I'm currently trying to build a Bard character, and I really, really want him to just use his weapon like a club and bash people over the head with it. Is there a way to do this without having to take the improvised weapon-centric feats and traits? I want this to be his main weapon of choice, I'm just not sure how to go about making it happen.

Only way, other than the improvised weapon stuff.
would bea custom magic item, similiar to the various rods and other things that say "when wielded it acts as a etcetc weapon"
so not for a pfs thing.. but if its a home game see if your gm would allow that sorta thing I suppose?
maybe someone more skilled will come along with a better idea though.
I have not looked in about 3-4 years since I tried to make a combat flute user ala Illusion of Gaia

There are rules for making custom weapons in the wmh.
Consider a flail with channels cut into the heads that make different noises swung at different speeds (these have actually existed and been used in war, apparently)
A shortsword forged around a tube that can be used as a flute
There are already existing ingame weapons that are similar, like the mace-censer that splashes out holywater when swung or jarred violently.
or daggers designed to secrete contact poisons along channels also.
idk if it's possible to make a custom lute out of metal? plausibly, i'd imagine it wouldn't sound the same as a generic lute, but eh, doesn't need to.
perhaps your lutes neck is constructed with a crossbow-like mechanism that you 'fire' (swift action) to slacken the strings so they don't break. heh, xbow-fingerboard-axe, think that might require an exotic proficiency :)
Maybe suggest a fingerboard instrument w/o the hollow chamber? much more wieldy and no hollow spaces to detract from the items sturdiness. like a gittler or stick guitar.
//Not rules, but..
You've no doubt seen guys on stage hitting things with guitars before now, right? It tends to be the guitar that breaks first.. normally on the first try.
Hit somebody on the head with a guitar and 99 times out a 100 it's a headache they've got and a broken guitar you've got.//

I was thinking of having it be enchanted so that it wouldn't break. I'm not big on having it turn into a weapon or anything like that, I just want him to brain somebody with his lute because that's hilarious to me. But I did give him a short bow in the event that the lute thing doesn't work out for whatever reason.
Should be mentioned that I'm not trying to make a serious character here. He's absolutely off the wall ridiculous in every sense of the word.

Tuned Bowstring + bow = masterwork stringed instrument.
Musical Staff = "In addition, as a swift action, the wielder of the musical staff can cause it to transform into a string or wind instrument." "The staff can still be used to cast spells while it is an instrument, and it can revert back to a staff as a free action."
Totem spear = "In addition to its use as a weapon, a totem spear can be played using the Perform (wind instrument) skill."

A lute could be a club with the fragile condition. But your guy had better have a crate of backup lutes, as using it to hit someone isn't going to prolong its longevity.
IMHO, you wouldn't have to use the improvised weapons rules, as a club is already about as basic as you can get.

Summon Instrument is a cantrip, so you can keep creating lutes as fast as you smash them. You may not be very effective in combat (doing 1d4 every other round) but it meets the requirement.
You could vary it, of course. A trombone, a tuba, a pair of cymbals, a double bass or a xylophone would add some variety. A didgeridoo would make a decent cudgel. An alpenhorn would have Reach.

As noted above, Weapon Master's Handbook carries rules for creating new weapons.
Tool (0 DP): The weapon can also serve as a specific mundane tool. Add triple the price and double the weight of the tool to the weapon’s final price and weight.
Check with your DM, but as this is has no change in the weapon's power, merely adding triple the item's cost to the base weapon, it should be suitable to add to any existing weapon and 'reskin' it as a war lute.

Thank you! That's pretty much exactly what I needed. I appreciate all the help from everyone who contributed!
