By the way...
No character of mine has ever spent more than 20k gp on an item. So anything above that strikes me as merely theoretical, and thus is automatically less interesting.
Above about 50k gp my eyes glaze over. You might get my vote, but you will never get my heart.
For whatever that is worth.
Although I have actually spent 20k on a couple items, I have to agree with these sentiments.

Items that teleport you and your friends to safety when it gets too real or items that take away the concept of travel are boring. They go against the point of the game.
Items that make it easier to manage your inventory of gold/spells/items/ etc. are boring for a different reason.
Agreed, good traveling items are things that add to the experience of exploring the world, not take away from it or simplify it.
One of the items on my favorites so far is an item that encourages really getting into exploring and examining the world during travel. It encourages RPing, which is the hallmark of a great item in my opinion.

If you write your item with a rich and varied back story (you generally shouldn't, but if you feel you must) take a step back and look at your construction requirements. Understand that this is you admitting how any schmuck with these feats and spells can make this item. If you want to talk about the person who had the idea first, that's one (still kinda bad) idea. But if you are saying in your item's back story that all of these items where made long ago by one person, and never since, then why bother entering anything besides "Be that one epic dude long, long ago in a kingdom far, far away" in the construction requirements. Then take a step back and realize you are talking about either an artifact or plot maguffin, not a wondrous item, and go back to the drawing board.
That said, I will promises that next RPGSS if someone enters a rich and varied back story about the great person who first made their item, only to later have their IP stolen by casters everywhere to make cheap knock offs, I will upvote your item every time.

OMG I had to google this and it's a real thing. I may have nightmares tonight :( Still, you get my arachnophobic vote this time, item.
I know exactly what you're talking about. We had a story about it in the front page of our newspaper, so I was thrilled to see it referenced here.
Meanwhile, I think I have a major weakness for lantern items. I have yet to outright dislike one.

Now if Harrowed medium were a still a thing, that item would be dumb with the Cricket as it's written. But other than using it for that extremely specific purpose that doesn't exist, it's a good item. Have a vote.
Edit: Come to think of it, the way that's written technically allows you to travel faster than the speed of light. Whee!

I think my biggest pet peeve is poor writing. This is a writing contest in more ways than one. Sure, you have to know your mechanics. Sure you have to have a good idea. Sure you have to follow the rules...
But if you use clunky prose and common writing "don'ts" then you probably won't get far even if your item is amazing. My opinion, anyway.
