Does this work to get dex to attack and damage without being a swashbuckler?

Rules Questions

Basically a dueling sword allows you to use dex to attack with the appropriate proficiency, it is also a one handed slashing weapon, thus falling under the purview of slashing grace. The dex to damage from slashing grace does not say it is reliant on you benefitting from the whole treat it as a one handed piercing weapon. So is it safe to say that this would allow me to have dex to attack and damage without being a swashbuckler or even having a dip in it?

yes, there are options to get it without being a swashbuckler, but most are exotic weapons, thus costing a feat usually to be able to use them. The dueling sword is one such weapon.

Well I figured this would work well with a Kensai as he automatically gets the proficiency and weapon focus.

You could also enchant your weapon with the agile weapon property to get Dex to damage on any weapon you can normally use Weapon Finesse with.

Yes it does work well. For a Dex built Kensai, with no dips, the best four weapon options are probably Rapier, Aldori Dueling Sword, Scimitar, or Whip.

- Aldori Dueling Swords and Whips: Weapon Finesse and Slashing Grace
- Rapier: Weapon Finesse and Fencing Grace
- Scimitar: Weapon Finesse and Dervish Dance

Given that for the Kensai weapon focus is free Slashing Grace would be better for scimitars anyway as it does not require to burn two ranks in Perform and making the scimitar count as piercing opens up Flamboyant Arcana and Arcane Deeds as viable options

@ Entryhazard

But he wouldn't get Dex to attack, as the scimitar isn't a finesse weapon.

True, I forgot that.

But it would be.

With Dervish Dance yes, but not with Slashing Grace.

Also don't forget effortless lace, which can turn any one-handed piercing or slashing weapon into a finesseable weapon.

Dervish Dance does make the scimitar count as piercing.

Dervish Dance wrote:
Benefit: When wielding a scimitar with one hand, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You treat the scimitar as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s precise strike ability). The scimitar must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.

If you have any access to mythic in your game, Mythic Weapon Finesse adds your dex to your damage.

With the aldori dueling sword, you can get dex to hit and damage at level one. With dervish dance, you have to wait until third level.
