Some sort of mahogany (or a species sold as such) Back in college i got a bunch of blocks from someone who's dad worked at a furniture factory.
Its nice for caving something speific (like a holy symbol) carving that its almost like carving foam: if i sharpen the knives well i can go cross grain with it no problem. I can tell the wood what its going to be. Sometimes with oak or maple and the like the wood tells me what its going to look like and it winds up better for it.
