Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!!!

One of my favorite coasters has two cracks in it. Thank the gods for superglue!!!

Scarab Sages

THE BADNESS emerged with a vengeance today. She tried to eat the couch blanket, a ketchup packet, and one of my daughter's shoes.

Scarab Sages

The day started off nice and sunshiny but now has descended into clouds and gloom. I know how you feel weather gods. Another trip around the sun often has that effect on me as well.

Scarab Sages

Happy Tuesday?!?

Scarab Sages

Meh. Today I am indifferent. I did at least have a decent drive to the office. Despite the a-hole school bus driver who deliberately changed lanes to block me from leaving my subdivision.

Scarab Sages

There were smatterings of rain as well, just enough to be annoying.

Scarab Sages

I did receive some good gifts yesterday.

Cash from my mother and two aunts.

The wife and kids got me several items:

Two Lord Dunsany books (The Gods of Pegana and The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories)
A 4K copy of Tremors
A 4K copy of Die Hard
A digital infrared thermometer
A t-shirt with a picture of Scar (from the Lion King), and it says "I'm surrounded by idiots"

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The t-shirt just might be my favorite of the bunch. And oh so fitting.

Scarab Sages

A pity it doesn't count for digital spaces.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, I did end up going home a bit early yesterday. My stomach picked a most inconvenient time to act up.

Scarab Sages

Or maybe I should consider it convenient. Pain and discomfort happen for more often than I let on, but I typically just power through and do the job. Because that's what men do.

Scarab Sages

Happy Wednesday?!?

Scarab Sages

We shall see. I did at least have a good drive to the office. And the rain that was supposed to be here the rest of the week now isn't.

Scarab Sages

However.....

Work is still a struggle to find things to do because we don't have a lot of new stuff coming in. Then yesterday we had a meeting with the big boss. It was partly about people not keeping regular hours. Not something I have to worry about.

The other part was about some folk apparently using unauthorized software to make it look like they were always working. Frankly, I didn't even think we could get something like that on our computers, since IT controls what goes on pretty strictly. Apparently, there's a work around where you can have the software loaded onto a flash drive. You ask me? It's a waste of a good flash drive.

Scarab Sages

And I've still been feeling pretty meh.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, a little while after the meeting, I went and had a sit down with the big boss. I told him I feel kind of bad because I don't have a lot of project work to do. I try to fill my time with relevant stuff, mostly reading up on new subjects, or working with the software we use on a regular basis. Even still, there are times I'm just kind of sitting here.

He did say that management is trying to refocus on bringing in more work. There was a big, clusterf%&k of a project that was pulling in their time, but that looks to be coming to a close.

Scarab Sages

So hopefully work will pick up. I've already been getting vibes of my old job, where a bunch of us got cut loose because management couldn't bring in enough work. I'd hate to see that happen here, because I do like this place.

Scarab Sages

I did at least discover that we have access to a very useful feature on a software website we have access to. It's the one I use for HDD calculations. Turns out we also have access to weld reinforcement calculations.

Scarab Sages

Happy Thursday!

Scarab Sages

It was a little crazy on the drive to the office this morning. I had no less than two different vehicles attempt to enter the lane I was in while they were next to me. Wacky!

Scarab Sages

It at least appears the rain has indeed stopped for now though. At least until later this weekend, I think. We'll see.

Scarab Sages

And we had a crazy day at work yesterday. The guy they hired as Lead Mechanical Engineer just a few weeks back up and resigned. Apparently, he had some objection to the big boss declaration that you had to be in the office for a certain amount of time each day, during certain hours.

It's a shame. I kind of liked him. He wasn't an outright a-hole, and he was really smart. Oh well.

Scarab Sages

Maybe it's me. Maybe I drive people crazy. This is the third Lead Mechanical since I've been here.

Scarab Sages

I'm sure my wife would agree.

Scarab Sages

Well, we'll see if they can find someone else for the position.

Scarab Sages

We did have a really cool lunch and learn, however. It was from a company that manufactures and installs helical piles. Pretty neat stuff. And they brought Mexican food.

Mmmmm....fajitas.

Scarab Sages

I am, of course, extraordinarily disappointed I was not selected to be the next Pope. I even had my new Papal Theme Music all picked out.

Scarab Sages

I was, however, surprised to see an American picked. I did not see that coming.

Then again, this Papal election was kind of like the Kentucky Derby for me. I was mildly interested and only slightly paying attention.

Scarab Sages

Happy Friday!

Scarab Sages

Happy I had a few beers last night and watched my new 4K copy of Tremors because I knew I didn't have to get up and drive to the office this morning.

Scarab Sages

Thank you, Work from Home Day!

Scarab Sages

We had a notice from our IT people about an attempt to do stuff to our work system. Apparently, someone called a coworker through Teams claiming to be part of our IT team, then proceeded to take control of that coworker's computer and try to run some scripts. Our system caught the attempt and stopped it, but they still wanted to warn us.

Personally, I don't understand how someone could not be so paranoid about a caller they don't know. Even on Teams. Hell, especially on Teams.

Scarab Sages

Earlier this week we had made some fresh red beans and rice here at home. I promised my coworker a quart bag full of leftover and gave it to him on Tuesday. He and his significant other finally got around to eating it on Wednesday. He texted me afterwards to let me know they thought it was delicious.

Scarab Sages

Another coworker received a quart bag full of some of the pulled pork I had smoked last Sunday. I never did get a chance to ask him if he liked it.

Scarab Sages

Still, it makes me happy to give people gifts like that. Hobbit-like, I did it on or near my birthday. I have done this before, with my kids.

Scarab Sages

I nearly forgot that I'm taking a half day of PTO today. I have a cardiologist appointment this afternoon, and even though it shouldn't take too long, I decided to use up 4 hours of PTO anyway. Since I had over 100 hours anyway.

Scarab Sages

So that means I've got about another 15 minutes of work time. Then it's "so long, suckers!"

Scarab Sages

This works well, since I wanted to stop at a few places to pick things up today. I want to maybe hit Specs for more beer. And pick up Mother's Day and Anniversary Cards for the wife.

Scarab Sages

Since our Anniversary is this coming Monday. Which also happens to be my younger brother's birthday.

Scarab Sages

Woot! I finally broke 70K!!!

It only took me just shy of 20 years.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of....less than one month until the 20th Anniversary of my first post here. Wild. Of course, everyone is thrilled I've stuck around this long. I'm such a gift to you all.

Scarab Sages

It was not much of a post. Kind of a-hole-ish, to be honest. I was younger and more foolish then. I'm still an a-hole, of course, just far more lovable these days.

Well, I do regard my first post as "much of a post". I had long felt this desire to talk about my experiences with Dungeons and Dragons, so when I finally came out of my shell in 2009, I rambled on about one story for thousands of words.

I posted many, many messages shortly thereafter; I had so much I wanted to say. Less than a year later, in 2010, I marked my 1000th post. (For some reason, that link doesn't work so well, not scrolling down to the right spot, but just use the "Find" command in your browser and scan for "1000".) Well, THAT wasn't much of a post. I specifically made that point.

Heh. And my 1000th post got the reply:

1,000 is an achievement. 10,000 they start looking at you funny. 30,000 you contract lycanthropy and move to Texas :P

I wonder what an appropriate number would be for a ZOMBIE in Texas.

Anyway, after that I slowed down somewhat. I noted my 2000th post more than two years later, in 2013. Once again, I even mentioned that it wasn't much of a post... or at least, not a positive one. But... hey, I wouldn't call it a-hole-ish, either (although some people might disagree with me about that).

After that, I lost interest, and my posting slowed WAY down. I must have posted my 3000th message here in 2023, but I didn't note it at the time. I wasn't even thinking about that.

I still have fun on these boards, though (albeit less frequently).

Scarab Sages

Happy Saturday!

Scarab Sages

'Tis a glorious Saturday so far. Sunshine and temps in the 60s. It'll get warmer, though. And there's a busy day ahead of me.

I have fun as well. Although most of the other cool kids are gone these days. And there are a lot more young punks.

Scarab Sages

I just tend to make my own fun.

Scarab Sages

It'll be a somewhat not-typical Saturday for me today. Grocery store as usual, but not the comic book store. For various reasons, I hit that store yesterday.

Scarab Sages

Well....I could explain.

I had a cardiologist appointment yesterday afternoon. While I was on my way to said appointment, the Scoutmaster for my son's troop texted to ask me a favor. He wanted to know if I could stop off at the Scout Shop and pick up two books for the Movie Making Merit Badge. That's the badge the scouts are working on this weekend on their camping trip.

Anyway, since my appointment was in Tomball, the path to the scout shop was pretty direct from there. And since the comic book store was between the cardiologist and scout shop, I decided to stop in there as well.

Scarab Sages

The kids at the comic book store were surprised I was there on a Friday. I told them they were only slightly more surprised than I was myself.
