1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm not super sure Where VoodistMonk is talking about but those scary names and pregnant pauses do make it sound dramatic :)

I'll have to check out around Varisia because, yea, I really wouldn't want much else to distract from what I'm shooting for OR more to read up on lol. Thx Eidolon.

thx guys, always open to more ideas too.

The adventure, and possible following campaign, is going to focus around battling a cult worshipping/revering/brainwashed by a Kraken whom in the initial adventure are picking off struggling villagers to enslave for said Kraken. The villagers are getting picked off as they venture into the wilds for food and such as they've not been able to to take boats out for fish or trade for months because of vicious storms caused by Kraken's far in the ocean engaging in their "hateful compulsion" (they're making babies) and for a spooky omen the bay will be black with Kraken blood in the adventure and nobody is going to know what's happening. The adventurers will initially simply be tasked with protecting and aiding the villagers in their foraging/hunting etc because of the amount that have not been returning.

I hope that's enough detail to give folks an idea of what I'll be doing. I'm just not familiar enough with Golarion to know a good choice for this. Ideally I'd want it to be more of a village than a city.

Ok the only stipulation I have for this character is that he has to be a pure swashbuckler. Absolutely no multi classing. The character will be tenth level with 750,000 gold to spend. I need advice on everything, race, traits, feats, and gear. The only thing I know about my opponent is that he is centered around the aldori sword lord PrC, and is pure martial. Also all advice must be PFS legal.

Unfortunately it is PFS so the adventures are a tad random. Also, I understand that ranged is the most effective combat style, however I was aiming for more of the role of, good melee fighter/ competent ranged fighter WHEN NECCESSARY or more productive.

Well, the wakizashi would likely be substituted for short swords if I went TWF, the only thing that concerns me with that is I have recently been made aware that quick draw only allows you to Draw weapons as a free action and does nothing to help you put away what is in your hands faster, this misconception of the feat now makes me wonder what sort of action is putting away a weapon? What about putting away two?

My character has 18 DEX and 14 STR. Given that, I'm struggling to decide whether dex to attack and damage with a scimitar, or simply using an elven curve blade for the boost to power attack and 1.5 Str (which would only be one less than dex to damage) would be more efficient. I'm leaning towards the elven curve blade but it is one more feat I'd have to spend on melee and not archery which seems slightly more demanding. I'm aiming to go straight slayer if I can, may dip fighter if I'm in dire need of feats, if that would be in any way relevant to the question.

EDIT: Race is half elf btw, I know I can take a racial for proficiency with the elven curve blade which is tempting, however I was really digging dual minded for the help with will saves since they are my only weak save and I only managed a plus 1 in Wis. Opinions on this would be welcome as well.

I'd say it may suffice to force this player who wants to switch characters constantly of being in the role play position of merely being hired help. Then whenever he/she wants to switch characters it is simply that the character leaves the parties service. Thus allowing in game logic as to why the switch is happening. Allow any concept but there should be a common theme in the character pitch that they are selling their services to the party. This would degrade the significance of their character to the plot but this seems like a fair trade

Why would they need it right off the bat? I haven't looked at this specifically but there are plenty of classes that allow you to make use of feats you do not meet the prerequisites for.

Well good to know, thanks for the info.

Just curious if maybe I'm missing something here.

Ah thanks so much. Just thought I'd try to avoid clogging up the message boards. Cheers

Hm, didn't think they'd be that viable at high level with damage reduction and what not, figured that would be an issue.

Hm, how would they be better acquainted to a natural weapon build exactly? The only way to focus on natural weapons is to be a ranger or slayer correct? This would provide claws and other races are capable of starting with a bite. I am aware that they can take a feat(s?) to make their bite better however which I suppose has potential.

Before any of this gets started I would like to clarify that the Brawler's option for SA, snakebite striker, has a very weak progression as it should. I am also aware that flurry of blows and sneak attack is a really powerful sounding idea. The brawler's Brawler's flurry class skill would provide extra attacks and it can get SA, but it is off set by the very slow progression of the class' SA and that fighting with your fists kinda sucks. I don't think a monk archetype with SA would be game breaking at all and may provide the class with a helpful, if a little situational boon. I'm sure someone has wanted to make some form of martial artist assassin, I think it would be a nice option for the class that would at the very least help fulfill certain character concepts. Any thoughts?

Well it doesn't take away from the statement even if it is the only option it isn't bad, although I wasn't aware that rapiers had their own feat until someone just now told me in a thread of my own.

Oh, while I don't much care for the visual I do see the mechanical benefits.

Nah I'm sure I can find the guide, although how would a rapier work with slashing grace?

One of my favorite classes from 3.5, the warlock, was remade for pathfinder in a 3rd party product, since it will never be pfs legal I was wondering if there was any chance they would come out with their own version of it, or if they have done something similar to this in the past.

So what if I start out as a Kensai? Spells, very easy access to dex to damage with a dueling sword, that has all that wrapped up but now there is nothing to make me feel like a ninja, I've become a magic swordsman.

Inquisitor does seem like an ace choice, being essentially a martial class and all, but not getting good proficiencies.

You can get Dex to damage without being a swashbuckler. One example of this is the dueling sword. It is a one handed slashing exotic weapon that if you have proficiency for it you can use finesse with. You can also use slashing grace with it as the dex to damage is not dependent on whether you benefit from treating it as a piercing weapon or not.

So if these races once again become restricted will other races be allowed that weren't before? I sincerely hope it never comes down to just core races.

So I was asking for advice on a character concept and have now been convinced to make radical changes to it, now the topic doesn't fit what I need help doing and wanted to basically start a new thread with different details. In an effort to not clog up the board I wanted to remove the first topic if that is possible.

Well they have the option to choose a number of eastern weapons, I don't see why they couldn't choose a ranged one. Soooo any good eastern ranged weapons?

Well I figured this would work well with a Kensai as he automatically gets the proficiency and weapon focus.

Basically a dueling sword allows you to use dex to attack with the appropriate proficiency, it is also a one handed slashing weapon, thus falling under the purview of slashing grace. The dex to damage from slashing grace does not say it is reliant on you benefitting from the whole treat it as a one handed piercing weapon. So is it safe to say that this would allow me to have dex to attack and damage without being a swashbuckler or even having a dip in it?

Hm, if I could refluff rage a bit that could work, the only downside I'm seeing is that I would have little reason for dexterity as I would likely be walking around in medium armor and rage doesn't favor a dex build very much.

Well I don't know a lot about them but an anti paladin may be immune to fear. Will come back if i think of anything else.

First off, I may not know a lot about the Deathstroke (shame he is awesome) but I wouldn't consider him anywhere near a mustache twirling villain. I would say he would fall into the category of chaotic neutral. Does whatever if the price is right kinda guy if my limited knowledge is correct. It may be troublesome to deal with as I am unaware of the alignment of your party, but generally your willingness to do something should be based on whether you feel you are being compensated adequately. You are a mercenary no two ways around it you are in this for money. Your party should be considered as tools to get the job done until they have earned your respect. As I said this could be frustrating for the party to deal with but that is sort of my impression of deathstroke, however strictly you wish to go by this is obviously up to you.

Hey! Shocking grasp copying chidori is exactly what I wanted!

Also I am quite ok with skipping on the unarmed prowess of Naruto Ninjas as Joe Musashi used a katana and shurikens, same goes for Ryu. I just love shinobi 3 way more than ninja gaiden.

Also I did consider eldritch heritage but had no idea as to what ability would be worth the heavy feat tax, less heavy if I were a half elf or human but heavy none the less as I won't get many.

You make a good point I suppose, I'm just worried that it would be to much of a dip to get magic that would stay relevant, that or I would end up not being very effective in combat. I suppose one of the magus archetypes could decently do this concept as I believe there are some that are ever so slightly more melee oriented. I suppose I would just have to find a way to make it feel more ninja like.

I understand that you don't have to let your class name define your character but the class offers flavorful abilities that suit the concept I was hoping for which is, well, ninja. The ability to run on water is pretty sweet, and while I don't want it to be my focus sneak attack is nice. Invisibility and shadow clone (as well as the ability to shout SHADOW CLONE JUTSU! and BELIEVE IT!) are quite welcome.

Ok, so I've been wanting to make a Ninja like this for a long time. While I will obviously be capable of stealth and such I didn't want it to be my main focus for a number of reasons. The main two are that PFS play rarely gives good opportunities for stealth to be rewarded, either because the scenario doesn't have a lot of opportunities or because no one I play with is ever a stealth character by any means so no one can join in on my exploits. I also have conceptual ideas as to why I want to do this. As opposed to the super stealth assassin concept of ninjas I was hoping to make my ninja be a mix of Joe Mushashi (Shinobi series mainly looking at Shinobi 3), Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) and while it is a subpar anime Naruto. The first two ninjas are powerful combatants who have a small amount of magic at their disposal and at least in the games I've played were not all that stealthy. The main thing I'm wanting to pull from Naruto other than combat prowess is the Ki element of these ninjas and the use of scrolls to perform certain powerful magics.

Plz make all suggestions PFS legal.

That said my goals for this character are:
-Effective melee combatant
-large focus on ki pool and ki abilities
-able to easily use Scrolls, I know they are harder to use than wands but using scrolls allows me to choose what spells I want to bring to a scenario as opposed to having a few wands that are expensive and thus having a more limited selection. I will have wands of spells I will use routinely such as dark vision as I don't like any of the races with dark vision for this concept.
- other than scrolls have as many useful "magical" options as possible
-Achieve all this without Multiclassing

I'm pretty clueless on what traits to take, feat and trick suggestions as well as suggestions for spells and scrolls would be most helpful. I like the idea of the major magic trick and was thinking shocking grasp would be nice, but I don't know what catnip would be useful for minor magic or if that is just gonna be a waste. If there are any ways to get more uses of these spell like abilities that would be awesome!

Thx in advance

As I mentioned I was pretty confident it would be a no. I've simply been trying to make a character that would actually benefit from his off hand weapon being an unarmed strike while TWFing. Seeing as this would create a need for having feats benefit two kinds of weapons, one of which is ridiculous to "enchant" as amulet of mighty fists is pretty costly, I've had quite a time with it and was kind of grasping at straws here.

I was aware of the whole main hand off hand thing but I felt that this could easily fall under the very vague concept of what counts as "hands" mechanically. Seeing as I don't think anyone would think much of it if I was TWF with a weapon in one hand and my fist as my off hand weapon and I occasionally substituted a punch for a kick, I thought it was worth asking.

For shame. :(

Honestly I doubt this works but it's a thought I suppose.

Like two handing a one handed weapon and kicking sounds the most mechanically possible as I am still using a one handed weapon and the kicks would be the light weapon.

Pearls of power can help you if your worried about running out of spells. I don't know anything terribly specific about them but apparently that is what they are for.

Wayangs are small with no str penalty if you want to just avoid the whole I'm to big for my mount thing. Plus the visual of a human riding a wolf is kind of silly.

Couldn't a Naga aspirant do this concept pretty well also?

So the pitch for the character came from the concept of Voidkin in the Kitsune Compendium. Basically they expanded on the text in I believe the advanced race guide that was talking about what color their fur could be, saying that white kitsune were possible and they often became oracles. Well their were what were called Voidkin Kitsune who were born with oddly colored fur, white fur showed a blessing or divine favor or something, and shadowy gray or black which showed a sort of spiritual uncleanliness in their blood. Well this fella (no name yet) has grey fur and was marked by his society as spiritually unclean. He was treated in a similar fashion as to what someone of low rank in a caste system was. Now he has set out to cleanse himself of this taint through Irori's teachings of how to attain enlightenment.

PLz make all suggestions PFS legal plz.

First off Iroran paladins can ad their Cha up to their level to armor class so I was thinking of having crazy dex and good cha to make the most of this. I might have to do this as I would only be able to use light armor.

First feat would go to weapon finesse.

When I get my holy bond ability it applies to my fists so there is no real way of getting around the need to be effective with them. I was thinking of either TWF or maybe agile maneuvers and making use of one or more combat maneuver. I've never used any combat maneuvers so I don't know which would be the most useful. Also some thoughts maybe on a style path? I'm very limited on feats here so I need some bang for my buck.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

First off I don't think this person was saying their rouge was bad. From what I'm gathering they wanted melee combatant with some skills, not a skills monkey with some combat. It's difficult for the rogue to feel like they are a capable melee fighter when for them to be effective in the slightest they have to have a properly positioned buddy. The slayer is far more capable when it comes to fighting in circumstances that aren't ideally set up for flanking as you have other things going for you other than sneak attack. Plus if the situation arises you also have some sneak attack to benefit from. For me at least it isn't just the fact that the slayer is somewhat more effective, which I think most would agree that he is, but the fact that when you go into combat you can actually feel like you are a skilled, lightly armored fighter like the guys from Lord of the Rings. When is the last time you saw Arogorn or Legolas be like crap where is my flanking partner. The slayer fills this character concept much more effectively, as while he is capable of stealthy tactics and can benefit from them, he can also just kick butt.

Alright, I figured the monk thing was a stretch plus the Jabbing style being illegal in pas is an issues this is a pas character. The ninja wasn't going to be twf but all the guides were singing the praises of twf.

Even if I do have crazy dex and weapon finesse and two light weapons, how accurate would I be?
I was thinking of trying one of two things that would use twf and average BAB.

1st: insert stereotypical TWF ninja here. Ninjas are sweet, nuff said.

2nd: Master of many styles monk who uses his first perquisites free style feat to get jabbing style and TWF with his fists. I've wanted to find a way to make a sort of untouchable high dex high wis monk a viable option for a long time and think I may have found a decent avenue for doing this here.

Only thing I'm feeling is questionable is, how accurate would either of these be? If accuracy is going to be an issue are there any low feat cost ways of fixing this as they will be rather feat starved I think.

Oh lol my bad, always type it wrong haha. :P

Sorry I can't tell what mauve is supposed to be. :(

Also I just saw that a few guides were recommending a few archetypes and wanted to check if this was ok because I mean they are ROUGE archetypes.

Hm, well if the ninja is basically a super archetype, and archetypes can be mixed if they don't replace the same class feature than wouldn't it be ok? They are highly advocating the Scout archetype which replaces abilities tat the ninja has.

I've looked at a few Ninja guides and some are suggesting an archetype. Is this possible to do? If it is mechanically possible is it PFS legal?

My main worry would be acquiring what sounds like a ton of materials. Although I do think I could do a teeny bit better than my current GMs I play with at making it the adventure feel more idk engrossing. Very little in character talk and such. I feel like all my fun pitches for "Hey this is what my character is like" are all wasted efforts.

Would Martial Flexibility still be of good use even with a 1 level dip? I'm afraid I've never played one and am not aware of how extensive it can be used with only one level.
