Drow PC friendly game...

Product Discussion

My players would like to play a group of Drow in our next game and I'm trying to find some thing I can run them through... and I came across Rise of the Drow.

Before I go in for a 10/month membership in AaW I would like a few peoples thoughts on the game and how it went for them.

I am thinking that the players could be part of a Family that was driven out of the lands below by a rival family and that the PCs have never really seen the world below... they only know the names of those who drove them out... So relatively goodish drow.

Any help from people who have experience with this AP or AaW appreciated....

Thanks

There's a post from the publisher here stating that you could run this with Drow PC's. If that link takes you to the front page, go to the 8th comment on page 3 of the comments.

I don't think you need a subscription to AAW to run this. You could just pick up the book (or at least the pdf) from any of your normal online gaming stores. AAW might have a physical copy of the main book left, but I don't know.

If you are running this, I would recommend starting with The Darkness Arrives since it starts the PC's at level 1. This one IS available in print from Paizo.

Way of the Wicked AP perhaps?

There is always the option of just making your own campaign designed around your PCs and the backstories they want. Talk to them, ask them what they want to do as Drow. Make a campaign around that.

I assume the OP is looking for a shortcut in running a published adventure instead of the work of "cooking from scratch".

As someone who has just started Way of the Wicked, I can highly recommend it.

It would totally allow for a drow PC with no special considerations or modifications; You could run it 'as is' with a drow without problem.

My biggest advice however is to make sure the rest of your players are happy. This is anecdotal evidence from my own experience, yet drow can be quite polarising. Some players just flat out hate the idea of drow PCs.

In addition, Way of the Wicked assumes Lawful Evil PCs who are happy to work under someone else, and together. It manages this rather well, but it still relies on the players themselves agreeing to stick to the system.

Well, if you are in Golarion you must be aware of just how legendary drow are (and that their appearance puts most of the elven secret forces on "OH S**T" level of alert). Any adventure that is far enough from Kyonin could work. Actually, the weirder the place or adventure, the better - I think an unusual AP like Iron Gods or the Baba Yaga one could gel pretty well with a band of new to the surface drow, perhaps with minor adaptations of the plot hooks :) .

It is totally worth it!

In addition to Rise of the Drow there are two books of drow-specific rules—new items, feats, spells, magic items, and class archetypes—including my personal favorite, the wall-clinging, web shooting sorts of dark elf warriors. ;)
You can get those as your 2 monthly PDFs (and I think it's cheapest do so through a subscription if that matters to you).

AaW is bursting with material besides! If you've got players interested in being the Underworld but not overly keen on being a drow, there are a slew of other subterranean races they can play instead. :D
