Help with Upgrading Animated Object

Rules Questions

This is the Stat Block I came up with for advancing a Medium Animated Object to a Gargantuan Animated Object. Any help checking my math/assumptions would be appreciated.

Animated Object CR 9

N Gargantuan construct
Init -2; Senses darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision; Perception –5

Defense
AC 19, touch 10, flat-footed 19 (+13 natural) (-4 Size)
hp 115 (10d10+60)
fort +3, Ref +1, Will –1
Defensive Abilities hardness 5; Immune construct traits

Offense
Speed 50 ft.
Melee slam (2) +19 (1d6+13)

STATISTICS
Str 36 (+13), Dex 6 (-2), Con —, Int —, Wis 1, Cha 1

Base Atk +6 (+10 HD, -4 Size); CMB +20; CMD 30

SQ construction points (5)

Additional slam Attack (1CP)
Trample (2CP)
Add. Movement (2CP), +20' Ground

Trample (1d6+19), DC 28

AAAARRGGH! I spent half an hour detailing where you went wrong, why, and what the proper numbers were, then the forum monster ate it!

Oh well, I'll just highlight the corrections for you below. Note that none of them account for adding 2 points into the animated objects ability scores for its 4th and 8th HD. I would reccomend allocating them into Strength, since that seems to be this monster's primary attribute. If you do so, many of its stats will increase by 1.

---------

Animated Object CR 9

N Gargantuan construct
Init -2; Senses darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision; Perception –5

Defense
AC 17, touch 4, flat-footed 17 (-2 Dex, +13 natural, -4 size)
hp 115 (10d10+60)
fort +3, Ref +1, Will –2
Defensive Abilities hardness 5; Immune construct traits

Offense
Speed 50 ft.
Melee 2 slams +20 (3d6+14)

STATISTICS
Str 38 (+14), Dex 6 (-2), Con —, Int —, Wis 1, Cha 1

Base Atk +10; CMB +28; CMD 36

SQ construction points (5)

Additional slam Attack (1CP)
Trample (2CP)
Add. Movement (2CP), +20' Ground

Trample (3d6+21), DC 29

EDIT: Your strength score was off by 2 points, which threw off a lot of the other stats. It looked as though you subtracted 4 from its Will save rather than 5. You forgot to account for its negative Dex in its AC. It's BAB is +10 as the size penalty factors into attacks and AC, but NOT BAB. It's slam damage increases with each size increase, ending at 3d6. This also effects its trample damage. You did not add in 2 points to its ability scores for its added HD (I didn't either for the sake of explanatory simplicity, but its something that shouldn't be missed).

---------

I hope that helps.

May the gods forgive me for saying this, but...

Thank you, RD, I really appreciate that.

Edit: I notice you bumped the Str by two, is that from the ability increases due to increased HD or something else?

Edit2: Is there an automatic increase in reach to increased size?

The medium Animated Object's strength is 14.

When you increase it to Large, you add +8.
When you increase it to Huge, you add an additional +8.
When you increase it to Gargantuan, you add yet another +8.

That's +24 in all. 14 + 24 = 38. A 38 Strength grants it a +14 modifier.

That's WITHOUT the 2 points from the extra HD.

Mynameisjake wrote:

Yes. The increase depends on whether it is a tall object or a long object.

As a gargantuan object, its space will be 20x20 feet (regardless of whether it is tall or long). It's reach becomes 20 feet (if tall) or 15 feet (if long). I imagine exceptions in regards to reach for specific objects are possible.

Just in case you missed the Edit2, is there an automatic increase n reach due to increase in size?

Also, this bugger looks a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be. I will, however, blame the TPK on you. ;)

And again, my players will hate you for it, but I appreciate the help.

Just cause I'm a shameless min/maxer who likes to find (but not necessarily exploit) the holes in the rules doesn't mean I'm a bad guy unwilling to help a fellow roleplayer.

Fair enough. Should the Animated Object get additional feats for the added HD?

Normally a creature would get more feats, skill ranks, and other level dependent variables for additional HD, but the animated object in this case does NOT gain additional feats (or skill ranks) because it is mindless.

It is worth noting, however, that its skill modifiers are modified for its size change. Its Stealth modifier is -14 (-2 Dex, -12 size, 0 ranks) whether or not you list it in the stat block. Had you given it a fly speed, its Fly skill modifier would have been -16 (-2 Dex, -6 size, -8 clumsy maneuverability, 0 ranks).

Thanks, again.

I consider our slate clean.

Hope I can return the favor sometime.

Jacob

Edit: And I don't know what browser you're using, but firefox has a nifty recovery feature for "eaten" posts. I assume the others do as well. It's saved my sanity on more than one occasion.

Does it really!? I've been using it forever and I know of no such feature. Please do tell!

It's an add-on called "Lazarus". Whenever you lose a post, hit the reply button again, then right click on the blank "space" and choose "Recover Text" (or "Recover Form", I forget which). Voila! Your last post is restored in its entirety. Personally, I set the privacy settings on the add-on to erase every hour, but that's just me.

Also, the Animated Object was a "knock-off" of Baba Yaga's hut. I didn't want to go into details as some of my players frequent the boards. One PC ended up inside the "hut" soloing against a summoner and her eidolon. Note to self: evil eidolon vs high ac paladin = no threat to player. *shrug* Live and learn.

The other four members of the party were not so lucky, however. The trample maneuver (6th lvl PCs for APL +3, btw) was sick. Round one, party's horses ground into paste, with all PCs taking a major hit. Round two, the PCs tried to scatter, but the "hut" was just too fast. Everyone below half. No one could make the save DC.

For the next couple of rounds, the "hut" proceeded to bat the PCs around like a reverse pinata. No one else could get anywhere near it (with the 20' reach), except for the archer who proceeded to get himself pimp slapped into negatives (as did the cavalier and his mount). Much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Only the halfling bard avoided a near death experience, mostly because he made a spectacular climb check and hid in the chimney. :)

The wizard finally nova'd and saved the day.

When the "hut" finally went down, the players actually stood and cheered. Thanks again for the help.

I'm glad you guys had an awesome time. I'm actually going to be doing something similar very soon with my players.

Hey now I had 14 whole HP left and only got hit with the trample though I admit I ran like Hell

@RD: Make sure the PCs have somewhere/someway to avoid multiple tramples, otherwise....

Response 1: And that would be different from all the other encounters...how?

Response 2: Considering the +20 attack and +14 bonus damage (twice), you're just lucky it was a mindless construct, otherwise, wizard puree....

Response 3: I like your wife and didn't want her to have to listen to you cry all the way home. :P

That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me.
