I was confused when I watched Krull and didn't understand why the glaive was so small

I was so confused when I started gaming, and the book said that a glaive was a polearm.

I was confused in reverse, as I had rp'd prior to the movie coming out so I scratched my head thinking that it should be a polearm.

Growing up I really liked The Last Unicorn and am surprised at how many people have- not only never seen it but- never heard of it.

We love that film. BTW...look for a potential re-touring of the film around the US sometime soon. New music, and they're bringing back the actors for a reprisal of their roles. Very cool. :)

I can't find it anywhere. I always remember the chinese dragon...so cool looking.

Don't forget the awesome title song by Don McLean! Flight of Dragons!

There's more than one?

There were 2 or 3 others that were straight to video.

For me, it'd have to be Solomon Kane. That was my first introduction to a genre I like to call "brutalist fantasy" (Because really nasty things happen to everyone), but I'd never heard of it before it went on Netflix.

Hawk the Slayer.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Um, well it has some good bits...

The Exchange

Never forget the machine-crossbow, for example.

I really think Willow and Ladyhawke and the Dark Crystal were some of the best fantasy movies put out- I would not call them under-rated.

I'm another who likes the first D&D movie. It might help that I saw it years before I started gaming so wasn't pissed off about what they got "wrong". Yes, there's some terrible acting, but I don't think it really detracts from the movie. Looking at it as an action comedy helps as well.

I'm surprised Yor hasn't made it by now.

Yor, the hunter from the future - bad movie, yet has all the cool elements of a fantasy film for a child to watch (save for a budget). It briefly has a flaming sword in it. The hero is at the epicenter for the destruction of at least five civilizations (the first village that took him in, the cave people that kidnapped those people - which he wiped both out in a flood. The desert cave dwellers that he took the flaming sword from, the beach village that took him in, and the advanced civilization at the end).

There's dinosaurs that can be used as hang gliders too.

Yeah, I can't believe somebody hadn't mentioned that movie yet.

The seventh voyage of sinbad was pretty good. And I know it's not a fantasy film but equinox was pretty awesome.

How To Train Your Dragon was also awesome.
And am I the only person here who saw Corman's The Raven?

Wow, it's like you guys are reading off our "Coming Soon" list over on Dragonreel.com. Saw some folks say Dragonslayer, which we talked about. Just recorded the Highlander episode. Anyone feel strongly enough to come on and talk about one of these others? We're doing the original D&D movie next.

How to train your dragon 1 & 2 are brilliant, I agree. :)

Secret of NIMH. Not brought up nearly often enough. Awesome fantasy/science fiction imagery.
I enjoyed the D&D sequel. Not sure if it'd hold up if I managed to find and rewatch it, however.
Prince of Egypt wasn't exactly underrated, but it's often forgotten. Rise of the Guardians is similar, except it was a hard flop.
The first animated LOTR movie is hilarious to watch with a group.
Depending on my mood, I actually prefer Rankin & Bass's Hobbit movie to Peter Jackson's.
We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story. Just for this scene.

Flight of Dragons and 13th Warrior are both high on my list.

I'm very glad someone mentioned Deathstalker 2. So, so much cheesy goodness.

I'll nominate MirrorMask and Coraline. I believe Coraline had some success, but I think MirrorMask was just too far out there for most audiences. This scene is pretty great.

The Navigator is also great (no, not Flight of the Navigator). Its portrayal of Death was really different.

KC, I'd never seen that movie, but that was a neat scene.

From my understanding, that's the most edgy thing in the whole film. Otherwise it seems pretty subpar.

Inkheart is very underrated.

Another good but forgotten film is High Road to China. It is not fantasy, but well worth watching.

The Exchange

While they aren't fantasy movies, and aren't underrated either, the Kurosawa samurai movies are nevertheless good stuff for someone who likes "films with swords". Throne of Blood is the one with the most overtly fantastical elements, being a samurai remake of Macbeth. But the absolute classic is probably Seven Samurai. Of the ones in colour, I'd highly rate Ran (though it's not exactly a cheerful experience, being a version of King Lear) and then Kagemusha. Both Throne of Blood and Ran have a couple of seriously evil female characters in too.

I watched Daywatch tonight instead of the previous Nightwatch (I picked the wrong DVD out of the double pack). Worth watching for the scene where a female Dark One drives her red sports-car on the freaking building and then into it in order to talk to the the head of the Dark Ones to say nothing of near the end of the film where Moscow is being destroyed. However, it's best to see the preceding film Nightwatch beforehand, as not only does it introduce the characters, but a lot of surprises in the first film are spoiled if you watch Daywatch first.

The Archer and the Sorceress

Apparently it is possible to pass on awesomeness from one "heart bowman" to another and thereby turn all your arrows into Rocket-propelled grenades.

THE SECRET OF THE SWORD!

Because when She-Ra came into the world... it was a little better.

Anyone else think He-Man got shafted when powers were given out? There was an episode when his sister said "Sword to ice-maker" and I was like: well that is weird, you are fighting an army not making cocktails but then she started blasting foes with a FREEZE RAY! and I was like: WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE A SWORD MODE?!?!?!

But... Secret of the Sword is pretty good.

---

On a side note there was 7th Son which just came out and it will likely make this list in the future when the disappointment wears off but it plays out as a pretty authentic He-Man movie (the villains at least).

Not really. He got the much better supporting cast (and a far more capable combat mount) after all. And he has the raw strength to persevere where funky rainbow powers would fail.

Raw strength to persevere? He lives in a castle where the good guys are in control of 90% of the planet and the bad people live in the lava pool snake castle...

She-ra lives in a forest, the last bastion of freedom, which is primarily inhabited by halflings (or gnomes... Idk, they talk with a weird cadence and it upsets me).

Strength to persevere... Oh I am sorry, does the wealth and privilege become so luxuriating that you don't WANT to leave your plush castle in order to fight evil?

His mount is cooler though... I mean, hers flies but battle cat is a BEAST!

I had it on VHS from television, and had to transfer it to DVD to keep a copy around.

Edit: Amazon has it.

Excuse me on my He-man ignorance. Most of my knowledge would be from the 2000? He-man remake. However, for the original series, wasn't She-Ra supposed to be as strong as He-man? I thought she was also excessively strong.

Labyrinth

She-Ra wasn't as strong as He-man but she wasn't that far off ether. I wish She got a remake like 2000 He-man especially since she started as a villain.

Color me a huge fan of Cutthroat Island ("I've no future in the army, sir.") as well as Van Helsing.

Also The King's Guard. Find it. Watch it. Identify your fellow gamers in it.

Nate and Hayes isn't really fantasy but it's a fun little pirate flick that has been overlooked through the years.

She isn't quite as strong, but she can read the minds of animals, has healing powers and her sword transforms into... well... pretty much anything she can think of (shield, lasso, space helmet, freeze ray) were some of the more typical. Her transformation also involved her hair growing but He-man got a tan so... maybe that is all part of the concealment.

Wolfhound for some goofy Russian fantasy.

"Curse of the Ring" was pretty cool... mostly I liked that one character was named Kreimhild, lol. Cute.

I know a lot of us are always looking for new fantasy movies that fly under the radar. I'm wondering what everyone's are?

I bring this up because some good friends of mine just released a film called Mythica on ConTV (a free Netflix-for-nerds site) that is pretty awesome. At a minimum its better than the D&D movies, and at fraction of the cost.

I loved growing up with films like LadyHawke, and Willow, and even Goonies. What about you guys?

The group that did Mythica does a lot of fantasy movies through kickstarter. They seem to be solid, if sometimes on the cheesy end. Their special effects have been good. They did The Christmas Dragon and got the animation studio that does Game of Thrones dragons, and it looked like a live action Toothless. It was adorable.

Edit: Mythica 2 is currently running on kickstarter

Curse of the Dragon Slayer is a low budget, no name actor filled movie that I enjoyed. I don't remember any dragons in the movie, or anyone claiming to have slain one but I do think there was a curse involved in the movie so the title isn't a 100 percent lie. I went in with low expectations and had fun watching.

They are. They are cool guys, I've been lucky enough to work with most of them, and be really good friends with a couple of them. It's good to see a fan. :)

Fire and Ice (not really a movie, as much as a series of animated Frank Frazetta paintings)
Rock and Rule (animated mice people over throw the evil Mick Jagger tyrant)

Can someone please remaster a new soundtrack for Ladyhawke, the score is painful but the film itself is awesome.

Also Plunkett and Macleane is cool, not fantasy but definitely worth a watch.

EDIT: Also, Wizards (1977). How could I have forgotten to mention this?

Circle of Iron was fun, in a low-budget fantasy martial arts film sort of way. Another one that I only saw once (in a cheap theater in the late 70s) is Metamorphoses, Takashi's animation of a bunch of Greek myths as told by Ovid. No voice acting, just narration/storytelling.

If I could plus this comment a thousand times, I would. The soundtrack is ... execrable.

Also my main problem with the movie. Off the topic of fantasy, but I think the Synth score ruins Gallipoli as well. I'm still trying to figure out why it hurts there but works in Chariots of Fire.

Scarab Sages

Now, let's be fair here...the score is great, it just obviously belongs into another movie ;-)

You all may not be aware, but about 14 years ago, New Line started releasing a trilogy of films based on an obscure volume, Lord of the Rings. They're worth checking out.

In all seriousness, what about Disney's Sword in the Stone? I remember it featuring a really neat wizard's duel.

Lord of the Rings? Is that about a circus? Never heard of it.
