Playing a mount, what class?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

A DM is making a game (Very alternative, comical, homebrew races) and I intend on playing a mount (Basically a medium character for a small character to ride on). What class would you go for with such a character? I've been looking at Barbarians and Bloodragers so far. Archetypes welcome, no 3rd party though please.

How about Druid?

Sovereign Court

Dwarf monk can be pretty sweet, especially if you take Pummeling Charge. (Dwarf so that you're not too tall to be ridden indoors.)

And then be ridden by a halfling Sohei monk.

I am not sure whether you are going to be an awakened animal, or a regular character that needs to be able to become a mount.

If the former, barbarian is a pretty good outlet for aggressive styles.

If the latter, synthesist summoner.

Awakened animal style sort of thing :) Most of the reason I'm asking for classes, not class/race combos

The Exchange

If it's homebrew and comical, I really like the idea of a Druid. Talk to the GM about getting the ability to wild shape into a humanoid at 4th level instead of an animal.

I tried this, I was a wolf that could talk, and was intelligent. Lack of hands and thumbs will make it pretty boring after a bit. But sounds creative!

I believe fighter is generally considered sound for awakened animals, though it's not terribly comical in itself. Weapon training in natural weapons, then advanced weapon training options; armor training; bonus feats... all good for any shape. That's vanilla fighter; Unbreakable should also be considered, though it trades most of those away for other goodies.

Or go Eldritch Guardian, get an Improved Familiar with hands and thumbs to do things for you. (Actually, you don't need to be any special class to have a humanoid homunculus made for you, it just costs gold and a pint of your blood. Heck, get a whole flock!)

Maybe something with built in movement bonuses, barb bloodrager or monk? Bard or skald if you want to be a singing horse...

Maybe it's just me, but I have this mental image of a wizard horse. Or more likely a sorcerer horse of the Arcane bloodline. Not sure how the somantic componants would work though.

They'd have to find S components that work for them, but it's not a mechanical issue.

bloodrager with a dip into scaled fist monk get the dragon style as the bonus feat allows you to charge over dificult terain and through allies and bloodrager bloodline will give you some nice buffs aswell make sure you buff your str and your cavalire takes the order that allows him to use your str to his damage in addition to his str

He will not be considered his cavalier's special mount. Awakened animals are not eligible for that role.

Hmmm...I would imagine you would need to play some sort of brawler or barbarian if you want to play in the gladitorial fights to determine who run bartertown.

The druid is great... I love the mount having an animal companion. A sorcerer or the like could be cool (also with a familiar)

Though you could make him a cavalier and the mount would have a mount.

similar situation/playing a familiar:

My son had been playing the witches familiar in Carrion Crown, an awakened rogue monkey. Had some awesome skills, stealth, climb, acrobatics, and insane Dex. Sucked at damage at first, but was just coming into his own, but then he died last session. Two rooms before the end of the tower of module two.

Now we're dealing with the lack of familiar and lack of rogue, just before boss fight.

He was a great character though. I love the idea of a familiar with a real "mind of its own."

lets horse around with the idea of an awakened horse monk and its amazing flurry of hoofs.

Yeah, I hear that playing the eidolon has lots of roleplaying opportunity. :)

Formian
Giant Bee
Cooshee
Giant Frog
Horse(large)
Hyena
Giant Marmoset
Ogrillon
Orangutan
Giant Spider
Pooka

Druid does have animal form feats, so those could work in reverse. The animal companion will be interesting or something you might trade away in an archetype.
Investigator could be interesting.
Any arcane spellcaster would fit the role and compliment/rationalize your weirdness.

Vigilante.

Other than the obvious fun, the class offers a lot of useful mobility Talents. Extra move speed, a climb speed, running through difficult terrain, and that's before the Talents that are basically Combat Feat HD Delux Edition.
