Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hey folks,

I was in a group that dropped out of our weekly game after Adv Deck 3. I'm going to start Runelords from the beginning I need some help picking 3 characters, I own all 3 sets and all class decks.

What do you think would be a 'perfect' combo team to run through RotR?

Thanks in advance.

Take 3 of the original RoR characters. One fighter, one spellcaster and one support character typically. Any such combo will be fun to play.

Grand Lodge

Taking what Frencois suggests, play a couple scenarios and see if it is a good fit for you guys.

And fighter could mean Valeros, Harsk or Seelah, not just Valeros. When we played through Rise of the Runelords, our main group was Ezren, Kyra and Harsk. Sometimes a couple people would pop in to play. We'd add in Valeros or Merisiel or Lem.

Sovereign Court

Depending on your skill, you may even try a less compatible set of characters. I always saw Runelords as fairly easy, and am currently building a party that simply doesn't shine in that set. Lirianne without guns, Jirelle without swashbuckling (maybe there were a couple in the set), etc. It definitely adds to the challenge and makes you really think about your strategy.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions.

In the group of 3 I'm playing RotR with, one thing we made sure of is that someone had a decent base die in every skill. So we had CD Kyra with her d10s in Strength and Wisdom, Wu Shen with her d12 Dex and d10 Con, and Radillo with her d10 INT and d10 CHA. It's worked very well, as it generally means someone has a decent chance of closing any location that requires a skill check.

Good suggestions. I thought for a challenge, before I read your post, I'd try Valeros CD & Ezren RotR ran out of blessings in Brigandoom

The wife and I beat it with Merisiel (crackshot version) and Tarlin (cleric, but I don't remember what role she picked).

Add a Lem in there and I think you'd be covered nicely.

hmmm i haven't played Tarlin. My nephew is visiting on Wednesday I plan to show him RotR he's 21. Hopefully he'll like a cleric/rogue or bard :)

Scarab Sages

I like Tarlin a lot. He can hold his own in combat and does a good job supporting the group. His divine skill leaves something to be desired, and his deck is low on allies and items. One of his roles is a bit odd, focusing on allies and giving him Diplomacy, IIRC - on his d6 Charisma. It rounds him out a little bit, I guess? Maybe it's all good if you happen to be able to snag a bunch of Iomedae blessings and can pump up his Charisma with those and recharge the cards.

He's definitely my favorite cleric so far.

I'll admit I wrinkled my nose when she chose him. He seemed boring and a bit one-dimensional before we played, but as the adventures rolled on, he really worked out nicely.

You've converted me, I'm all in on Tarlin.

Scarab Sages

The nice thing is that he can heal with his weapons, and then he can switch out an armor for a weapon to get it back, and heal with his weapon again, next turn. This is great for Wrath of the Righteous, where unexpected events often leave characters without a full hand size in their draw pile, and hand-wipes are all-too-common, especially in the early game in Wrath. His healing powers are very flexible.

And then, he's good at bashing things. Really good, for a cleric. And if he uses the discard power on a weapon, then no big deal - swap an armor out for it, or heal it back. I think my first card feat for him in Wrath was weapons, because they're just so good. And there's a Soulshear loot card there that's made just for Tarlin.

So far, in my group at work, he's been very good in Runelords, which also has Iomedae blessings. I can't recall off-hand if Skull & Shackles has Iomedae - I think it doesn't.

Cool, one thing that stood out in your comments is instead of "So far, in my group at work, he's been very good in Runelords, ..." it should've been "So far, in my group "during" work, he's been very good in Runelords, ..."
:)

Thanks for the insight.

Ah yes - we do it at lunch time, so not during work hours. It's at work, really, in the pub on campus. Gotta get my prepositions right.

Lucky dog!

I duoed RotR with Kyra and Valareos, only 1 or 2 missions failed. The Int checks to close and defeat were the most difficult often requiring double blessings for only about 50/50 chance to succeed.

I'm playing with Tarlin & Amiri zoomed through B) 1-3 & 1) 1-4 but timed out on 1) 5. I can't close one of the locations without a blessing and need a 6 on d6 for another. So might be tough, I'll try again.

Depending on what locations are giving you difficulty, look at putting Troubadours or Sages in your deck to compensate for it. In parties with a specific weak stat, keeping one of those allies around to burn with your blessing can give you much more reasonable odds. Our play of Season of the Shackles got hit pretty hard by Cryptic Runes. Both our characters had d4s in Intelligence, so the Sages really came in handy there~

Good suggestion thanks.

R.I.P. Tarlin & Amiri Foul Misgiving was their undoing. I had the worst rolling I've ever had in a PFacg game.

Oof. My condolences.

If you can get it, Crown of Charisma works like a charm. Also, Invisibility.

@Longsshott11 Melindra has invisibility i thought about sanctuary for Arabundi but I seem to be burning through the heals with his 6 card hand. CofC sounds good will use a blessing or 2 if it pops up. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with class deck characters, but I always try to have at least one evade card per character, so they can 'lock down' the villain in a location on a chance encounter. Sanctuary's generally awesome as it had no check difficulty limitations AND it works for all characters at your location AND it lets you put the villain on top so you know exactly when you're going to encounter him again.

However, in the Aisha scenario, both she and the Skinsaw Man villain are undead, and Sanctuary has the Mental trait, so you'd be all out of luck with it.

Ah right forgot about that. Another thought I know if you evade a summoned monster it goes back to the box but if you use Sanctuary it says evade then put on top of the deck...

Also, I was able to grab cape of escape last night in Local Heroes. :)

Summoned monsters always go back to the box after being summoned, unless the summoning card says otherwise. So Sanctuary will let you evade, but the summoned monster goes back to the box, not on top of the deck. That is a general rule; I forget if Sanctuary got a FAQ to clarify that as well.

Sanctuary was originally given an FAQ to clarify that, then the FAQ was removed once the rules were changed to clarify it instead. You can see more about the decision behind that here.

Thanks guys. I'm surprised my DriveThru cards didn't have this change.

Well, the end result ended up being the Sanctuary wasn't changed.

It was changed at first, then that change was removed once the rules handled the issue. So the card, as it came in the game, is correct.

ah, makes sense. the good news is i haven't played the card incorrectly .
