making a spring attack worth the while.

Advice

i love spring attacking.
i want to dash in and out combining with hide in plain sight.

now.... spring attacking sucks. especially when no Hurtful is allowed.

so, what classes \ builds \ options are there to make it worth the while, at least most of the time - almost comparable with non haste melee.

Won't be alot of hiding but I think the horselord cavalier seems like it would be fun to play.

well, if human - than large mount make it impossible to hide.

if small, it is indeed a great character - passed level 9. '
dex focus scimitar halfing.
but i prefer a mount less option.

Rogue, unRogue, and even Ninja can all grab the Scout archetype. At 8th level it synergizes perfectly with Spring Attack by giving you Sneak Attack whenever you move more than 10ft before attacking.

Yeah, it's pretty great for a rogue. If you use Spring Attack for single attacks and re-stealth via HiPS every round, you won't even need the scout archetype. For that approach, I'd go with unchained rogue, elven curve blade, power attack and furious focus. Add 3 levels of fighter (weapon master) with gloves of dueling if you want more attack and damage (or even a 4th level for weapon specialization).

I personally prefer using it to attack once, then use the rest of the movement to get into flanking position for sneak full attacks starting next round. I played a halfling UnRougue like that for a short time and it was a nice way to set up many dual dagger sneak attacks.

EDIT: Another (weird) idea I just had: Shadow Bloodline Sorcerers get HiPS at level 9. Could even be level 5 if you get your hands on Robes of Arcane Heritage. You could either combine it with melee touch attacks or go for a polymorph/melee-build. A spring attacking Ankylosaurus that hides in the shadow each round sound hilarious.

Scout doesn't work with this. scout level 8 works with the attack action after moving.
"whenever a scout moves more than 10 feet in a round and makes an attack action"

So it's limited by what vital strike can do. Thus no scout damage on spring attack.

But I did see a build for Unchained rogue that was all about this and having some big debuffs with your debilitating strike.

Do share , I would love to see that build .

I actually made a thread discussing something that would work pretty well with this before:

Play a Tengu, or a Human or Half-Elf with Racial Heritage (Tengu). Be an Unchained Rogue with the Scout and Swordmaster archetypes. You can now perform a pounce, getting your full attack when charging, AND get your sneak attack damage off. If you want to TWF, that's fine; and if you want to use your Human or Half-Elf bonus feat to snag Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Elven Curve Blade) and two-hand a sword for 1.5xDEX damage instead, that's fine too.

I don't have it :(

I'd suggest making a new thread asking for it. It was being compared to a debuff caster that did some damage rather than being a damage focus build. I think it was within the last month. But I'm not completely sure what their build was.

Spring Attack is for chumps!

Check out Bestial Leaper (Ex)
Prerequisite: Barbarian 6, raging leaper rage power
Benefit: While raging, the barbarian can take a move action to move and can take her normal standard action at any point during the move.

I made an elf barbarian with an elven curveblade and Vital Strike that used it. I took the elf favored class bonus to get my speed up to 45. Didn't play to a high enough level to get my speed up to 50.

I really like jumping and stuff, so I didn't consider the Raging Leaper rage power a rage power tax. :-P

A goblin scout rogue with the Roll With It feat can charge to get sneak attack, roll away when attacked back, then make a partial charge when staggered the next round. A feat like Rhino Charge and/or the Fast Getaway rogue talent might help. The Slow Reactions rogue talent would also be worthwhile IMO.

Edit: to be clear, this is a substitute for Spring Attack rather than something which uses it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

the Courser swashbuckler (blood of the beast) is made 100% around spring attack, add in the whole spring heeled style chain (which i not 100% if it would work or not) and you might got something very flashy. not to mention you can walk on walls at lv3!
