I think comparisons to a PvE (with PvP) game like WoW doesn't quite work. It's the full PvP games that need to be looked at and how ganking worked in that.

Take Shadowbane for instance.

Whenever you went out into the world and you came across another player, you immediately started sizing them up. How many people in their group vs the one you were with? If either of you were solo, did you have enough skill and confidence to take them on? Where was the nearest escape route? Did they notice you? Do you risk calling out to them?

If any of this lead to you thinking you could beat them, there's a pretty good chance that you were going to try rather than be friendly. After all, you could loot their corpse if you won and who knows what they might be carrying.

But wait, did they belong to an ally guild? If you fought that could lead to a war. Did you want to start a war? Maybe. Or you might get kicked from your guild and blacklisted by others. If they are from an enemy guild though you might get lucky and loot something important.

There's a whole lot of questions and not enough time to think about all of them. It's time to act.

I think this is more along the lines of how PFO is going to play out. While there is incentive to chase down the gankers, there's also incentive to gank. The world shall be drowned in the blood of the players. And it will be slippery.
