Thanks for the link, Snotlord. The idea of an interim adventure between BG1 and BG2 is quite likely.
I don't want to piss on anyone's parade--I really don't--but I admit I struggle to understand the desire for Baldur's Gate III. I mean, I get that people loved BG1 and BG2--especially BG2--I did too! Very much. And that there's a general desire for "more of same."
But... the story of Baldur's Gate 2 ended pretty definitively (you end either a literal god or still someone so powerful you're basically a demigod). All the Bhaalspawn are all gone, pretty definitively. All NPCs are given clear epilogues as to their fates. I like to think of the PC game Baldur's Gate stories as about the Ward of Gorion and his/her allies, Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, etc. etc. etc. Nothing else, to me, would be PC Baldur's Gate.* But that story is done. The "interim story" makes the most sense as a "sequel" because there's nothing else to tell directly of what comes after that would work well as a video game, and would appeal to others. (Mind, I'd kind of love to play a strategy game where you play as Imoen trying to secretly start up thieves' guilds all over the Sword Coast, but I think I am the only person who'd want that, and that wouldn't be a proper sequel to BG2 either, really, because the feel would be so different.)
And I don't see the point in slapping "Baldur's Gate III" on the name of a game if it doesn't have to do with the Ward of Gorion and/or the Bhaalspawn War, etc. I guess you could have "child of the Ward of Gorion" or whatever, but that forces, effectively you to define how BG2: Throne of Bhaal ended, which then invalidates effectively certain choices and playthroughs (I have never liked it when game sequels did that. "Oh, you played Evil Revan. But you're wrong.")
Further, I'm almost certain any NEW game to come out would be required by Wizards to be in 5th ed and in a newer take on the Forgotten Realms, so it wouldn't feel at all like the old BG series anyway.
I'm much happier to see a good story end as a great story, and then see new, different great stories instead. More isometric RPGs, absolutely (I loved Pillars of Eternity--wasn't as good as BG2, couldn't have been on its budget, but was better than BG1, I thought). More great fantasy stories from great developers, yes! But I feel like trying to build a sequel to a much loved game from almost 20 years ago is just going to set up for disappointment and never be what people really want it to be.
For those of you who do want BGIII, what do you think it would be? Who would you want the protagonist to be? What edition and setting? Do you think it could really top BG2?
*As opposed to the PS2 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series which was an entirely different story, just also set in the city of Baldur's Gate

The thing I didn't like about Baldur's Gate for the PC was that during battle everything was happening at once. It was kinda hard to manage the battle since while I was still directing my forces, the enemy was hitting me from all sides multiple times at once.
I prefer turn based games where even if some the enemy goes first, they only hit once or twice before moving onto the next one in the queue.

I was sceptical for the same reasons as mentioned above, and believe this BG 1.5 is a good idea, if anyone feel they must make a new game.
The only way to make a true BGIII is to make the game about the city and Bhaal somehow, and leave the Ward of Gorion as a part of the backstory.
BBII, only bigger, will not make sense - and hopefully wotc realize that.

When it comes to a Baldur's Gate III, I think an inbetween story is fine and doesn't mess with what's going with the two games. That being said, a third adventure set after BG II - but only tangentially related would be fine. The things I love to see in a Baldur's Gate game is:
a) The same type of game engine and play mechanics; b) A chance to visit other parts of the Sword Coast; and c) more Forgotten Realms lore imbedded into all.
It sounds like (a) and (b) are pretty much part of their plan. I especially am not in a rush to see a game go 5th edition just yet; the current hybrid of mechanics seems to work for the most part with the game engine. As for (c), the good thing is that the dateline is now far enough back from current Torilian timeline that you have plenty of old canon to work from in framing a story. That's just my take on it.

I was sort of hoping they might have done a planescape Torment update,
but since I just bought all 3 of the EE's in the last week I guess timing is great for a new supplemental adventure instead.
BTW, on Friday rolled a ranger with 90 points and 18/00 strength. I am so enjoying playing through BG again. Got to the Friendly arm inn, killed a mage who claimed to be my friend, meet khalid and jaheria. Now time to do side quests and level to 4 before jaheria's whining about the Nashkel mines gets tiresome.

I think the general idea is that a BG3 would not be a sequel to BG1/2, although there would be scope for characters to show up, but would be a new adventure in a similar vein.
In fact, Black Isle spent some time working on BALDUR'S GATE 3: THE BLACK HOUND (before Black Isle tanked and BG3 was cancelled) and it was a stand-alone, new adventure set in the Dalelands. I think there were hints that Minsc might show up but otherwise the links to the first two games were fairly slender.

This countdown is for a midquel that takes place between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II. It's been referred to by the company as "Adventure Y" and has something to do with Dragonspear Castle and the Underdark.
Based on comments made by the folks making this game, it brings back a lot of the old voice actors, such as Jim Cummings as Minsc and David Warner as Jon Irenicus (presumably in a role that foreshadows him as the villain of Baldur's Gate II).
Should be a lot of fun.

Man. That "Heya! It's me! Imoen!" got old so fast in BG1 - it's worse to my ears than Navi's "Hey! Listen!" from Ocarina of Time. I hated Imoen so much after my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate that every subsequent playthrough I killed her as soon as we set foot outside of Candlekeep.
Her being key to the plot engine of Baldur's Gate II reduced my enjoyment of that game and story considerably, as I never felt any motivation to save her from Irenicus and Bodhi.

As far as a potential BG3 is concerned, I imagine all the press Obsidian and inXile garnered when Pillars of Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera were both super over-funded caught the folks over at Wizards' attention. There's obviously still a market for this kind of game and Kickstarter in particular has shown how profitable nostalgia plus some shine and polish can be. The glowing praise Pillars of Eternity has received since it's release has only got to serve as futher encouragement in that regard.
As far as story goes, direct sequel, parallel story, or something in the middle - any which way they go has potential. I'm with Hama though and hoping fervently that Imoen is nowhere to be found!

I want all of the Imoen. I love her to death. I would play a game that was just all about Imoen. She was a major reason I played through BG2 as many times as I did. I liked her when she was relentlessly perky, and I liked her creepy cheerful darkness after her ordeal in BG2. I also even liked her when she had a funny accent and was called "Leliana" in Dragon Age: Origins.
Minsc is the one I tired of. I found him funny only the first 935 times; the next 10,524,382 times got old, as do the perpetually relentless fanboy references.
Everyone had endlessly repetitive barkstrings so I didn't find any one more irritating than another.
Just goes to show---everyone has their own reasons for playing.
Anyone know what happened to the Baldur's Gate comic that was supposed to come out? I didn't pay attention because it involved Minsc, but I think it should have been out by now.

An aside, but I love that in Pillars of Eternity (made by Obsidian, which is largely Black Isle) they have both an inn called "the Black Hound" and a "black hound" pet as homage to this fallen project.
PoE, while not perfect, is really more of what I want to see in RPGs--new material, not rehashing old stuff that seems to be setting people up for little else but, ultimately, disappointment. Nostalgia is an evil thing. It makes you always want more and yet never be satisfied when you get it.

It was a fun comic that lasted five issues and which can now be found on Comixology.
If you don't mind spoilery reviews, I have breakdowns of all five issues over at this blog.

But..but...the cheesecake...
Where was there Imoen themed cheesecake?!
{Runs off to Internet to check, then runs back}
{Peeks slyly around corner of Internet}
Was there Jahiera themed cheesecake tooooo?
I bet there is.
I liked the comic.
I would settle for an expanded version of BG1/2 with tons more new regions to explore and stupid stuff to do that doesn't affect the Fate of the World. If it's anything like that, I'm very interested.

I was more interested (and amused) in your commentary on AD&D's wandering harlot table. Man, I'd forgotten how much WTH you could find in DMG. Cheers!

Ooh, thanks for the reviews and the blog, looks great!
My favorite character was Viconia. I always made her TN in ToB. I'm a sucker for a redemption story.
Me too, I liked her as well. She wasn't wimpy or whiny like some of the other love interests. She had a dark sense of humor that I liked, and I loved that you could help encourage her to change.

The original Baldur's Gate series happened around 1368 DR, and I think it's up to around 1489 DR now in Faerun. Maybe this could be a sequel featuring the kid/grandkid of the BG protagonist (or one of the numerous Bhaalspawn antagonists) and using the 5e mechanics?
That would step on the toes of Murder in Baldur's Gate, which was a loose follow-up to the video games (with a very unsatisfying end for the Baldur's Gate protagonist thrown in).
This is an in-between adventure for the Baldur's Gate series - 2nd edition rules, following the story of the protagonist from the first game, and telling the tale of how he went from being the hero of Baldur's Gate to getting tortured by an evil wizard in some dungeon in Amn.

I'm guessing they are not keeping the original level advancement of BG 1&2? 'Cause there's no room for leveling up if they do

I can hardly believe that anyone could not love both of them.
And while we're at it, how about some appreciation for Xzar?!? His voice is ambrosia, you know....
I hated Imoen the moment she spoke for the first time. And the only thing that actually makes minsc loveable is the fact that he has a silly accent and a hamster

Yep. Baldur's Gate is a 2e franchise. There are some 3e-isms, such as a sorcerer class and shadowdancer kit.

How true to complete 2nd edition is it? My favorite 2 nd edition class was ranger/cleric with the fighting monk kit. Is that available? Do spiked gloves work? Are specialty clerics available?
The Baldur's Gate series is core 2nd edition with some of the option books added. Each class has a handful of kits you can choose from (although multi-class characters don't get kits), and you can take proficiencies in fighting styles (i.e., single weapon, sword and shield, two-weapon, and so on).
I don't recall any spiked gloves in the game. There are specialty clerics, but only one for each alignment (I think).
There's some 3rd edition content mixed in, since Baldur's Gate II came out just prior to the release of 3e. The Enhanced Editions expanded that content further by adding the shadowdancer, dwarven defender, dragon disciple, and blackguard as kits.
There might be some additional content added in the new game, but it will definitely still use the 2nd edition system, since the option to import your character from Baldur's Gate to this new game and then into Baldur's Gate II has been confirmed by one of the developers.

Diablo III disappointed its fans.
Settlers III disappointed its fans.
Age of Empires III disappointed its fans.
Galactic Civilizations III disappointed its fans.
Master of Orion III was beyond disappointment, it was so incredibly bad that it made people cry.
Of course, there are games like Warcraft III showing number three doesn't have to be bad. But for your own good: Be careful with your expectations...
If you enjoyed BG2, you probably will become very happy with this one, though (in case you don't know it yet):

Ehrm. Diablo 3 is an excellent game. People just tend to b#~#% about things.

So, was it as good as part II? Some of these III titles weren't that bad either. Still they disappointed their fans since they expected something even more awesome than part II.
I admit 'disappointed its fans' is a poor, overly dramatic wording though - rather it should be 'disappointed the majority of its fans'. And I got the impression this majority existed in each case - even when taking into account that complaints are usually louder than praises.
