains the upper hand and apparently learns to control them. Meanwhile, the leader of the Order, Cordelia Moonstone, is waiting to die. And some big bads are planning to unleash ancient gods on all creation. Cool.

Scarab Sages

Sweet! Got my pre-order in for the newest Rippaverse book - The Great War of Separation. Chuck Dixon as writer. Jack Herbert as artist. From what little they've hinted at, in this comic universe the USA has split, with at least Texas being its own nation again. They've also hinted it was a war triggered by the emergence of the Excepts (Rippaverse version of metahumans).

Should be interesting. And a quick turn-around. The book will be shipping by March.

So far the Rippaverse is a RippaBUST.

Scarab Sages

New books this week, though a few less than I initially expected. I think part of that is small publishing woes. Another part might be the whole Diamond thing. Who knows? Anyway……

Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution - The bad guys made a move to end the good guys, but old April had some shenanigans up her sleeve. And they brought back Professor Honeycutt. The new turtles are starting to come into their own as well. They’ve got additional powers. They’re getting better in fights. Overall, it’s a fun little book.

Hello Darkness - this was a kind of Valentine’s themed issue. If As much as blood, guts, and things that go bump in the night can be associated with love. All the stories were pretty solid. Some of the art was less than solid, but I didn’t think any of it was terrible.

Hellhunters - So, whatever is possessing the Nazi villains is some cold-related demon. And Zarathos has a grudge against it. Hence this Ghost Rider. What’s more, whatever the demon Nazis kill, they can posses and turn into demon soldiers. And that’s how Logan ends up involved - when they killed his squad. I think they’re planning on bringing in Bucky as well.

Nightclub 2 - Evil high school bully vampires? Maybe someone’s working through issues? Anyway, the girl hero vampire, Amy, resurrects her buddies in the old Hammer way - by soaking their remains in blood. Lots of blood. Things are building to a head as the hero vamps get ready for a final showdown with their highschool nemesis and his vampire cronies. Should be fun. And they may have dropped a little something to set up a third volume.

Red Coat - This was a cool issue. It guest started a mortal, but still magical Johnny Appleseed. His friendship with Simon Pure is odd, but oddly cool. They give a date for his death, years after this issue’s story, but hint there’s more to it. Cool. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him. And next issue will have Annie Oakley. I really like Johns’ creativity with the Ghost Machine America.

Moon Knight - He’s down, but not out. There was some nice conversation between Marc, Jake, and Steven (the accurate personality versions, not that MCU swill). There was a lot of blood and violence. A lot of Vermin (I don’t recall how that happened). And there’s the promise of even more violence. Should be good. And they had a new artist. Some dude I’m not familiar with named Devmalya Pramanik. Some similarities with Cappuccio’s art, but enough to be different. Not bad, but maybe not as good. He does good with the cape though.

Scarab Sages

Frankenstein New World: The Sea of Forever - I get the feeling I missed some other series with this character. I saw it was coming out this week, and Mignola’s name was attached, so I bought it. Frank is traveling with some young girl in what I think is the far future Earth. Something bad is pursuing them, and wants the energy powering Frank and the girl. Solid writing. Decent art.

The Rocketfellers - Tomasi is taking his own sweet time unfolding this particular story. I’m hoping it doesn’t drag too much. I’ll keep going with it for now, but if he continues to drag things out too slowly, I’ll drop the title.

JSA - Retconned Doctor Midnight’s capture gives us a nice peek behind the curtain of what the Injustice Society is planning. And it’s clearly something huge. And we finally get a chance to see where Obsidian has been kept. Despite this slow pace, I’m really liking seeing the JSA mostly back to normal. Minus, of course, RDM and some of those other idiotic additions from that other idiotic retconning. And the art is really good.

KC Carlson, Legion Of Super-Heroes Editor, Dies Aged 68

Sad to hear. Rest in peace.

Scarab Sages

I was today years old when I learned of the existence of the character Galacta, "daughter of Galactus". At first, I was surprised anyone could have that much hatred for true comic book fans as to create such an idiotic, nonsense character. Then I recalled what kind of people are in charge these days.

Scarab Sages

Still, I understand she's primarily showing up in that Marvel Rivals video game. And from everything else I hear that game is a big hit. I don't think it's the style of game I'd like to play, however, so I don't see myself ever getting it.

I remember Galacta. She was okay.

Also, the New Ultimate Line is STILL fing baller. Especially 6160 Luke Cage.

Scarab Sages

Finally got off my ass and ordered wall mounts for some of my older, classic, more expensive comics. Now I'm going to check and see if I can get some UV sleeves or frames for them. Especially the Silver Age stuff.

Scarab Sages

Regarding UV frames - Amazon had some available, but I didn’t find any l liked for Silver Age. Luckily, I recalled seeing something like that at my comic store, so I was able to pick one up when I was there today.

Just one for now. I’ll see how I like it. If I do, I’ll get several more.

Scarab Sages

Moon Knight - I’m still enjoying Hunter’s Moon, but it was nice to see Doctor Badr again, and actually being a doctor. It was also nice seeing Tigra in action. The vampires I keep hoping meet their ends. They’re both annoying. Meanwhile, I like the twist with Fairchild. Just a farm boy…..from Asgard.

Thor - one thing I’ve enjoyed about this run (modern Loki notwithstanding) is that it reads like mythology. The language dialogue and narration are all well done. I think that helps the story not drag as much as it should be dragging. I think that “storm breakers” stuff is hokey, but Bazaldua’s art is quality stuff.

Batman: Dark Patterns - issue three sees an end to the first story arc. That surprised me, but pleasantly so. The secret origin of the Wounded Man comes to light. It’s a story with a classic comic vibe to it. And the bad guy mostly gets away with it, to bad guy another day. I look forward to the next story arc.

Geiger - and finally we get to me the other glowing man. Only it’s a Glowing Woman. And she’s learned to control her power. Interesting. And it looks like we’re going to see more of Junkyard Joe. I’ve never read his initial story (though I plan to), but I wouldn’t mind seeing him have a new series.

Scarab Sages

The DC preview magazine showed up this week, and I actually found some stuff in it I want to get. Was not expecting that. So now I’ll add three things to my box:

Cosmic Odyssey: The Deluxe Edition
The DC Universe by Steve Ditko Ommibus
The Spectre: The Wrath of the Spectre Omnibus

Scarab Sages

I’m especially interested in the Ditko Omnibus. I think DC has put out some great collections honoring various writers and artists. So far I’ve got collections for Dwayne McDuffie, Len Wein, John Byrne, Neal Adams, Mike Mignola, Joe Kubert, Carmine Infantino, and Doug Mahnke.

Scarab Sages

I also had the 5th and final volume of the Den stories waiting for me today. I look forward to reading that one.

I love this arc of Thor that's now started, especially since it helps bring it back from all the other runs before Al took over. This especially so. I can't wait for the next issue.

Scarab Sages

Since the Den series has finished up, and the next collection in the Corben Library has yet to be published, I went ahead and ordered a previously published book in the series that I had missed earlier. It's called Murky World. I look forward to reading it.

At the same time, Manly Wade Wellman had been lurking in my brain, so I ordered the already existing Phantom Stranger Omnibus, of which he's a contributing writer. Plus, Phantom Stranger is cool.

Scarab Sages

“X-Men ’97 and that LEGO X-Mansion are based on the X-Men of a particular era—an era that fans were very vocally afraid things would be shifting back to when the progressive Krakoa era had run its course. But the purpose of Marvel Publishing is to be out in front, the tip of the spear, generating new ideas and new stories that can serve as creative fodder for eventual film and animation development.”

That's a quote from Tom Brevoort in a recent interview. It seems he's saying the comics solely exist to serve as a content farm for TV shows and movies (and likely video games as well). Sad, but I think it's probably true.

Which means they have to try and appeal to people who aren't necessarily fans of the various comic characters. Which means real fans have a higher chance of seeing stupid things done with a character they enjoy.

And it's not necessarily anyone's fault. It seems to just be the way the industry evolved. At least a larger portion of it, anyway. We've still got a lot of great indie creators out there.

Thor and Moon Knight are going strong. So are the Avengers. Plus if you're not a fan of current 616, 6160 is pretty awesome.

Scarab Sages

Slow week.

Werewolf by Night - the story is still dragging, but at least they have a proper villain leading the bad guys. Though why Lilith would make herself subservient to Cthon is beyond me. Unless maybe they’re planning to make her related to Cthon. Maybe a daughter. Anyway, hopefully the writer will get to some kind of point sometime soon.

New Gods - this series has been not entirely what I was expecting, but it’s still be fun so far. I kind of like the way he’s building on what’s gone before. Still, Ram V is no Kirby. At least he’s not going straight to Darkseid. As much as I love that villain, it’s nice to see a new one for a change. And it was nice to see
Oberon again. There were two artists. Neither was bad, but I think I liked Riccardo Federici’s work better.

Scarab Sages

I also picked up the new Deluxe Hardcover of Junkyard Joe by Geoff Johns. I’d been seeing it advertised in the various Ghost Machine books, and was contemplating buying it off Amazon, but then saw this copy on the shelf. It was density.

Scarab Sages

I saw news that at least two of the new X-books have already been cancelled. There’s a shock.

I also saw the news they aren’t finished trying to ruin the X-books, and have now decided to stuff Kamala Khan into all the past big X-stories through some kind of time travel crap. It’s like they’re actively trying to make the X-line worthless.

At least I can look forward to Claremont’s next miniseries.

Scarab Sages

I did hear some news that piqued my interest. Apparently, DC and Marvel are planning a new crossover. The video that mentioned it says the last one was something like 20 years ago. Not sure which that was, since Amalgam was closer to 30 years ago.

Anyway, depending on who’s writing it, a new crossover could be extremely cool, or monumentally horrific. I’ll be interested to find out more.

Scarab Sages

Damn! I’ve been buying a bunch of omnibuses, collected editions, and other assorted graphic novels over the last year or so. Finally got around to getting them all on shelves. They’re somewhat organized, but that definitely needs work.

Had to (finally) move the last of my Pathfinder books away to a dark, out of the way corner upstairs. Got my daughter to help. I really need to get rid of that crap.

Firstly,

Kamala time traveling ISN'T as bad as the fact they're bringing back Gwen Stacy to be 90s Deadpool type thing.

SECONDLY!!, the most recent issue of Incredible Hulk FING RULES!!

Thirdly, NYX being canceled sucks. They should have just canceled X-Factor.

Fourthly,

Ram is WAY better than Kirby. I know people revere him, but Kirby isn't perfect. Ram is doing a great job with New Gods.

Scarab Sages

I was surprised by my delivery of Bloodruth #1 waiting on my doorstep this morning. I was hoping FedEx would prove more efficient than UPS or the USPS, but I wasn't so sure.

So now I've got more reading material for later today. Huzzah!

Scarab Sages

I will say, I was proud of myself yesterday for getting out of the comic book store for just over $100. Rookie numbers, sure. It's a good idea to not spend hundreds of dollars every week, though.

Besides, the storage issues are madness inducing.

Oh, good. I was hoping someone would care enough to look it up for me.

Scarab Sages

Even though I picked up my new books Friday, I haven’t had a chance to read them until today.

Metamorpho - this miniseries continues to be really weird. I think it’s kind of reminding me of the 60s Batman TV show. A little campy on the dialogue, but otherwise a fun read. I don’t recall ever seeing anything about Java and Vandal Savage being enemies, but it does kind of make sense.

Hellhunters - so now we have an origin for the main villains. Demonic elementals, but ones that are kind of peeved at the Devil (whichever one they go with). And, damn! They’re writing Bucky as kind of a creepy little psycho. I have my suspicions why that is, but it could just be they thought it’d be cool. I really liked the cover art on this issue.

Batman: The Last Halloween - Bill Sienkiewicz provided the art on this issue. It was, of course, fantastic. The Time Sale Joker cover was phenomenal. I’m still not sure where they’re going with the story on this one, but having the Joker play vigilante rounding up Arkham strays was kind of fun.

Night Club 2 - this was the finale of volume 2, and what a finale it was. The heroes, badly outnumbered, use their brains to set a trap that evens the odds big time. And we’re left with a kind of happy ending, plus a nice setup for volume 3 (which probably everyone saw coming).

The Magic Order 5 - one more issue to go, and we finally get to see the prophecy of Cordelia’s death come true. Of course, it’s got a nice twist. Simple, yet elegant. Oftentimes that works best. Now they’ve just got to put a stop to an invasion my some elderly dark gods.

Conan the Barbarian - this one was sadly delayed a bit (I think from the whole Diamon fiasco), but it was worth the wait. Zub’s writing on this series has been excellent. Seeing Bêlit is always enjoyable. Although the art could have been better. And I got one of the not great covers. It looks like they’re setting up for some Thoth Amon action

Scarab Sages

Sweet! Just got a delivery from Amazon - The Phantom Stranger Omnibus. It's over 1200 pages of comic goodness. Some of those early stories were written by Manly Wade Wellman. I was actually looking up stuff about him when I discovered the existence of the omnibus and ordered it.

Scarab Sages

Among my new comics for the week were new printings of stuff I’ve never read, but had to get.

First there was Daredevil: Yellow by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I loved Hulk Grey. So when I heard they were reprinting this, I had to pick up a copy.

Second up is my hardcover copy of The Collected Will Eisner’s John Law. Titan put this out. Since it’s Eisner, I had to own it.

Incidentally, while Kirby has for a long time been number 1 on my list of all-time great comic creators (rightly so, of course), Eisner was definitely in the top five. Now the more I read of Eisner’s work, the more inclined I am to maybe move him into that #1 spot. I’d have to really think hard about some of those other spots. Ditko, maybe. Len Wein. Stan Lee? Perhaps Bill Finger. So many good names to choose.

Scarab Sages

The Herculoids - I picked this first issue up mostly for nostalgia. I remember enjoying the old Herculoids cartoons when I was a kid. Those cartoons made the Herculoids seem more...heroic. Or maybe just that the villains were written as villains. This comic had the "villains" come across mostly as just dudes looking to make money. Maybe not perfect, but certainly not evil. The Herculoids, on the other hand, come across as a bit murder happy. I probably won't bother with another issue.

Hello Darkness - most of the stories were decent. One of them had really crap art, the kind that would shame a 5 year old. Garth Ennis finally finished up his nuclear war survival horror. Overall, it sucked. Which was kind of sad to see. I expected better of him.

Immortal Thor - the fight between Thor and Executioner was pretty cool. The resolution to the fight was just as cool. It'll be interesting to see how they finish this series up. Not sure how many more are left in the run, but I imagine at least 9. That would get to an even 30 issues. Sounds about in the ball park these days.

Moon Knight - The one on one between Khonsu and Moon Knight was cool, but feels like it's been done before. How many times can they have this conversation? Hunter's Moon is still one of my favorites from this modern Moon Knight. The art was solid. Hopefully, this Fairchild story can finish up soon. He's an interesting character, though.

Batman: Full Moon - Good conclusion to this story, even if the last issue really wasn't much of a Batman story. The art was really cool. I wouldn't mind seeing more from this creative team. There's plenty of other horror properties they could touch.

JSA - I recall the Demons Three being pretty badass at one point. Seems they've lost a step or two if just the Hawkpeople can take them. Not too keen on this new Kid Eternity. Why not just bring back the original? I'm also still not too keen on this new Doctor Midnight (not sure where the last one went), but I did enjoy seeing her take down Savage's daughter, whom I dislike. I'm guessing it's magic that has so much of the team acting out of sorts. I remember Jade being more badass and less doubting and fearful.

Hyde Street - This issue introduced another of the denizens of Hyde Street. He's the Matinee Monster, a damned movie actor in monster make-up (with some further, rather painful alterations by the mysterious Scorekeeper). This one is quite insistent on defying the powers of darkness. Not only does he not work to deliver souls, he actively tries to help redeem them. And he's got another of the denizens locked up. Very interesting.

Savage Sword of Conan - Another great issue. This one had a cool story by the great Roy Thomas, one apparently inspired by a Rudyard Kipling story (I'll have to try and figure out which one). There was a shorter, back up story featuring REH's mountain man, Breckenridge Elkins. And there were some really cool pinups.

I think Immortal Thor will run for at least 50 issues. That's always been where Al tends to land.

Also EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE ULTIMATES #10!! Best issue and best Invaders issue too!

Scarab Sages

Just finished reading that new edition of Daredevil: Yellow I picked up the other day. That’s the second of Loeb and Sale’s color series I’ve read (the other being Hulk: Grey), and I was just as impressed with this one. This seemed as much a love letter to Karen Page as Daredevil. The writing was top notch. The art was stellar.

Now I’ve got to get my hands on the other two series.

I was much younger lad when those first three series came out (very late 20s to early 30s), and mid 30s when the Captain America series was done. I’m pretty sure I was collecting some Marvel at the time (my weekly stack of books was typically at least 10 or more), so I’m not sure why I didn’t pick them up at the time. I regret that.

Scarab Sages

Woot! I went ahead and ordered the Loeb and Sale’s Superman For All Seasons book off Amazon yesterday and it already arrived! I look forward to reading it.
