I have decided to test out the minimum viable economy for a new settlement. I should be able to hand out swords, chain mail and wizard staffs produced in Phoenix Pass once the server comes back on Thursday.

For details see the write up about Minimum Economy for a town.

This is primarily for members of our future settlement - but I happily welcome anyone else who wants to join us. Depending how many people we are we will need some backup crafters. I also can't be around 24 hours and game.
We also should work on bows and the needs for clerics. Guess I have something worked out by then - just don't know yet if there are any issues / bottlenecks to overcome.

What we need:
Beast Pelts, Basic Strips, Basic Hides. Possibly more if we also want to produce bows.

So if you come from elsewhere and want to join - donations of any of the above would give you preferred handling.

+1 or +2 recipes especially welcome.

Traders
This might be the first market you are able to serve. Planned production
Steel ingot, Steel wire, Soldier Chain, Steel swords, Wizard Apperentice Staff - more to be added.

In addition we might have resources gathered that are not yet needed. Varnish, hemp and hides/pelts of any kind seem to be most needed right now.

I downloaded the installer, and have run that and the patcher.

Got into the first screens, and began creating a character.

It was slow going, and eventually timed out, so I will have to pass on this for now.

Just so you know, the server's staying up as long as it can from now on. There's maintenance every morning at 0900PDT, but if yesterday's any indication, the game keeps going even during maintenance.

Good luck, Thod! I look forward to seeing how it goes.

Keep one very important thing in mind, however: All armor requires padding, and padding can't be made until level 7 Weaver. This is going to be fixed later; but for now it means no armor for a week or more.

But since swords require basic strips, those are still very important.

Goblin Squad Member

Padding is only required for Armor Tier 2+3, not Tier 1

Grand Lodge Goblin Squad Member

Correct - I was going for armour that I knew I could make with coal and iron only. Padding will eventually come. But I said 'minimal'. You have to start somewhere

Hey Thod,
would you mind letting me participate? One of the alts I created on d1 has so far gone unused (has accumulated some 5000 XP) and was intended to learn armorsmith and/or weaponsmith. I've sent him, along with some gifts :-), to Phoenix Pass, where he is now patiently awaiting permission to be part of the local economy :-).

Grand Lodge Goblin Squad Member

Hey albadeon

Happy to greet you. Unfortunatelty the local economy was affected by some evil spell - aka connection problems - combined with the need to spend time socializing with my better half.
I will try to get it moving again as soon as possible.

About armoursmith 6 - you need 6 crafting points. The easiest 2 are sawyer 1 and I can give you pine. You need 5 yew saplings for the other one.
You get 1 with armoursmith 1 making banded steel and hide. I can provide steel hopefully tonight but I don't have hides enough for myself.

I hope by pooling we will manage to get it going.

My level 3 fighter (Tilla) is back in Sodding Rock or whatever the start settlement is called, after a walkabout around the realm...dying a good few times en route.

I have a stack of most crafting materials (at level 3/4 in gathering) and when we get back online I will make my way to Phoenix Pass.

I have had a couple of steel weapons drop but no sign of any armour...I am still a peasant at heart then.

Okay, I'm happy to see you tonight (european time, I'm in Germany, currently GMT+2 due to daylight savings time).

I'm bringing an alternative to soldier's chainmail, as I've found a recipe for soldier's scale (uncommen medium armor). That requires only armorsmith 1 to make, and uses 45 steel blanks (smelter 1, 10xiron+10xcoal -> 25xsteel blanks) as well as 2 basic hide sheets (tanner 1, 10xbeast pelts -> 6xbasic hide sheets).

The only problem would be that it places further strain on the limited beast pelt supply, but otherwise it's perfect (only level 1 skills required). Should certainly be a useful alternative to have in any case.

I'll send my primary character (who's mostly a hunter/gatherer, but has already learnt tanner 1, if we still need that) to look for a more decent supply of beast pelts today.

Grand Lodge Goblin Squad Member

Beast Pelts are the one big problem. I have 2 so far from 10 hours of gathering between myself and my son. We need to have enough to pool to make at least once

Hides
Basic strips

Ideally someone is making them who also wants to craft other things later as these are 1 or 2 crafting points and level 3 needs 6.

I should have enough XP tonight to get up to smelter 3 - just need 3 more crafting points. 1 armour 1 would be 1. I can do 1 jeweller 1. Anyone bringing copper from close to Thornkeep - that would be an easy further crafting point.

20:00 UK time okay - will try to be there earlier but can't promise. It also depends on connection status - so please check here.

Enough coal and iron available and all tier 1 steel made already for a quick start.

I currently have 23 salvaged items that can be substituted for beast pelt. Also, I have a batch of basic hide sheets (recipe makes 5, not 6, my mistake) as well as a batch of basic strips (makes 25) in queue, should be ready tonight. But silly me just had to use the basic strip +3 recipe I had found, so we should actually be able to craft some +x gear tonight (at the expense of longer crafting time and 60% more hides used up, oh well... :-) ).

Also, I have already finished and brought 5xbasic hide sheet, 25xsteel blanks+3, 5xsteel ingots and 25xsteel wire as well as 50xiron and 50xcoal to help with armor- and weaponsmithing. In addition, 5xcrimson crystals +3 for apprentices' charged wands/staves.

If anyone's interested I also brought a basic strips+1 recipe that i had left over, but for now, we should probably contentrate on just getting a viable economy going in the first place...

Wow - you are fantastic. You seem to have achieved a lot of what I tried to achieve. Not sure how much time it has cost you. Seems there are places to gather enough hides after all.

Hi Guys

I made 3 characters and have been messing about with skills, etc on 1 of them (Luthor Volandis - my 'main' name) - the other 2 have sat gaining XP and not doing much with it.

I did, however, run each of them to Thornkeep gathering whatever i could on my way. Not sure why i did that, but it was something to do i guess lol.

I wanted to try to make myself some armour but couldn't quite get my head around it on my own.

Anyway, It will be wed evenening when i can be online next due to an ongoing Adventure Path game i play on tue evenings with friends. (i'm English - so my times will be UK based for me).

When I can play next i'll bring each character over so we can see what useful things they all have.

They are - Luthor Volandis (Human Male)
Vashara (Human Female)
Taleck (Dwarf Male)

Hopefully see you guys at some point soon! :)

I went East and North of Rathglen last night, and in a bit over an hour picked up 6 reg beast pelts, 1 smooth animal pelt, and 7 plain animal pelts.

Thanks - that might be the information needed. I was under the (possibly wrong) impression that the salvage is just random and always the same random.

Going to Phoenix Pass had two reasons:
a) lots of ore close by - needed for weapons/armour
b) it seemed an empty settlement - originally I even thought one not on the map as it is only a '.' in the map inside the game
c) coal close by

But it means once arrived there that I didn't go very far elsewhere. So now I know copper can be abundant and the number of hides I see you mention is also what is needed to enable targeted gathering.

This is early days - we will learn.

Just checked the area around Rathglen. All scavenging nodes in grasslands, which I think are the main source for pelts currently give the "you don't have enough skill..." error. Currently scavenger 4.

I think it's a problem of the low-level resources for trash piles in these hexes, i.e. beast pelts, animal pelts and hemp being depleted. But I'm surprised they seem to be depleted across the board. Either someone has been gathering a LOT, or something's broken.

I think these issues will be ironed out - or indeed someone did gather everything and then it works as intended. More important to me is - being in the right hex should give you the option to find the right resources.

Phoenix Pass is an attempt to see how quickly a minimal economy can be build up.

There are several steps:
Finding out what to gather where
Finding people gathering and pool together
Having people train the crafts and do the crafting

We are only three days into the game and this is the first attempt to do it. So I think it looks good so far - even if we stumble occasionally.

I was finding them in forest, mostly, in -12-00, -12-01, -13-02. I think they all came from Trash nodes

The first night I was up in the north, and could not find a single harvestable trash node in the six or eight hexes between Ozem's and the mountains (call it -06-06 to -09-09). I'm pretty sure I was the first one there, as I had downloaded the client and installed it before the world came online, and may have been one of the first half-dozen people in game (mind you, with no skills at all, as I think I ran into the wilds with my club and never stopped to train.

Goblin Squad Member

Caldeathe, I should have read your post first, because I just finished checking all the ones you said were not harvestable. At least, I can confirm, now. :-). I'm heading further toward TK now to check.

I've had a few drop occasionally in forest nodes here and there, but mostly it was iron and coal. But in -11-01 I got animal pelts, monster pelts, hemp or a combination thereof literally everytime - until the nodes there suddenly stopped working. Ever since, I haven't found a single working scavenging node again...

That's only for heavy armor, right? I can't make Footpad's Leathers (tier 1) without Coarse Padding.

Goblin Squad Member

Oh, don't know about light armor. Armorsmith only makes medium and heavy, and for those what I said is right

Grand Lodge Goblin Squad Member

Albadeon - seems I have a long delay here - not sure I'm out of connection or not. Tried to offer and accept but nothing updates

This really makes no fun if you can't interact. Even chat appears 30 seconds after I type - if at all

Edit: Seems the trade went trough but I don't see anymore in the chat when I write anything. Makes it very difficult to communicate - will go solo until connections are better
