Alas, that is why thread necromancy is so dangerous. You never know what you will be raising from the dead...

Imagine a Norwegian-descended English culture that paired Viking wanderlust with native English seafaring. Would they have gone on to discover America earlier? How would a less-technological European incursion alter things? With an extra century or two to recover from plagues and catch up technologically would the Aztecs form a new independent world culture power base or become subjugated yet still culturally distinct like India did under the Raj?

Good point.

that's a door that swings both ways, but the decision is ultimately yours. You do you.

First official day of break for my wife.
I have theoretically been off since the 16th.
Yet here I am at work taking delivery of new (used) toys for my Auditorium space! ;P
(Used small moving lights. Only half work and they are almost too small for my space. BUT they were donated!) :)
So new toys! YAY!
And now back to wife, and finally going Christmas shopping for the kids.
Happy day everyone!

I bought a new comforter when I was out shopping at a local discount store (Christmas Tree Shops-Don't you just love a bargain?) and the thing is sinfully warm and soft :D

An hour spent on the phone with dad.
*sigh*
Could be more for me and less for getting drunk on phone while spouting racist nonsense or accusing me of not knowing history and its influence on politics and then proceeding to fail to answer basic things that I can answer together with the way they influence the current politics.
Or calling me dumb when I complain on growing threat of extreme nationalist movements around here...

I am sorry that you had to deal with that.

I hear parts of this, part of why I don't talk to mine...

Oi, 1st major shopping for family day finally done. :)
Wife's and My annual 'date day' where we go shopping together, eat out for lunch, etc.
Was going very well. No stupid shoppers being ridiculous, no panic attacks, no stupid traffic. (At least no stupider than usual!) :)
Wife having a happy time. YAY!
Then I get a phone call, one of my old college gaming buddies/roommate just last night went to the hospital because he did not feel well.
He has stage 4 cancer.
Can 2016 just be f@#$%ing over now?!? Please? -_-

Damn! I am so sorry about that. I lost my step-mom to cancer and my mom went through breast cancer three times. Cancer sucks.

Ragadolf |

Thanks Sharoth. Appreciate that.
Yeah It does suck. It's been going around here too.
My mom survived Breast cancer twice. (2 different kinds?)
My wife had her Thyroid removed due to pre-cancer, I survived kidney cancer, (early detection) and one of our other college friends survived stage 2 cancer (colon I think?)
This one,... just didn't see the warning signs or ignored them too long I guess.
He's not giving up just yet, He's flying back to Tulsa where we have one of the best cancer centers there is. If there is anything that can be done they will do it.
Just with Everything ELSE that has happened to everyone in 2016, I just thought we might, actually, get to the new year without any more bad news. :/
Sorry. I really wasn't going to be a Debbie Downer today I swear! ;P
And since it IS 1:30 am here now,... Happy Friday Everyone! :)

That sucks balls about your buddy.
Agree with your sentiment about this year just getting done with.

"If we assume that life formed on Earth – which seems reasonable, given that we have not yet found it anywhere else –"
I submit that we haven't found it anywhere else because we haven't been anywhere else. Yet. Also, "life formed on earth" is not inconsistent with "and on other planets".
