Ah, I should have known there was a thread like this around.
I started a similar thread a while ago, and I don't think I'll repost all the links I posted there.

Ok, I got the group portrait. Here's all the characters who got their start in 2017.
Getting everyone in frame was a pain. The statue on the left has the big sword braced on one leg while the other leg straddles it, while the troll statue is actually pinching it between its knees. And its leg goes under the plane of the ground, but eh, they can be on a slope or something.
This is at higher resolution than normal, so I noticed a major texture problem on the big suit of armor - it was way too glossy and looked like enamel (result of being designed for an older render engine). That took some time to figure out. And then the general pain of having to render the Vanara twice to crop out hair that gets covered up by clothes... arg.
But it's done!
The results are pretty good, I like how you put all your characters together. The picture looks a bit cluttered, though, which is logic due to the amount of characters involved.

Another art trade.
This time, an OC of another artist. When I start receiving their part of the trades for me I'll post them too.
I am not a big fan of anime style, but trying new things is cool.

Let's see, a few I hadn't posted to that other thread I started:
Katla, Kit's sister, who is a warpriestess of Shelyn and takes the 'art' part of 'martial arts' a bit too seriously. :D
Sar'Tket, who I believe is the only character I've played who's ended up becoming a deity.
Sevak, a nagaji druid I'm playing here on the boards who has terrible luck rolling anything but combat maneuvers. XD
Terexaltherin, who I'm also playing here on the boards, who has really made me want to play more pseudodragons.
Cithembi, another of my characters here on the messageboards.

Thank you! That's at least as much thanks to the artists as me, though. :D
From my amateur artist point of view, a good design from the side of the owner is very important, I have done some pics that I found to be extremely uninspiring, and the results are never as good as when I have a design or a description that I find interesting, even if I get to be the one who does most of the design.
I can see you like anthro characters a lot too, don't you?
Almonihah |
Yeah, I do. I'm not sure why, but they just 'click' better for me. I can make more humanoid characters if I have to, but they tend to end up with a familiar or animal companion or monstrous cohort who I spend at least as much effort on as the 'main' character.
And I do enjoy the collaborative part of commissioning art. I've no talent or skill for creating the art myself, so working through a design with an artist is about the closest I get. :D
Almonihah |
I'll have to look at your stuff when I'm not at work. I'm always glad to pay for an artist to try something new with my characters. :D
If you're in the mood, I do have a document that records a lot of my ideas for future commissions.
And looking at that doc reminds me of the size chart I had done of a number of my characters. :)

Let's see... how about some more of my art while I'm waiting for things to install? :D
So here's a bunch more Sar'Tket art:
Sar'Tket and some minotaur gods he's friends with
Sar'Tket when he was mortal, first meeting his friend Dreb the kobold at the Temple of Light
Just a fun little picture of Sar'Tket
Sar'Tket flying
Sar'Tket reading
His ref sheet, if you missed it earlier
Preaching from a temple
Giving a blessing to one of his followers
Taking off from a temple
Creating a world with his wife
Another one from his time as a mortal
When he first discovered people were worshiping him
And here's some assorted ones:
Aurexil the Wyvaran, another of my characters here on the boards
Cithembi telling the story of 'How the Leopard Learned to Walk Upright'
Iolar perched on one of his 'memory crystals'
A faux-watercolor of Zakhin'Dakh
Zakhin'Dakh out bear-hunting
Zakhin'Dakh 'racing' a terrified eagle
Terexaltherin perched in a tree
Here are some fun sketches I got as a batch:
Zakhin'Dakh
Sverixalint
Terexaltherin
Ignis

Guess who we have here!
I have enjoyed so much drawing Katla for Almonihah! And as he already knows, working on this helped me to stay awake on the worst hours of my night shift.

I am glad you like it, as I am not used to draw anthro or animals, so I downloaded a lot of real fox faces to get some references and inspiration and I had to redraw it a lot of times as I didn't like the results.
In the end I made the pic in less than 24 hours. I started working on it around noon and I was done about 5 in the morning thanks yo having to stay awake all night because of my job xD
I am not usually that quick, as I cannot spend a lot of time on a day drawing and coloring.

Indeed! Thanks again for doing it! I love her defiant look she's giving the 'camera', and I think her outfit and naginata turned out well, too. :)

I suck at making weapons...and it was about 4-5 AM when I colored the outfit and now I am unsure of my choice of the colors.
Guys, take my advice: things that look like a good idea at 4 AM might not seem so good the day after ;-D

By the way, just in case someone is interested in commisioning me.
You're lowballing your rates.

Agreed, now that I actually look at what you're charging for them.

Oo... Do you think so? As I am starting with this and I don't have a way to make my pictuees cleaner I don't think I should charge more.
Final price = the value of your experience and training + your cost of materials + your desired hourly wage.
For me, that works out to be:
- 4 years of art school plus an additional 4 years afterward doing real professional art
- Since I do mostly digital/traditional mixed media; the cost of pens and paper, plus the cost of new software every 6-8 years
- US $10-$12/hourly, which has been my average "day job" income
I basically price my works out at $10/hourly, plus an additional $20-$30 (similar to the work I do wearing one of my other hats (freelance remodeling/electrical work), where I put in bids at $15/projected hourly + materials).
Regardless of your experience, if people are paying you to do art, you are officially a professional artist, and selling your work at rock-bottom rates a). harms your bottom line and sells your skills short, and b). makes non-business-savvy clients expect those rates from everyone else in the business. I can't count the number of times I've been asked to do a full-page illustration for US $10-$50, just because that's what that client is used to from self-described "amateurs" on Facebook, Deviantart, and other social media sites. Regardless of what others tell you, if you're good enough to be making money doing art, you've officially passed "amateur" status, and should be compensated appropriately.
(I mean no offense when I say this:) From what I can tell, you seem to be a sort of "beginner-level" artist with little formal training but significant practice. Based on that, I would at least double your rates. If I were in your position, I wouldn't charge clients as much as I do on my end (certainly not as high as someone like Steve Ellis), but from what I can see, you're definitely selling yourself short.

Addendum:
If you have the money to spare, The SmArt School (run by illustrator and fine artist Rebecca Guay) is an excellent way to improve your skills. They've got a number of online classes geared toward working professionals (I spent a semester working with illustrator Scott M. Fischer, and have re-enrolled for the coming fall semester), as well as a two-part "illustration bootcamp" taught by award-winning artist Marc Scheff, which is geared more toward beginners.

Thanks for all the tips, David! I appreciate that a lot!
I haven't thought that by lowering my rates I could be causing any harm to professional artists as people could expect the same price from them and I definitely don't want to do that.
A lot of people in DA with more skill than I have sell their art at low rates, so I guessed that I shouldn't price my art too high if I wanted to be commissioned.
But I'll have to consider pricing my job higher after what you have said.
Edit: I definitely don't have the money to pay for that. If I had I would have already got myself a PC and some better drawing tools.

Understandable. I was only able to put together the funds for two sessions by being my usual penny-pinching Irish-American skinflint self.
Entertainment? Friends? Food? Who needs 'em? All I need to pay for are bills and booze.
(On a more serious note, it's worth saving up for. Technique and skill will always matter more than what materials you use.)

Yes, to a deggree. If you check some really old art from my gallery where I had a way to make my pics cleaner you will realize that they look somehow better just for the fact that they are cleaner.
I need a computer for more than just creating art so that's something that will profit me in many more ways. I have thought of getting a tablet that I can use both for navigating and digital shading. But I am still taking my options into consideration. An average scanner is also not very expensive. So I will be able to afford it on a couple of months.
I don't want to talk a lot about my financial situation and now it's getting better, but these last months I barely had money to eat and I had to cut superficial things like going out to have coffee with friends or buy a second pair of pants. So paying that amount of money it's far away from what I can afford right now.

Soooo, short update. I included the Dwarf Shaman Grungar and the new version of Elf Wizard Peter into the poster, realized that Damiana's pose doesn't work as intended in the group shot and therefore redrew her.
On the plus side, I finally got the sketches for the Cavalier Half-Elf done.
Anyway, a little progress happened, I guess. New character art of the Calistrian Cleric Damiana and the Cavalier here and the poster with the old Damiana version here.
