I really think you need to put an [evil] after your aura!

If your item requires me to turn into an accountant to keep track of what it does...it likely won't get my vote. This game has enough record keeping.

Themes I can't get away from: storms, ghosts, bypassing most or all DR, multi-element rainbow BS, bugs, weird forms of vision, things that break apart and reassemble/regrow, RUNES INSCRIBED ALONG THE BLAH BLAH SOFTLY GLOW SHUT UP, trivializing aquatic encounters, 'summons X as a swift action', and more.

WOW you must have read my item, except for the summons thing.

You would think with all the jokes about it, the filigree would stop. But no. Everything is still covered in filigree. When it's not filigree, it's runes. When it's not runes, it's the blood of an orphan.

I'm going to make a cursed item where anything it touches is infected and begins growing filigree on any available surface, including people.

Thank the Gods I can only use one of that at a time! But if I use it with that other item thats all but the same?
*edit* I just found a third one!?!?

Grand Lodge Marathon Voter Season 9

I forgot 'grants a natural attack', 'creates undead', 'goofy looking hat', 'teleport gun', 'absorb dragon powers', and 'weird new type of charges that replenish too easily and are crazy powerful'.

Arguably my entry does have one of those tropes.

Well, obviously the designer of this item is not a native English speaker. And the effects are kinda OP. And the competition is just nearly pointless. I can't see owning one of these. Which to pick? I'll roll a die. Odd=left, Even=right.

...

I think this item is missing the HP logo from its description. (Does not stand for "hit points" in this instance.)

Oh, your item was simple and clever, but the last paragraph just added restrictions and attuning procedures that were wholly unnecessary. But the other is not that cool and of limited use to non-NPCs. So you still get the vote.

Dark Archive

I... Wait... What??? You don't even make sense, but you're better than your competition. Hollow victory for you.

Again, getting sick of the word 'runes'. I'm fine when the runes are actually functional, 95% of the time they aren't.

This was such a pet peeve that I homebrewed an entire race designed specifically to subvert the trope by having glyphs represent their philosophical beliefs about the elegance of language. and transparency of magical knowledge. And if you parade around with magic items covered with runes that don't mean anything, they'll think you're a shallow poser.

I have already started writing next year's item. It is covered in the blood of an orphan named Rune Filigree.

Well, that's just a rip-off of this year's item that adds magical filigree to certain other items. (Or was it runes? I don't remember.)

The alliteration is a bit much, but other than that you're not too bad. If you were up against an item I like, you might be in trouble, but since I've taken an intense and immediate dislike to your competition, this one is a surprisingly easy choice.

Ha. While that word sounds the same as what you meant, the spelling is different. I suppose it's fitting, as I am not a fan of your item, though likening it to the word you did use would be too harsh.

My understanding of the sorting algorithm is that it dynamically ranks items and then wants information about comparisons between items close in overall rank. Telling the computer that a top 32 item is better than a bottom 10% entry isn't useful. Knowing if something is better/worse than something currently nearby is better data.

Marathon Voter Season 9

I want to vote for you, because you make that feat worth using. But you don't quite do it well enough, and you have one of my favourite weapons as an opponent.

i know, i know (heavy sigh at the necessity of the algorithm of lawful neutral bureaucracy and mathematical sense). it's just HAAAARD... plus, i'm so burned out on the bad ones that i've seen probably 10+ times each even though i STILL have to wait a friggin minute before i can click the less-bad one.

+1 weapons/armour, I am beginning to despise you. Especially when you are expensive. If you're going to cost that much, at least make the basic abilities attractive. Or otherwise not boring.

greater magic weapon/ Magic vestment exist and are easily obtainable/spam able at levels where you have the cash to buy an expensive armor or weapon. I would rather have a good ability than a bonus.

in other news, abacus vs abacus battle!

edit: then again at a certain price point, I agree with you.

Marathon Voter Season 9

You realise that your entire special ability is basically negated by doing that one easy thing, right? And that easy thing costs nearly 10 times less than the thing that you get your item to do. Come on, it's right where that thing you're trying to beat is explained!

Dark Archive

I'm not sure if you were trying (key word) to be clever with your item's name, or if you really didn't know what word you were looking for.

Wow, that is the nicheiest of niche items. Every scenario I can devise for using it ends up sounding really cheesy.

Yeah, "Bypass/hose all DR/resistances" is kind of getting obnoxious. It's like the whole "My item 'fixes' rules I don't like", and such.

You're back. I used to hate you, and I'm still not certain how I feel, but you're growing on me. Now that I've seen what else is out there, I guess you're alright. Don't expect me to like you though; that's asking too much.

For the record, I don't hate filigree or runes. Take one or the other and have what seems like every other description contain that word, and it starts to wear on a reader. Sure, the author probably didn't have that in mind when they created the item. However, that's probably a good, if minor, design point. When you read the description of the item, ask yourself "Have I ever seen this before, either described or visualized in an RPG, video game, show, or piece of art?" If the answer to that question is "yes," then there's a good chance a lot of other contestants have also, and you're setting yourself up to present a cliche.
